My "Lightweight" Dual Sport Motorcycle Camping Gear Setup (Tent, Sleeping Bag, Etc...)

  • For my first time motorcycle camping on a dual sport motorcycle, I had to make some serious cuts to my typical motocamping gear list. In the past, I've always gone moto camping on a bigger adventure motorcycle, so it was a challenge to pare down my motorcycle camping gear list to an amount that would fit easily on the smaller dual sport motorcycle luggage that I'm running on my Honda CRF450L.
    I am happy to report that this light motocamping gear setup worked flawlessly on my first dual sport moto camping trip and I wanted to make this video to share my camping gear and motorcycle luggage setup with anyone else who might be considering going camping on a dual spot motorcycle.

    It is all about what you want to do and get out of the trip. That is a good list of things and you have the compact versions of the things that usually take up the most room (sleeping bag and tent). I think I would be considered an over packer. I bring many "just in case" items. Looking forward to how the trip with Tim went on the Braza.

    That is similar to my camp gear. I have a 0* quilt and I don't use anything but the pad below me. You could probably ditch that, but you also want to sleep well. I also have stuff to change a tire and at least patch a tube. That goes in a front fender bag though, so it is almost always in my DR. I also bring something to cook with, I don't like freeze dried meals.

    I just installed the steahly flywheel weight on my CRF450RL and it’s probably solved most of my stalling issues. I do have good clutch control and was getting very frustrated at this bike. Thought I was ok then started having issues in tight single track. Now that’s pretty much solved. So glad I didn’t put a rekluse on. I need to trust in my clutch control. Anyway off topic for this video but wanted to chime in on my success with this.

    Looks great! Sorry about your table. One luxury item that COULD go is the camp slippers, but I'll be packing something similar, so I get it. I'll also be packing, as a luxury item, a Snow Peak Mini Flame "lantern". It runs off isobutane canisters and makes what looks like a large candle flame. Decent campfire substitute if there's a fire ban. It doesn't cast significant heat laterally, but I wanna make a way to suspend my camp pot above it to keep some water hot enough for tea or hot chocolate from the vertical waste heat. I'm thinking 1/16" steel cable tied in a rough net and a tripod of local sticks.

    I have a similar setup for my dual sport camping, but there are a couple things that are absent in your setup. In addition to your kit, I usually bring a water bladder and a bear sack. It sounds like you camped at a campground though, so those items probably weren't necessary for your trip. Also, as its getting colder, I like to throw in a wool liner if I'm concerned that the quilt isn't going to be warm enough.

    • @DorkintheRoad

      If this bike is to be the, so called, "BDR slayer" a good portion of your gear bag will need to be for bike/personal survival gear. I just completed a 10 day UTBDR ride on my BETA 500 with three others on similar bikes. Tools, water, gas, tubes, and survival gear like a saw, air pump. patch kit all played a big part.

    • @MotoCampNerd
      @MotoCampNerd Před rokem

      We've actually been trying to get setup as a Helinox dealer. Most of their chairs are rated at 320lbs so only 20lbs more than the Mica Basin. They Mulibex is awesome too. Price is a little steep for most but it's probably well worth it.

      @@MotoCampNerd Agreed the Mulibex is stupid expensive but it will probably never break. I was just giving other options...
