  • British contralto Constance Shacklock (1913-1999) had a long and distinguished career at Covent Garden, where she sang heavy duty operas, including those of Wagner and Strauss. She took the opportunity, late in her career, to do a six-year run in the original Sound of Music. This recording of "Climb Every Mountain" is from the 1961 original cast recording.

    My mother saw Constance Shacklock in the London run of this show in 1963. She told me that the night she went, Mother Abbess struggled to hit the closing high notes of this song .... she calmly and bravely asked the orchestra to begin the song again, then utterly nailed it! My mum said she got a rousing ovation much like when an acrobat takes a tumble, then gets back up and performs flawlessly.
    Considering that she was performing 8 shows a week and over 2,000 performances at her advanced age, my mother was always impressed by her courage and determination that night.

    This is utterly magnificent and extremely moving. A wonderful singer in the twilight of her career showing how it should be done. Beautiful. Sheer class.

    Constance Shacklock had a wonderful career and her voice was superb. Here is a singer at the end of her career who has a vocal freshness that would be the envy of many. She also became Life President of the Association of Teachers of Singing in the UK and made a major contribution to singing teaching.

      Hi Edmund, she sings on the Malcolm Sargent ' Classics for Pleasure' version of The Beggars Opera. There is also a recording of Messiah which is maybe on you tube now I think.

      Thank you very much, Ms. Shacklock, for writing in. No, there is no doubt about it, your great aunt was a terrific singer, one of the very best contraltos of her day. You are fortunate to have a great singer in the family! Thanks again for writing, Edmund StAustell

    A contralto version of Supervia! And you know how I love our Conchita. A very fine rendition, beautiful, ringing high notes as well as an imressive low range. Yes, I can imagine she was a superb Wagnerian. And she looked like Grace Kelly. Can't be bad!

    Unexpected delight! Thanks so much. Wondering if one of her iconic ¨Rule Brittania!¨ performances was recorded, particularly ¨live?¨ Here the same fervor is evident. It was a thrilling sound.

    Rodgers&Hammerstein created an unusally taxing piece to be sung most every evening as the tradition is with playing musicals. This moving and wonderful song has often been a disappointment at the theatres in different productions when I have attended Sound of Music. Even Peggy Wood in the eternal movie is perhaps not the one to deliver full justice to this exceptional tune. Constance Shacklock is doing her best in a majestic Clara Butt-style but with a trying vibrato that is a bit disturbing. There is an urge for an elderly woman with all the vocal resources kept and preserved, and that is not so very common. Still a great rendition.

      Thanks, my friend. Good comment! She was quite a contralto in her day!

    • @Tenortalker
      @Tenortalker Před 8 lety +4

      Hi Bengt I don't find her vibrato disturbing here as she sings very much in tune. It doesn't obscure her pitch. Also the great Clara had very definite gear changes in her voice, whereas Constance's voice was very even from top to bottom.There are few singers who arrive at retirement age after a long career in the heaviest operatic roles that can sing like this after all. This was a voice that was worthy of singing with Flagstad and received equal praise in Tristan at Covent Garden. We all hear and respond to vibrato differently which is why some can enjoy Supervia and Magda Olivero, but the vibrato is too much for others' taste so I do understand .
      Incidentally Constance Shacklock auditioned with ' Softly awakes my heart' from Samson for Rogers and Hammerstein- Delilah an interesting choice for a Mother Superior. She had style!
