Howlin' Wolf - When I Laid Down I Was Troubled (live)

- Howlin' Wolf (Chester Arthur Burnett) was an unique and influential American blues singer who also played the guitar and the mouth harp. He was 6 feet, 6 inches tall and was known for his howling like a wolf and during this clip you also will see moments of his wild stage performance.
This blues giant was born in White Station, Mississippi June 10, 1910 and died in Hines, Illinois January 10, 1976 of a kidney disease.
This song with the Wolf Gang ( Hubert Sumlin, Eddie Shaw, Sunnyland Slim among others) is the starting track of the 'Live & Cookin at Alice's Revisited' album 1972 - Hudba
I knew Wolf most of my life. From childhood till he left this life. Both he and Hubert were my adopted family.Wolf bought me my first harps. And put them in my hands. My own family tree was broken. Wolf had a tender heart. He knew my Gram, my mother and my aunties. Nobody in my life was as good to me as Wolf and Hubert were to me. I took music as my life. And Thanks to Wolf.I met a whole lot of people's. We would sit and talk quietly together. Wolf told me of his boyhood in White Station. How his step-daddy whipped him and abused him. I heard the emotion in his voice. I saw his teardrops fall as he shared with me. His story, from his heart directly into my heart. People talked about Wolf often. Said this and that. They didn't know the man. They simply didn't know his kindness, the goodness of that man. All the hard roads that he traveled. And his strength of character inside of him. Forged thru adversity. He was the most courageous man that I ever knew. I miss Wolf and Hubert terribly every day of my life. Anything good that I am in my life. Is due to them caring about a little disabled boy. That they took under their wings. To keep the rain off of. I give respect and love to Wolf and my adopted Uncle Hubert. As I did when we were all together. Aw. Wolf was the Greatest....!!
Dear Steve, many warm thanks for your honest and amazing comment! I really appreciate that you share it with us.It means a lot to me also ...
@Steve Tessier Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful and amazing story! What treasured memories you must have! Thanks for shedding light on the human side of the incredible musicians. Stay strong and I hope life is well!
Thank you and bless you son. I am another expression of the blues and love all the greats. Wolf was part of my life as was Hopkins, Hooker, Vinson, Waters etc. You got to get down before you get up. And you got to get up before you get down. That, to me, is the Ying/Yang of the blues. Great in ALL kinds of weather! Peace.
I got a chance to do some driving for ' the wolf' and them guys!! I knew Hubert and Wolf real good! They worked real hard to put on a good show!!!
that's good stuff man. thanks for sharing brother !
If the kids of today would listen to Howlin' Wolf instead of the noise they make these days....the world would have a far better future !
ITILII to listen to this and feel it, you’ve had to have gone through some shit. Kids in the west these days don’t have to go through enough shit to get this. They’d just ruin it if you forced them into it. Just enjoy the fact we still have access to it.
Wolf was the greatest blues performer of all time. Perhaps the greatest performer of all time.
The minute I heard the first Howlin’ Wolf Song I was hooked what a true master
31 thumbs down?? 31 fools with no clue about music! The Wolf is R&B King. You gotta love the Wolf. He's a legend!!
Rod Padgett you won’t believe it it’s 57 now😡
@@Cloroxbleach-lr6ej Well, they all suck obviously.
Rod Padgett pff obviously
L))lllllllllllll)
Dont worry bro, a lot of dislikes are accidental, these must be all accidents.....ive done it myself on other ones, usually i catch it
Power of nature! The best performer ever!
Hubert Sumlin's sound kills.
He's a Legend too! Huburt was awesome!!
@@rodpadgett415 the 2nd guitar & that bass are also putting in "that work"! 🎶🔥
Hubert didn't get enough credit he was awesome and more modern player's like Eric Clapton have a lot of respect for Hubert and his skill
Coolest guy that ever lived
He can't hold back. Pure. soul.
An absolute icon of American blues. I came to his music in the late 60s, and didn't even realize he was still alive. He's still at the top o' the heap as far as I'm concerned. I have to assume the one person to dislike this is a real square.
@潘卓Pan_Cho Wow now I've heard it all. You're out of touch dude. Lights are on but nobody is home huh? And you're obviously a whiny assed racist. This is about great music and and great band and it's leader. Not about your creepy assed political racist bullshit.
I don't know how someone can dislike howlin wolf he's a legend
Дааа, я бы добавил ... чёрный квадрат сионизма!
Damn I really wish I could see him perform live
Never seen a music artist make such a stage intro! The man sure knew his moves and his audience.
Best and bravest stage arrival given the crap that was going done at that time......confidence and humility in one package.
I cant help but cry when l watch him
One of Wolf’s best. The band working like a well oiled machine.
He sings the best of blues that lives forever👍
The WOLF baby!!! Howlin' and growlin' as a true American legend!! We don't make 'em like this anymore!!! These old bluez cats like Wolf, Muddy, Albert, and many more put so much feeling into their music and singing. I can listen to their songs anytime--God bless all of these great men; and surely God gets to listen to all of them now!!

