  • We we're unable to access the trunk with any of the buttons or the mechanical key. The rear seats do not fold down. This is the only way to get into the trunk in this unfortunate situation. The hole is plugged water tight after the repair and the license plate covers the plug.

    To everyone claiming what this person did was unnecessary, you’re very likely incorrect. If you know anything about Mercedes, you’d know that there is no access to the trunk through the rear seat back in this model. Pulling out the rear shelf won’t grant you access either. You’d also know that if the pneumatic system fails and the tumbler is seized or otherwise inoperable, this is the least destructive and fastest way in. These pneumatic systems are not the most reliable and are very prone to aging and therefore will eventually fail even if they’re never used at all. Since these are all old and only getting older and they’re very costly to repair, plus replacement parts are being phased out, most owners don’t pay to fix them. That’s fine so long as the tumbler works but once it fails or, the key blade is lost and can’t be replaced for some reason this is the only way in. Because the tumblers back there are only meant as an emergency back up and not the primary means of getting into the trunk, they’re not designed to be used constantly and will very often fail. It’s quite common for people unfamiliar with Mercedes to try and repair pneumatic issues such as this and usually wind up making the problem much worse. The linkage that connects the tumbler to the emergency release restricts access to the main latch. Because of this people often disconnect the linkage, forget to reconnect it, realize they can’t fix the pneumatic system themselves and then close the trunk and take it to a shop. This exact scenario has played out countless times and results in what you see in this video. Other model Mercedes have different construction and trunk latch systems so you can’t compare another model to this one.

      So pulling the rear seat or the tail light won’t get you access to the saftey release handle?

    • @2down4up
      @2down4up Před rokem +5

      @@2strokeboys191 Nope. Without the ski bag option, which was extremely rare in the USA, there is no access to the trunk from inside the vehicle. Even if it did have the ski bag, you’d have to destroy the bag which is probably irreplaceable now and extremely expensive if it is still available. And once you’ve destroyed the exceedingly rare bag, you’ve now got to destroy further interior trim pieces as well as actual structural metal in the trunk lid to gain access to the latch. The seats do not fold down and even if you remove them there is no access to the trunk behind them. Just solid metal unibody and wiring conduit. Removing the rear shelf trim won’t get you anywhere either. To get access to the trunk through the rear shelf, you’ve got to remove the roof lining of the trunk, which requires access to the trunk. Then you’ve got to remove the speakers from the rear shelf which bolt in from the bottom inside the trunk.
      Just to humor all the doubters out there, let’s pretend that you did decide to cut through the unibody behind the seats or rear shelf, exactly what is it you expect to see or be able to do once you’ve made a hole? The entire trunk is lined with trim and covers blocking further access to anything. So now that you’ve cut your way through the unibody, you’ve now got to cut through the interior liners and carpeting. Let’s say you continue this fools errand and cut through the interior liners, I mean you’ve already destroyed part of the unibody so what’s some interior trim right? Great you’ve now got access to the inside of the trunk. So I ask again, what is it that you expect to be able to do from this point? This vehicle predates the requirements for an emergency release handle or button and the latch mechanism is covered by yet more trim and actual structural metal parts of the trunk lid. So now you’ve spent a ton of time and energy removing the rear seats and or shelf, you’ve cut through the unibody, you’ve cut through interior trim in the trunk, and if your main goal is to open the trunk, well you haven’t done that yet. This vehicle is a full size 4 door sedan. Because of this the trunk is very large and the area of the trunk lid where the latch sits is going to be too far away to access by reaching through the hole you’ve made regardless of where you’ve made it. I also don’t know of any cutters with enough reach to allow you to reach the area of the trunk lid where the latch resides. Remember it’s still covered by trim and metal that needs to be cut away first. So do you continue to cut away the unibody so that you can fit part of you’re body inside the trunk? I’m much taller then the average man and I know I cannot reach that area from the rear shelf let alone the seat backs so it’s extremely unlikely anyone else would be able to as well. Undeterred you press on, enlarging the hole such that you can fit the upper part of your body into the trunk so you can reach the area of the lid where the latch resides. You’ve come this far so why stop now. You cut through yet more interior trim pieces on the trunk lid and now, finally, you’ve got some access to the latch. However depending on what tools you’ve got you may need to cut away part of the metal skeleton of the trunk lid to actually open the latch. If for whatever reason you’ve now decided that the trunk lid trim and metal is a few cuts too far, you could cut open the plastic covering the striker and unbolt the striker to open the trunk. All of this can be avoided by drilling a single hole in a piece of plastic that can be easily repaired or replaced. Look I know how destructive and unnecessary this looks but I promise all the doubters out there that this is the fastest, easiest, cheapest, and least destructive way in. That panel is SMC so it will not rust, can be easily repaired, and even more easily replaced. Since it’s a minor exterior panel that is not complex they can be had from numerous aftermarket manufacturers or even junk yards. And despite what many people claim, it is not structural. Getting in through any other means whatsoever would require cutting or destroying much more expensive, rare, important, and possibly non repairable parts. This would be much harder, more time consuming, and expensive than necessary. The amount of time this took in the video is roughly accurate to the amount of time it takes in real life. Compared to any other amount of much more destructive work this is peanuts.

  • @Bigem82

    Nearly had to do this on my e46. Locked my only key in the trunk. Locksmith fished out my key through a 2 inch or so diameter hole in my back seat and I was totally amazed

      I’ve hired locksmiths that used a feeler gauge to determine the key type then cut it verified the key then programmed it all off the door itself took about an hour we’re talking ignition keys your trunk only uses like 3 of the pins

    Wondering when some folks will realize all cars don't have backseats that fold down🤔🤔some of the most common cars don't have folding backseats (Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car) All 3 of those are the same chassis, motor, and powertrain

      And most of the cars that can fold the rear seats down have the pulleys in the trunk to let them down, most gm vehicles do anyways

      Well it’s apparent that the owner lost his key because you can clearly see a mechanical keyhole like on all Mercedes, I’m guessing he lost the key and the battery died, this would have to be done on modern American cars aswell.

    Find the wiring that goes to the latch from the BCM or such and power the actuator with a 12V source. I've done this on a few Audi's.
