How to open and edit Matroska Container (MKV), MP4 and other video files in VirtualDub, despite the program does not support them natively, using ffdshow, Avisynth and a Codec Pack.
Oh God! (Is it only me?) Why everything must be so complicated? Removing the subtitles is already difficult, but opening an mp4 in Virtualdub seems moooooore difficult! One thing I really hate when I download one software, is I have to download this or that just to make sure it will function completely. Tsk, tsk! Why not make one software with all necessary filters or plugins or whatsoever included in it? After all, these people who invented it are geniuses; they should have thought that. :(
It's FREE why should they have to do all the work be grateful for a great program that is given to you freely. People are so ungrateful, go buy Sony Vegas if you want it easy but it is no better than VDUB
TheSpasticAvenger It's not about being ungrateful. My point is: why not include necessary things to a software? They say Virtualdub can edit video, but after downloading it, you'll realize it can't open an mp4 UNLESS you download another thing to the software to make it sure opening an mp4 will be possible. So since it's free, it should always lack in something? I think it would be better if they "complete" it instead. I believe they could do that.
It can be difficult but once you get it right with the proper plugins and vfw codec configuration, it a very powerful video tool. I have many professional video programs that are quite expensive but in many cases I prefer virtualdub. When you do difficult things, you become more proficient with digital video and your OS and you eventually will produce better quality projects. Don't give up on it.
Thank you very much, I have been trying to figure this out for a while today and even on forums where they have tried to tell you how nothing was as clear as this. Big help!
oww, THANK A BUNCH!!! :DD i thought i failed the procedure, but when i converted it, it WORKED!!! the only problem is when i press the play button in virtual dub, it won't play... but anyways, thanks a lot! :D
Oh my God! I thought that would be a lot of messing around for nothing, but it worked! I completely forgot why I was doing it as well. #RELIEF - thumbs up from me.
Wordked perfectly for VirtualDub!! Thank you so much, helped alot!! My LG lcd LED tv doesn't recognizes DTS (sound codec) With your help i can encode this easly. Thank you so much :)
All the steps worked for me, but when I open the .avs in VirtualDub, it's showing each frame of the video file with really weird colors. It's mostly black-and-white, but with a double image in reddish/blueish colors. It also makes VirtualDub freeze every time I try to play the video. Any ideas?
Your video is really great. It just made me sad to see the Top Gear Bucharest episode. I had my heart broken in Bucharest not so long ago. Whenever I see Romania I think of her and it hurts a lot. =(
Wow, a great tutorial. But why don't they make all that part of virtual dub, seeing as how so many files these days are mp4 or mkv? Is virtual dub, so much better than say Avi Demuxe to warrant doing all of this ?
So I need to make that text file for each video file? That sucks I was planning on cutting up at least 50 videos. Was hoping this process would be much less annoying.
i use an external hard disk to watch film on television but when watching anime it does not sub in Eng on TV but on my computer yes Please help.... File format is MKV ... can i copy zis CODEC on my external Hard disk?
It works fine for me but when I try to save a segment it comes up as multiple files and they're all very big. It happens when I try to save as mkv and avi. I did direct stream copy for both audio and video. Help anyone?
Really thanx!! I work with graphics.. in eyeon Fusion.. and there some problem with loading mkv files on my mashine. after creating *.avs file and import it - all work fine in Fusion! exact what i need now!
I did every single thing from that move - and gues what IT DOESNT WORK I spend half day trying to make VD read mkv and still NO god damn effect - it is hopeless
GREAT but the font is so tiny on my screen and thinngs are happening so fast.. I just cant follow .... I need audio and dialogue and things taken very slow
It always says "AVI import filter error" when I open the .avs file in veedub. I even tried reinstalling the whole stuff, codecs, ffdshow, avisynth etc, still not working.
Nice tutorial. I hope it works with a converted BD3D to mkv file. If it does I will definitely share with a community. I am familiar with all four applications.
didnt work for me until i went to the movie thats on my desktop, right clicked, properties, security, than i copied and pasted the "name of object" onto the wordpad thing.. hope it helps guys...
In fact all of the installations are out of date, tried to follow but ended up getting this error in Virtual Dub: Error trading source frame: Avisynth read error: Attempted to request planar frame that wasn't mod2 in width!
Dunno how everyone did it. Took step by step exactly like you showed and did not help at all either with mp4 or mkv none was accepted. So if anyone got a program that would accept mp4 and mkv please step forward..
VirtualDub is an old piece of software which comes with some of the best filters available (especially for deblocking video and converting old analog VHS tapes to Digital format). VirtualDub has long since become EOL (End of Life) and no new work has been done on the software. That's why it doesn't natively support MP4.
@jasnoor123 thanks man, it works for me as well in VirtualDubMod, and @ HouseOfHarkonnen thank you so much for the video, i searched for this solution for hours and hours...
yeah, man. I mean it worked for me too, but it's almost worthless if I need to do this every time. and by the way, this tutorial could have been made in 1 minute.
The last part with AviSynth was exactly what I needed! Thank you!
I can't believe I, a Freeman, am saying this to you but this video took 40 minutes to implement what I had worked on for 8 hours. The spice must flow.

Thank you very much, I have been trying to figure this out for a while today and even on forums where they have tried to tell you how nothing was as clear as this. Big help!

