Did not appreciate aligning the screw with the jaws. As always, very informative!
I like the tip of adding a larger disc to the chuck for more surface area to grab!
Yes, it makes a big difference.
Thank you, I'm still learning and your breakdown is super helpful
Thank you, Angala!
Use it all the time. When rough turning very wet/green blanks, I run the blank onto the woodworm screw loosely take the blank off and put a few drops of CA glue into the hole and rotate the blank in my hands. Usually squirt a little accelerator into the hole and let it sit a minute or two before putting the blank back on the woodworm screw following the advice Mike provides in this video
It works!
Finally understand when it is good to use the wood worm screw. Thanks
Mike, I use a large strap wrench to get my bowls loose from my worm screw, works great.
Great tutorial Mike.
Glad you liked it!
...as a newbie, there's so much to learn...thanks for bringing up another area of the hobby that wouldn't have crossed my mind...keep 'em comin'...!
Glad to help
I have not yet used my worm screw, but I found this video very helpful. I think I can pursue that now with more confidence. Thank you.
That was a great guide for beginners and a great refresher for advanced turners. Please keep pumping out your instructional videos. Thanks Mike.
Thanks, will do!
Good run-down on the humble screw-chuck Mike!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thanks, Alan.
Thank you, Mike , for continuing to create these often overlooked tips and hints.
You are welcome.
Only used wood worm screw one time. I had a real hard time getting it out. Will use some of your suggest next time, if there is a next time.
It is good technique for many projects
Thanks Mike for the instructions. I've had varying luck with the wood worm screw, and I'm sure your suggestions will help me do better! Thanks again, I always learn something from your videos!

Thanks, Harold. 👍
Mike, great video, appreciate you sharing your experience. I always learn something from your videos.
Thanks Paul.
This was super helpful! My worm screw and chuck didn’t have any of these instructions, I’m sure it will be a much more useful tool now. Great explanations.
Thank young man.
Thanks Mike, The item item I got from your video today was the use of a backer board/plate to make the base of the chuck jaws seem wider than the metal. That should increase the pressure/friction fit.
Glad I could help
Good informative. Thanks!
Hey Mike thanks for the information,
Very useful information. Thanks Mike. :)
Good tutorial Mike. Thank you for sharing.
Lots of great detail.I loved your tips of getting a stuck bowl off, I learned something new. Also liked how you let us know you are human too and can deal with problems as the come up. Your attention to every detail was impressive, great video.
Mike, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Your instructions are always clear and your way of conveying information is always engaging. Best wishes, Scott
Great video Mike, the woodworm screw is a very useful tool and often gets overlooked by new turners. I use it a lot with tail stock support for initial roughing out the blank which gives me a little peace of mind with log blanks.
So true, Bert
I've used the screw a couple of times but prefer the faceplate. After watching this video, I think I was using it wrong and since the strength comes from the larger outside contact, and I was using a little Nova G3, I'm convinced I was using the screw wrong. I now have the 130mm jaws and will try again with a larger circumference contacting. Who knows, I might like it better than all those screws.
You might. Good to have options.
Mike, another way of removing the screw from the blank is to remove the blank and screw from the chuck but instead of using a wrench to unwind the screw, position the screw shoulder in a vise. Then you can turn the blank and apply a pull upwards to get the screw out of the bowl blank
Great tip. Thanks for sharing.
Does the worm screw need to be matched to the four jaw chuck?
Yes and the chuck jaws.
