- Edinburgh might be one of the best places in the UK for street photography!
In this video, I head up to Scotland to have a nose around one of the prettiest cities in the UK.
I wanted to try my brand new Fujifilm xf56mm 1.2 on the XT4 to see if it was a viable lens for street photography, I also used the new Fujifilm xf33mm 1.4 WR lens.

Hey, Gareth! It’s Toni. I definitely had fun and learned a lot from you. I even spent the rest of the day trying to taking photos of Edinburgh from that framed perspective. It was lovely meeting you! Love all the shots here but the one with the lamppost and last shot are my personal favorites!
This is really awesome!
You have a good eye Toni
She sure does!
(Note to self - subscribe)
That shot at 4:23 is just fantastic! The wind swept hair, the framing of the trashcan, the towers... love it.
Really liked the image of Tony thru the bin, the one where she is looking at you almost incidentally. And of course the piper close-up, very dynamic and soulful!
It’s always a pleasure to see a video from you Gareth, thank you !
Great video as always Gareth. Favourite was the first B/W with reflection in the puddle. There were some great shots of the girl as well, she seemed a natural in front of the camera and takes a mean photo herself :)
Great video, Gareth.
Toni was a great model
Love the shots through the bin. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Loved all those images Gareth and another brilliant video again too, as far as I'm concerned when it comes to street photography your the best mate 👍
Sheer brilliance and inspiration. Loved each shot. I’m now excited more than ever to go downtown on Monday with my new (used) camera that arrives tomorrow. Thanks again for the schooling!
Good to see you back. I liked the first shot📷👍🏼
Mate, you made it to Edinburgh! Great to see you having so much fun and it was great to see you collaborating with Toni. Awesome vid.
Great images with Toni but I especially liked the image in the bar. Excellent video as always 👍
Love those portraits and portraits don't have to be candid!! I have the v1.0 xf56 and just love it. Maybe I'll be able to get the new one some day. But, to expensive for me now. What a cool place to shoot. I hope I can visit there some day!! Thanks for taking us along. Have a great weekend Gareth!
I love the random interaction with your new friend. This is why I love doing street photography.
I was stationed in Scotland in the early 80s. We made several trips to Edinburgh and it has always been my most sincerest wish to go back with my camera. Seeing your shots just makes me want to go even more, but life has a funny way of dampening those dreams. I particularly liked the shots with Toni and the interaction you two had. Also the street piper. New subscriber and great video!
Brilliant photos Gareth!! 👌🏻👌🏻💯 That impromptu interaction and photoshoot with that lady (Tony?) was great 👍🏻👍🏻 Hats off to her spirit and enthusiasm 👏🏻👏🏻😊
Another great vlog. I really enjoyed your interaction with the young lady. I think you may have sparked a new interest in her life 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 oh and one more thing, I’d be proud of all the photos you took. Each one has interest 👍🏻👍🏻
Had to watch this, Edinburgh is my auld home toon! I now live just outside of Sydney in the Blue Mountains so it was lovely to see some street photography and places I know well. Leaving Edinburgh will make you cry! It is an absolutely gorgeous town and that Royal Mile at night is unbeatable, especially if the haar rolls in.
Great to see you interacting with the public. Great shots come just as much from the personality of the photographer as much as the skill of the tog, you proved that brilliantly here and live unscripted. Bravo.
The last one with the piper, fabulous!
Great vid and some good ideas in there re using objects to frame. You are perfectly right about chatting to people even if you don't use them in a shot.
Several gorgeous photos!!!
That was an excellent video. Glad to see that. Edinburgh is a beautiful place.
Hi Gareth, Great video, i love Edinburgh too but have only been to the centre once many years ago. I liked the first shot the best, im a sucker for that kind of silhouette great composition. I also preferred the second through the bin of Toni, I felt that her head position was more intriguing than the first. I also really liked the "posed" shots on the monument too. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed Edinburgh, I love this city for street photos and moody ones especially in rain, thick fog/mist or snow.
They just opened christmess market and its super cool at night for photos + any light bloom filter since there is so many lights everywhere ;) You should come one day when free, I would join you with my Fuji x-t1 + 35mm f1.4 or maybe 18mm f2 depeneds haha
I'm not a street photographer but love your work and approach to making images. I learn something everytime you post a video. Thank you and take care mate 👍🏿
Some cool shots, I won’t mention the Calton thing since someone else already has 😁 Well done on climbing up onto the monument 😁👍
U pulled 👍👍
Good shots from both photographers
I love all the shots Gareth but the last one of the bagpiper is just awesome.. and I know what you mean about being upset about having to leave Edinburgh I was close to tears when I had to leave last time I was there but I had to come home all the way over here in Australia.. can’t wait to get back it’s a beautiful and special place..
Beautiful, thanks! Great shots - especially 12:35 and 12:41 🥂
Some great pics there Gareth…….I like to use static objects to frame photos.… the bin is ace !
Great video Gareth! I'm up in Edinburgh every now and then for work and always regret not having more time for a photo-walk. Need to try and get up there a day earlier/ stay a day later but hard to swing when you're on the clock! 😆
Exactly.. i was so lucky with the weather after the week i had there too!! gutted to have to leave! thanks for watching :-)
Great interaction and photos with Toni. Great place for street photography
Thanks buddy. Yeah loved it.
Nice photos again Gareth, I think you pulled there. 😉
Great video Gareth, I do that route regularly as a native would have been lovely to bump into you and say hello! I liked all the images but liked the first image with reflections best. FYI It’s Calton Hill and Royal Mile!
