Traces | Garrick (Dead Sardine throw bait)

There are so many different ways to target a Garrick, the Gentleman of the sea. In this video Ray Thompson the Trace Guru shows us how to make a live bait trace and how to rig it up. This is the "Sardine Dead Bait" trace designed to target Garrick. This is not a sliding trace but rather a casting dead bait.

Great video and instruction. Any reason why you don't run a second hook on the deadbait for better hookup? Also, is the Maxima Ultra Green line?

In the trace do you use a sinker
If not how would you fish it the way you'll did it in the video

No sinker for this trace, you're using the weight of the sardine to cast. So cast out the sard, let is sink and wait or slow retrieve.

Hi Vijay we recommend using mono to increase your pull rate. Rather lose the odd fish and get more pulls. If the shad are wild then change over to steel. But rather start your session on mono. Hope that helps. Tight lines.

Yes absolutely! A GT will be all over that throw bait.

But just out of curiosity, how would we rig up a dead sard for garrick if we use circle hooks? Is it recommended?

We don't recommend using a circle hook as it will tear through. Hope this helps.

Good day, I’m headed to Scottburgh around mid-June 2022 and would love to target a Garrick. If going the throw bait route 1) any tips for where to throw a bait? Off the beach? Off the point? And 2) would we use a sinker?

The rocky point works really well. If you don't have any luck there you can look for a nice sand bank with a trough and put your drift bait or live bait there and also work a stick bait through the same area. The dead sardine drift bait doesn't need a sinker, but if you want to slide a live bait them you will need a sinker. You won't be able to buy live bait, but you can try spinning spoons for shad in the surf zone.