Check out some more if u aren't familiar with them: Junior Kimbrough, RL Burnside, Elmore James, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightnin' Hopkins. Legends one & all along with Wolf, Muddy, Willie Dixon & BBK
Everybody can have their favorites of course but I've never heard the blues done better than Howlin Wolf does the blues!
Smokestack Lightning live in England 1964 is absolutely 100% 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A giant of a man in so many ways!
Howling' Wolf is the very definition of a 'force of nature'!! I LOVE his stage presence, he was huge--physically & in his massive talent. Never another like him.
Truth be told!
Талантливые люди: чувствуют основы ритма жизни, вибрируют в резонансе страсти ...! Браво....
God the band and Wolf sound so great!
WOW!!!!
This is really one his best--and the band as well.. the wonderful rhythmic movement of this seeming simple 12-bar progression is really the pinnacle of the whole Chicago blues event..
Oh so absolutely brilliant. I came across howling wolf in 1964 when smokestack lighting was released here in the U.K. . Still one of my all time favourites. What a talent 😎
He was the real deal

Hell yeah you keep him smoking
Got to met Hubert at Antones in Austin. Very nice and humble man. It was a privilege to met one of my heros.
That must have been a precious moment Joel!!! I wish I could say the same but on the other hand I once got an autograph of Willie Dixon after a gig in my home town. The famous and big bass player and song writer was also a very humble and warm hearted man.
Hubert, always felt such appreciation, for his fans. As he said to me. Without them, I might as well be sweeping a floor somewhere....!!!
When was he in Austin ?
@Deborah Pettigrew wow what an incredible experience
Would loved to have seen him perform in person..... my favorite
So him when he was about 70. He tore it up. Hip band with a killer sax player. He even got on his knees and howled. Him and Muddy were the two best I ever saw for Deep Blues. Sam Myers with Anson Funderburg had the same effect. Took over the audience with blues vibe. Big Walter also
Good harp from The mighty Wolf
best one of them all
Reading that this was recorded at Alice's Revisited makes me very nostalgic. I didn't see Wolf there. But I was at booked-to-capacity Muddy Waters performance at Alice's Revisited in 1970 or 1971. (I can still picture where it was on Wrightwood, where the street meets Lincoln.) I was in Chicago to see my sister perform in the touring company of Hair, and couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Muddy. I did see Wolf in 1972 or 1973 in Ann Arbor opening for BB King. Both were great, and neither was anything like the other!
One of the truly great OGs!
The best, no argument!!!!!
Mr wolf is a legend and he was funny has hell rest in peace and much love Mr howlin wolf forever man ooooh oh
Owoooooooooo👍
Cadillac Records the movie made me search for this amazing talent, I truly wish I could go back in time to see him preform live and to meet him, 🎶Smokestack Lightnin 🎶
Go and search the history of Chess Records.
He Was Truly, the Greatest of All...!!
Billy Flynn played most of the guitar tracks. Hubert did his own.
One of howlins best work
long time fan... first heard Chester on a black underground radio station out of Buffalo in the mid 50's , later to become WBLK with the Hound. Living in Oshawa it had to be past 10 at nite to get a strong enough signal. Between The Wolf, the Hound and a fading radio signal i've been mesmerized by the persona ever since . If there was only one entertainer I could get to see in my life it would be the Wolf