Thank you! I did a long search for this and finally got it working thanks to your video

Thank you so much :)
i put the avs file in the same folder as u suggested but nth worked....i have x64 windows and all the previous codecs already installed
Yes it does, I import mp4 footage into virtualdub all the time. You don't have the right filter or using the right filter if it doesn't work for you.
Works perfectly, thanks a lot.
Reminds me of those dreaded MS DOS / Windows 3.11 times, though, when using a computer was still science.
You beauty! Thank you so much! Followed these instructions step by step and am finally able to work on my files!
did not work... >.< I'm having a hrad time on the last step on the .avs thing..
Nice tutorial, Avisynth and the editor script worked for me. Greetings.
It worked for me thanks to you, I had some doubts since it was posted 6 years ago. I use win 7- 64bit os.
This is GREAT..Works like a charm
Excellent video. I am totally new at all of this and even I could follow along and get it working right the FIRST time!!! ¡muchas gracias
It's very good stuff and it's FREE. So be grateful.
Yes... The magic of an external recorder. They do make stand-alone recorders that take HDMI and DVI-D connections you know?
Best Tutorial i have seen! Thanks!
avi is the best container to edit in, if you need it for editing that is

Is virtual dub, so much better than say Avi Demuxe to warrant doing all of this ?
Thanks, to me it was the only way that worked, very well.
Best Tutorial i have seen! Thanks!
Good Job!
Worked just as you showed. Thanks so much.
can you tell me the name of the software/plug in on your desktop to check the connection speed? thanks
With me, it didn't work.Apears the message:"Check that any "Force YUY2" are not enabled in codec's properties. What should I do?
Do you need all of these to get MP4 to run in VirtualDub? - or will just one of them do?
OMG i open my file at last thank you very much!
+Funny Weird Amazing i have a question plz
+Chaimaa Chaimaa tell me
I worked all the steps, but there is a problem he says is a problem in audio ....can you help me
Just download the plugins and put it on the plugins folder located at the Virtualdub folder it will help
Avery LEE
SAID ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ONE TO OPEN MKV In VirtualDUB
UNLESS YOU HAVE re programmed the Product
virtualdub is ACTUALLY open source :)
iDealshare VideoGo can convert VirtualDub exported files to mp4 or convert various video files to VirtualDub more supported video format

Hi I would like to open several mkv files, but it says something about "multichannel downwarding failed" or something like that. Thank you!
Sorry bro, I know this guy irl. He sadly passed away around 3 years ago.
Thank you. Everything works fine now.
Really thanx!!
I work with graphics.. in eyeon Fusion.. and there some problem with loading mkv files on my mashine.
after creating *.avs file and import it - all work fine in Fusion! exact what i need now!
It worked, thanks mate!
hello, i have problem after opening the .avs file on virtualdub, i can't play on virtual dub. can help?
You would think they would make a new version of VD seeing as how a lot of people hardly use avi now.
did not work... I got some error something like AVI Import filter error ..
Thank you very much! It worked.
you can do it without getting troubled with Adobe Premiere or with Adobe media encoder.
yes it works :-??
but all I learnt from this vid was that i could open .avs from "file->open video"
Thanks very much, I was was dealing with this problem for 2 days and now it's done! Not obvious though. )
I did every single thing from that move - and gues what IT DOESNT WORK
I spend half day trying to make VD read mkv and still NO god damn effect - it is hopeless
GREAT but the font is so tiny on my screen and thinngs are happening so fast.. I just cant follow .... I need audio and dialogue and things taken very slow
can you save the file in different format rather than avi ?
Or you can just render it out as an avi then import it to vdub?
Thank you very much! You are the best!
It doesn't work to me...
I am familiar with all four applications.
its complicated but when you get it it works
Nice job. You "get" what it means to make a tutorial video. Bien Hecho.
tx man, worked for me with .mov file....using avisynth!
"AVI Import Filter error: (Unknown) (80040154)"
Thanks!! But it would be easier if somebody create an add-on or something like for VirtualDub that will do all this work for just one file.
Thanx a lot..
This is a finest video tutorial I ever seen. Dude, plz. tell me how do you increase your IE download speed so rapidly !! Please......
it worked! thanks a lot for the trick! :D
Aqui funcionou! Porém não gostei ter que sempre gerar o arquivo AVS.
Worked, yeah, Thank you so much!
didnt work for me until i went to the movie thats on my desktop, right clicked, properties, security, than i copied and pasted the "name of object" onto the wordpad thing.. hope it helps guys...
God damnit... I cannot get it to work for some reason and I followed all the steps carefully...
Help please...
Is there an updated version of this tutorial, when installing the k-lite codecs none of the options are the same? Thanks
In fact all of the installations are out of date, tried to follow but ended up getting this error in Virtual Dub:
Error trading source frame: Avisynth read error: Attempted to request planar frame that wasn't mod2 in width!
VirtualDub just shuts down when I try to open *.avs :/
I get script error ..
Avisynth open failure:
Script error: expected a, or )
...
Doesnt work in Virtual Dub Mod. But in the normal VD it works fine. THANK YOU!
It works. Thank you.
thanx, worked for me ;D
Dunno how everyone did it. Took step by step exactly like you showed and did not help at all either with mp4 or mkv none was accepted. So if anyone got a program that would accept mp4 and mkv please step forward..
"DirectShowSource" Could not open as video or audio not working :@
Thanks! Works great!
i hate vdub seeing as mp4 is one of the most widely used formats i dont see why it has no support, even vdub mod doesn't like wth...
