I did 7 years in prison and was released when i was 23. Since then my name was on the Presidents list for making all A's and having a 4.0 GPA. I have earned my AAS Degree in Computer Information Systems Technology, Certificate of Proficiency in Computer Programming, Certificate of Proficiency in Web Design ( Designed Web Site for the city ), and a Microsoft Office Certificate. I put my resume on Monster and 2 company's called in one week. I have a DBA job offer so think I will take it.

I saw a woman sentenced to 30 years for holding a pound of meth (in Texas). She obviously deserved punishment for holding a POUND OF METH! But 30 years?? She's now in her 5th year of incarceration, finished her GED, attends church every Sunday and spreads the word to anyone who will listen to stay away from dope. She's already served 5 years so tell me (with a straight face) why her serving another 20+ years does anybody any good? Also, her children are growing up without a mother...

In the outside world, one might not have time to study (work, TV, snacks, going out, etc.). But in prison, however, one has nothing BUT time! All the distractions that are so prevalent in the outside world simply aren't there.

Education about life, violence/other HS or college subjects, job training all well worth it. People that don't want their state to fund these or other programs are mis-guided. Also reward good behavior with more freedoms. Use more psychological counseling, one-on-one or group therapy, medication or anything to treat psychosis and lessen violence during their stay and if they get out.

Your absolutely right, we do worship these kinds of people. We view deviance as something cool and interesting, not as something grotesque and despicable. How are we to show our children violence and sex in the theaters and on our television screens without facing the repercussions. We definitely worship rappers and businessmen, and thats because we have lost our values and principles. We're pretty much a nation made up of greeds, predators, and stupids, with a small dose of intelligents.

These guys arguing against prisons, private or not, obviously have never been victimized, attacked or abused by anybody and have a false perception that nobody is evil, the world is a peaceful place and would rather cater to criminals than hold them accountable for their behaviors. This in turn creates entitled criminals of course, because people like them treat criminals like victims and tell them how the system and society OWES them something!

-continued- Does locking up drug offenders truly make society "safer"? Is the million plus dollars spent keeping a person behind bars for 20 years make more sense than using that same money for treatment and rehab centers? Give 'em a year or two behind bars so they are punished for the damage done by their bad choices, but lengthy sentences serve no purpose whatsoever.

I do realize that we must be able to discriminate between first time offenders and multiple offenders. I also believe our Justice system sucks, and needs to revamped. I do believe some offenders can be rehablitated, but alot more just abuse the system, claiming that they've been rehabilitated and then go out and commit more crimes. More emphasis on rehabilitation for juveniles, definitely.

At first glance, a seemingly good solution, however, with respect I submit that work camps are nothing more than legal slavery. History repeats itself. In the south, work camps were common in the fifties and sixties. Even minor offenses were met with work-camp time, and typically, there was no impetus (no motivation) for prisons to release inmates because of ONE CHIEF THING: CHEAP or NO-COST LABOR. This cannot and should NEVER be allowed to repeat itself. Never.

Any prisoner looks tough and gang kind, put them in separate facility where police officers beat them up for any wrong move. and force them to study, if they don't study , they get beaten up. this way, they won't graduate as gangstas,
provide an option for anyone serving more than 10 years to get the death penalty, that way, people who just has nothing to lose, can choose the option and leave others who want to live or change their life.