Haha yeah lots quick to point out that error. Thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Always like to see my home city featured and I think you got a few great shots. The last one on Edinburgh's disgrace(monument) and the look away shot with Toni through the bin and the Dugald Stewart monument on the left were my favourites. By the way it is the Royal Mile not the Golden Mile which would have more Blackpool Rock and candy floss.
Shot #10 for me. Toni Seated looking off into the distance. You were lucky to find her.
Every street photographer should have a Toni
The one at 6:01 is superb!
Gareth, firstly thanks for commenting on my street video, much appreciated. Really enjoyed this video and for sure I will try some of these interesting perspectives when I do my next shoot, I loved the first couple of shots, you did ask so my least favorite was the image of the guy in the alley all the others I thought were great. Thanks for sharing.
Hey thanks John. Cheers mate. Yeah my least favorite too.
Gareth. Just wanna say thanks. I have been taking pics for 45 years for no other reason than I like images and people watching, but over the last 5-10 years I lost that passion and could not see, (The photographers version of writers block). After watching a couple of your vids I managed to get inspired enough to spend 3 hours with the camera. Not looked at my results yet, but I enjoyed the process of taking the images.
Thanks.
That’s amazing mate. Good for you. So glad you shared that. Love that I’m of some use haha.
Really enjoyable video. Just a quick question, do you have your fuji setup for back button focus? Or do you select a point to focus eg when wanting the lady focused in the bottom right hand corner? I'm thinking I should setup my xt1 with back button focus
nice one. First one was good, but I have to admit the ones with Tony were far better especially the B & W one. What a great sport she was.
Glad you enjoyed it! she was ace!! lovely girl! thanks for the comment Mark!
Great vlog mate. Candid or Posed ? Dose it really matter, surely it’s the subject and the interest that matters.
They were all good photos. Especially liked the one of the piper close up. Not to be picky, but its Calton Hill, not Carlton. Being an Edinburgh resident just thought I would clear that up. Great video and given me some great ideas. Thanks as always.
My bad.. typical me! apologies! - I last min decided to include that image.. i wasn't so keen when i first edited it.. a week or so later and i liked it haha.. thanks for the comment Scott
The first one, the side view of the piper and any with Toni in!
Thanks mate. Last min decided to add that piper shot in haha
Great video , that 33 lens so close the mic sounds like an old machine gun 😂
I think the quality of my images would improve significantly if there was a "Toni" that appeared whenever I was out shooting... 🙂
Bella Edimburgo ci sono stato bella la Scozia . Belle foto , auguri e sempre buone foto .
Fujifilm has incorporated 8 elements with the lens focus group that move when focusing. Thus they have managed to minimise aberration fluctuation from infinity to MOD, by moving the aperture together with the lens focus group.
To move the focus group, a DC motor is used for autofocus. They have incorporated three bearing mechanisms with the DC motor for smoother autofocus performance. The bearing mechanics ensure highly accurate control of the DC motor.
It's a technical masterpiece. -Fujifilm
Actually liked all of them.
from Nigeria ... thanks for sharing your thoughts
Thanks for watching!
The shot at 4:22 is excellent!
Agreed!
I liked No.6, the photo of Toni framed by the bin the best, you've got three elements in one photo, human interest, environmental and architecture
Hey thanks mate.. yeah i liked that too! - doesnt deserve to be in the bin tho does she haha
@@GarethDanks 😄
Really nice work, get some great ideas from your videos.
I think the best one is at 12.49. Well done, mate.
That lady was lovely and so helpful. Not sure if your'e married, but I wondered if you got her details?
Haha yes mate. She was very lovely
I love Edinburgh. I want to take my family there. From the US
Great shots! Every image is a chance to learn. I tend to ask people for portraits, especially if I’m using a wider lens (since I’ll have to get close). My go to phrase is, “hello, I’m a street photographer, would I be able to take a free portrait of you?”. Been having a lot of success that way. Not everyone has a lot of time to chat.
2 (exceptional), 11, 12, 13.
Does anyone know the name bagpipe and drummer duo? I'd love to hear/see more of them.
Black and white, vs ?
Get girls…………get a camera!!😂
it's CALTON HILL! No it is not the golden mile - it's called the Royal Mile.
anything positive to say beyonds criticism?
1 and 2
Thanks Tracy
Calton not Carlton but, aye 😂
Me a d you got to get out do some street I talk to many people hahaha be a laugh
Photo two with sunstar dead hard to get
The posed portraits aren't street photography. The problem with the candid shots shot through the park benches is that the apparent subject (people standing at a distance) is uninteresting. To try to make an uninteresting scene a better photo by framing it within an unusual prop (park bench) doesn't work -- the subject is still not interesting. For street photos, I recommend first finding an interesting subject and situation and then choose the framing and composition.
Or find a compelling background and potential lighting and wait for an interesting subject. In any case, it is important to have an interesting subject/situation in street photography. I do like a couple of the posed portraits (but not the unusually framed ones as it distracts from the model instead of enhancing her).
This started off such an angry video 🤣🤣🤣
Really lol.. how so?
@@GarethDanks loads of swearing. You appeared pissed off 🤣
Haha. Sorry I’ll watch it again. I was gutted about lack of time but great otherwise 😂
@@GarethDanks thoroughly enjoyed the vlog though as always!
1:18 what a trash shot. Badum tssh! :D :D
Looks Filipina
Not a good start. You were on CALTON HILL, not Carlton Hill.
