Thanks for an outstanding explanation of the rules. Sailings sure has come a long way from when my cousin sailed the 12 meter yacht Norsaga K16 in the 60's during Cowes week.

It seems that American Magic is going to be strong, and although it appears INEOS may have setbacks, I think they are on the top of the spear, in regards to technological development and thinking outside the box.
I’m hoping that INEOS continues to push the limits and keep others on the back foot.
Thank Lukas! It's going to be fascinating to see these different strategies converge as we get to Barcelona. INEOS certainly seem to be lagging no, but perhaps it's an investment in good data that will pay off much further down the line. American Magic have a smashing start to their campaign so far!
@@MozzySails on the other hand they aren't even towing without the pole much. So it's impossible to know where they're at in their data gathering. The other question of course is whether they'll be able to lean on their AC40 soon or not.

Going by all the comments I wasn’t the only one struggling to understand the different AC boats in this campaign. Thank you for helping clear the fog!

Tom and his co presenters are generating some of the best AC coverage available, surely one of the teams must soon recognise their amazing work and create a media first by inviting them for a trial sail. Come on AC teams do the right thing , i assume they watch Mozzy’s videos!!!!!!

My feeling is top speeds won't be much quicker, but VMG will be better and they will take off sooner.
Barcelona is likely to quite light, and if its wavey teams may focus on down range take off rather than top speeds
Thanks Mozzy for your excellent summary. More time and multiple R&D development pathways to explore for next Cup compared to last campaign. This combined with massive overall weight reduction and larger foil shape envelopes will produce "very fast" and "very twitchy" AC75's. Tacking duels, bear -aways, starts especially in high winds will generate bathtubs of adrenalin for sailors and spectators. Training "time on the water "in the final product will be crucial and not fully replicable by AI simulation training. Watching early footage of Alinghi "porpoising" along painfully in moderate wind "like a newbie wind foiler" clearly demonstrates time needed to develop required skills to operate maximally . Very exciting seeing pressure build up in the "AC champagne bottle" so early in the game.

Yea, the J-Class was/is such a beautiful, classy, epitome of yachting in my opinion.
I am a retired engineer, so I love and appreciate the highest level of technology and its use in yachting, motor (auto/moto) racing, but also love the beauty and form of all things yachting.
I saw went out in a rib to watch the J-Class regatta in the solent, back in 2012 or so. They had a true presence for sure!
@@MozzySails Oh man, that must have been quite the site! I am in such awe to watch these vessels in the hands of masters. A company I once worked for here in San Diego had a team building event, maybe 2004 or so, and we got to spend the afternoon on the America’s Cup USA-11 (Dennis Conner - not there that day), an experience I'll never forget. I really appreciate your channel and all the work you are doing to mine the data and deliver it in the right balance of engineering and practicality, and the same when it comes to the rules and what might be gained or lost with foil sizes for example. Two thumbs up from San Diego!

@Mozzy Sails... This is all well and good, but how do they resolve the issue of cavitating foils? How would you approach this?
Barcelona in late October could be quite light winds. The teams may focus on down range early take off rather than top speed. It might never be windy enough to see cavitation speeds
@@MozzySails .... Okay, with the focus being on lighter winds and unsticking the boats, with the combined crew weight being worth 10% of the all up boat weight, do think we will see female cyclors as a weight saving strategy this time around?
Magic video Mozzy mate. Do the teams have to declare their strategy or can they just adjust on the fly? Is there anything to stop Team NZ dropping a legacy 75 in the water and going sailing? Can they adjust an AC 40 in and out of LEQ12 as and when they want?
Adjust on the fly... although there are some logistical barrier to switching I imagine!

Sure thing!
At the moment we have:
Alinghi: Currently using a Legacy AC75 (Te Aihe bought from ETNZ) then AC40 arriving early next year which they will test some LEQ12 parts on.
American Magic: Currently using a Legacy AC75 (Patriot) then AC40 arriving early next year which they will test some LEQ12 parts on.
ETNZ: Currently sailing an AC40 with some non-class LEQ12 parts on. Their second AC40 is about to launch very soon. We don't know if they have any plans to use Te Rehutai (Cup winning AC75) as a legacy boat or not.
Luna Rossa: Currently sailing a self built LEQ12. They will get an AC40 in the new year, but probably won't use the 40 for testing any non-class LEQ12 parts as they have used most their quota on their self built LEQ12. They do have a legacy AC75, but we don't know if they have any plan to use it.
INEOS: Currently sailing (towing) a self built LEQ12. They have already taken delivery of an AC40, but we haven't seen tehm use it yet. They probably won't use the 40 for testing any non-class LEQ12 parts as they have used most their quota on their self built LEQ12. They gave their AC75 to a museum, so we don't think they will use a legacy AC75 at all.

