Intro: the tendency of an object to be in its existing state is called inertia
Reason: if a stationary bus s........ This is because initially the whole body of passanger inside the bus was in the state of rest.
But when the bus suddenly the bus starts or Speed up the half of the passanger 's body comes in motion in the forward direction but the upper half still remains at the state of rest due to inertia of rest.
Hence........

When passengers sit or stand in a stationary bus they are in a state of rest.
When a bus suddenly speeds up, the lower part of their body in contact with the bus acquire the speed of bus.
At the same time upper part remain in state of rest due to inertia.
Hence they are thrown in the backward direction