Amazing!!! I used to visit this hippie bar venue called Alice's Revisited where Blues Legend Howlin' Wolf and other Southside Blues artist would come to perform. Main!!! I was there then. Alice's location was on Wrightwood and Sheffield Ave. Down from DePaul University under the elevated el-train tracks on the north side of Chicago back in the day around 1968. This music venues historical significance has never been properly documented. It provided a showcase of Who's-Who of upcoming/emerging, Underground notables and great jazz, blues, rock and even African world beat music Artist. It's music programming was groundbreaking, diverse for the time. Eclectic, and Avent Guard for that era. Perhaps comparable only to the famed Fillmore West in San Francisco in its Hay Day. The small stage and small seating capacity at best would maybe accommodate 65 to 80 people, And that's standing room only. At the time I lived in Chicago's notorious Cabrini Green housing projects on the near north side of the city. Visiting Alice's regularly was my Escape and nightlife foray into music and diverse cultures. I was maybe 19 or 20 years old then. Believe me, this place was amazing.
Thx for this great story Freddie!!!
My brother saw Wolf at Alice's (though after his heart attack.) Someone in the audience made the mistake of pulling a harp out and blowing while Wolf was onstage. Wolf came down from the stage, mic in hand and told him "there is only one Howlin' Wolf and I'm the wolf!" The silly s.o.b. with the harp got very flustered and left the joint. My brother also remembers that Wolf, his wife and her lady friends showing up in a Caddy or at least, a deuce and a quarter. He said the car came up about a foot off the ground when they all got out. And he remembers Wolf's sax man Eddie Shaw being one of the busiest guys in Chicago. He claims he saw Shaw not only with Wolf but Luther Allison and J.B. Hutto. Apparently, they hired him because he always did a great job of opening the show.
Howlin was the greatest
This man has the features of my father and Born the same day, just nine years early...he was respected and feared at the same time, but he loved some blues and can sang them too, watching this reminds me so much of him...R.I.P. DAD I got you!!!
warm thx to share your story dear E Muhammad !
Thank you for sharing this. Without Howlin’ Wolf there is no Rolling Stones. There is no Led Zeppelin. There is no cream. All the greats from that era. Your father sounds like a wonderful man. He sounds like my dad.😊☮️
Great song, no lyrics in the web, a very pity.... Howlin, my favourite singer !!!
Great tribute to a great artist!

Nice...
The folk who disliked are Troubled - They need to go lay down. 😉
👍
The wolf kicks ass
Music started and ended with Wolf.
He was the only one that played with the likes of Robert Johnson and Charlie Patton .... enough said... 1910 to 1976... when he was 19 he was balling in juke joints when the 1929 crash was jolting the nation into a depression that only the blues could cure.
Sam Dehnad not true, lots of guys ran with, and played with Robert Johnson......
Howlin Wolf is so cool
I thought it was version of rollin and tumblin. So good
I remember a full hour concert of Howlin Wolf on youtube, shows him crawlin round the floor and lickin his harmonica. Sadly it's been taken down, anyone else remember?
Was it the one where he had on a suit & dropped his hankerchief on stage? 🤔
@@smoothoperator7023 Hed know what to do with the grammarly bunch....
He and screamin' Jay Hawkins would a pair to draw to. For stage antics etc
Grande!

77 iiiiisss just sooooo
The Wolf was really sick with kidney problems and a senior citizen by this time.
Brian31881 yea- he’d lost a lot of weight & performed sitting in a chair....🙁 however he could still summon up some energy to get that gravel voice cranked up! 🔊
Sad..it wud be amazing to see him perform.
He never stopped, until he could go no further. And was in his sick bed. Dying with a brain tumor.!!!
If you like this check the band: one dime ride
Alright Paul thx for this great tip czcams.com/video/Q5iQdM5_0l8/video.html
