In the UK we call thrift stores "Charity shops" and the only thing i ever find in the one's near me are clothes for old ladies and books i will never read.
If there are video games it's usually old copies of FIFA from 10 years ago.

The UK charity shops are mostly the belongings of some elderly person who died recently. Not the ones who had lots of cool stuff, but the ones who had wardrobes full of brown clothes from the 1950s and shire horse figurines.

    • @pierdeer
      @pierdeer Před 6 lety +5

Same in Germany. I've been trying to get into thrifting myself recently and while I found at least some stuff, it really was in the more dense populated areas. Found two copies of Rayman that way at least, but I definitely feel you on the FIFA bit haha. I don't really want cereal freebies or these Hugo dodge-em games either. But if you want some wooden furniture or old-style clothes, I'm sure you could go haywire there :)

    • @ClyFaker

Maybe we could send you clips and you could do a "reaction video" for a few choice ones. I don't know how many people send you pics for the community submissions, but maybe there are enough so that you could pull off a special or two. That would make some interesting filler for the people that keep asking if the series is dead.

My guess is that that Panda Dryer is designed in/for Asian markets and just happens to have come here to the US (Their website, ezbyonline.com, is not especially helpful, but it seems like it might be a Chinese housewares brand that'd supply Asian markets like H-Mart here in the states).
Not sure about elsewhere in Asia, but I know firsthand that clothes dryers are comparatively super uncommon in Japan and South Korea, so I wouldn't be surprised if some folks were trying to capitalize on the idea of having a dryer tiny enough that it'd fit in a small apartment.

That Bowie Sound+Vision sealed set was, along with Dylan’s Biograph, among the earliest hits/rarities multi-CD retrospective sets. Sound+Vision was originally put out on the Rykodisc label, which was among the first independent CD reissue companies. Ryko is known for having some of the finest sound available on early audio CDs. In fact, many of their ‘80s and very early ‘90s releases are sought after nowadays, due to the superb sound quality that is not dynamically compressed or noise-reduced into oblivion, as is the case with the majority of current rock and jazz CD reissues. Getting to my point, the Bowie set won a well-deserved Grammy for its elaborate and artful packaging that employed screen prints on layered plastic sheets, which gave a unique depth effect. Original pressings, complete, in near-mint condition are very rare and can command big bucks on auction sites. A sealed copy might fetch a very tidy sum.

I love that Zenith stereo system; everything I saw made me extremely happy. B-) Re: portable TVs. My best find was a combination radio/flashlight/TV ... and it was a portable. Being from the late 1960s or early 1970s, it of course only used analog TV signals, but this was exactly the item I needed for a long-term project. Ran me $5.50. :-) Re: "Magic Touch". I saw the same thing - or something similar - that was used on old Mac computers. We're talking about some of the very first Mac computers, too ... only one of the three Macs even used color graphics; the other two were B&W only. The screen let you "touch it" by one of several tools the Touch came with. Unless you have any software at all to actually *use* the Magic Touch hardware, you best just keep your money; third-party support was completely non-existent AFAIK.

Ah, that slide projector was made by Leitz. I used to drive by the factory every week and always was fascinated by the little suspended walkway that linked their facilities on both sides of the street.
Kind of interesting, Leitz were early adopters, using computers for their optics calculation. In the early 1950s they started using one of the first commercial mainframe computers in Germany, the Zuse Z5, replacing it with an Elliott 402F some time later as far as I could find out. My mother worked there briefly in the 1960s, probably around the time that projector was made, and I think they still used punched tape as data storage then.

The "Stereo Disco Mixer" Is a Ross DM-1 produced between 1986 and 1988. It's an old-school DJ mixer, the mic in is for your microphone, the phono in or line in (which are probably RCA if this is anything like the Pioneer models) would go to your turntables. The jack plug under the channel faders would be your monitor out most likely 1/4" phono. The lack of a crossfade places this as before the era of purpose-made hip hop and techno mixers, but it's conceptually not far off from a 2- or 4-channel battlemixer used by techno and hip hop DJs in the 90s. You can mimic that effect with careful manipulation of the line fades, however, and many DJs did.
This sort of low-end kit would be used by a small event DJ for gigs ranging from weddings, to small clubs, school dances and the like.

The projector - Unless I'm mistaken, that's an old filmstrip projector.
The knives - One explanation would be that they were bought as a package from one of the shopping channels. They used to offer package deals with like two dozen knives. My father bought one once so that he could resell them to people. I still have a few of them.
Finally, love that they were playing Christmas Vacation on the TVs. :)

At 9:44 - that's a diafilm projector. Kind of like a slide projector, where it projects still images, but unlike a slide projector it uses a continuous reel of film, and you have to manually wind the film to the next frame. When I was a kid we had one of those, and it was, like the coolest thing ever, as we had all of these cartridges with wonderfully illustrated childrens' stories.

Pocketvision for 2 bucks was a score also.