I was still doing a lot of sailing on the last year, but just didn't have time to edit up footage. Season ended in Novemeber so probably won't film anything more until next year
I like the way you laid this out, tho it sounded a bit like an infomercial to begin with, where they taste you to watch all the way thru to finally get to the info. Do the regs allow the use of batteries to reduce crewing costs during the buildup to the event? Cyclors are costly, and add little to nothing tactically, or is the benefit of them switching sides significant?
Hey Charles, nothing stopping using batteries instead of cyclors when training. However, often the cyclors do have some roles and buttons to press for overall performance, so getting these rolls sorted will be important. Also, how you managed the power from the cyclors, how it is stored and the efficiency in those systems can all be tested. Then there are the ergonomics of a good cycling position, plus the different 'pedal' feel due to lack of inertia would all be worth practicing on board.

How do the teams police the rules?
There appears a myriad of specialized rules and exceptions. Given that the teams are spread out all over the globe, how is enforcement occurring?
In terms of equipment it's self declaration... but other teams can protest. For the actual racing the measurement committee will check everything
I was wondering the same thing. Like what is stopping them from packing a few 75s on a giant boat, going to some out of the way bay somewhere on the globe and testing away with no one the wiser?
I think you said it best: this will be a great design race. Which is, sadly, IMHO, what the Americas Cup is now, exclusively. Engineering & design has always been a major part of the AC, but so was sailing. When was the last time we saw any real need for actual sailors onboard who do actual sailing things? It bums me out that "the worlds premier sailing event" is anything but. But just like you said perfectly, it's a very, very impressive engineering event... if that's your thing.
what is your definition of "sailing" that you're getting bent out of shape?
@@weatheranddarkness I'm think I'm just old school. Downwind leg apparent wind aft of the beam. Big colorful spinnakers that have to go up & down, that get changed mid-leg, more effort to gybe. Upwind speed differences that aren't so great that catching a good wind shift can bring you back from a small error. I sailed skiffs too, like Moz appears to, so I love high-speed, and these flying boats are amazing spectacles of design & engineering, but it just feels a little less like sailing to me - less fun to watch as Lasers battling it out boat-to-boat in the Olympics, for example. I've felt this way since San Francisco, but never heard it stated so well as Moz did: it's an excellent design race.
@@scottkozy1917 And, I lament the demise of the fast square-riggers. We shall never see the likes of the massive billowing canvasses of stun'sl and skysails racing to new records on the tea and wool runs. Sigh..

The common phrase in AC is the fastest boat always wins 🏆 , so for AC in particular you seem to have missed the single most important element.
Id be abit gutted if your an Ineos supporter.. As COR they seem miles behind the eight ball. ETNZ could well be two boat testing this coming week and by all accounts they were humming yesterday on that port foil..
Ben did say last week that they hoped to be sailing this week... they've not been out
Very interesting. My thanks. and now for the questions....! Q(1) So can a team run a Legacy boat, and LEQ12, and an AC40?? Q(2) text copied from your showing of the AC Design Regs: "LEQ12: 'Any sailing yacht ( or platform towed to simulate a sailing yacht)..." - Surely INEOS towing pole/rig is only allowing for the 'simulation' of sailing yacht as it could not have sails mounted on the towing rig? Seen this way INEOS LEQ12 should be able to use its 'test' pole as it is not a 'mast', but designed to simulate sailing whilst being towed?? Again my thanks.

2) Yes, however the rules committee determining resemblance to an AC75 part takes precedent over any definitions. So if it has any likeness to a AC75 part, then it counts as an LEQ12 part. Watch this space on the tow mast saga, there's still more to come!
Just on the last point, ETNZ doesn’t build the AC40’s. They are built in china by a 100% owned Australian company, McConaghy's. ETNZ does supply some components, but I doubt they get any build advantage out of this class. As with the contentious decision to hold it in the northern hemisphere, the purpose of this class is to grow participation in high tech foiling and the Cup itself. For that I think ETNZ deserves credit. As a Kiwi, I just hope it doesn’t bite us in the ass, like losing Coutts Butterworth to the unlikely Allingy
Ameria's Cup is NO LONGER a competition. but a BRAND no longer run by sailors but businessmen.
I always enjoy your videos and your insight, the new class of AC boats are fascinating and the technology utilized is cutting edge.
There are so MANY restrictions to building and testing new components and the restrictions on ACTUAL sailing training time allowed that real "progress" in design is NOT allowed. The "boats" are boring to watch, no crew action, the courses are SHORT and resemble auto racing NOT yacht racing. NO tacking duels, NO jibing duels just fewer and fewer "sailors" hunkered down in cockpits, using computer assisted controls and foiling autopilots (??). MILLIONS spent on "boats" that will never sail for the Cup or after the Cup cycle is over.
I want to watch yacht racing NOT car racing in boats
