  • Quick little video for you this week comparing proof copies from Amazon KDP and Ingram Spark. Now that I have proof copies from both companies, I'll be going over the differences between the two and my opinion on each.

      The crazy part of the color difference is that all computers have different color tones on the screen. The truest best way to get exact colors is to be in a grey dark room when creating. But, I’m guessing the color difference is something that isn’t a significant worry in this case. When I was doing photography, naturally - it was far more crucial. Just a random thing to share that really prob doesn’t matter lol. 😅

    Thankyou - very helpful. Given that my epic sf novel is at least 600 pages, I like the sound of IngramSpark.

      KDP is horrible for large novels due to the way that they calculate royalties. You have to charge an arm and a leg to your customers or you won't make a dime.

      Thank you! I'm glad you found the video helpful. I've since ordered a lot more copies and plan to do an updated video on this. I really like the quality of the Ingram copies more, but they are also more expensive than Amazon, which is tough for struggling Indie authors.

      @@RachelTerryAuthor I've been watching a few of your videos the past few days and found them all to be quite helpful. Definitely will recommend your videos to any new Indie authors. Can I ask you a quick question, would you recommend having the same book on Ingram Spark and KDP? Is it okay to get the free ISBN for both or should I just go ahead and pay for one?

    • @RachelTerryAuthor
      @RachelTerryAuthor  Před měsícem

      @@RANTSRUS I have the same book on both and I went ahead and bought the ISBNs. They are expensive, though. I uploaded to Amazon first and submitted for preorder with the ebook, but did not publish. And then I uploaded to Ingram, which will give you a preorder for paperbacks.

      @@RachelTerryAuthor I'll buy the ISBN's then. I cannot thank you enough for all the information you've given me. This is the first time I'm doing self-publishing and I have been so lost on which websites to use, book sizes and ISBNs and I haven't even begun yet to worry about marketing, which is going to be a whole new problem in itself. Thank you so much for your help in answering my questions and all you do on your channel. Each video of yours has been informative. Wish I would of found your channel weeks ago.

    Amazon uses RBG colour codes for covers and Ingram uses CMYK colours which are different codes. As a result, the colours will be slightly different. Its more a printer thing, Ingram uses different printers which uses a differently coded system :)

    • @RachelTerryAuthor
      @RachelTerryAuthor  Před rokem

      Makes sense. Since I've ordered more copies, I noticed quite an obvious variation on color in the Amazon copies. Some of them look like my original proof copy and some of them look like the Ingram copy lol

    Hi Rachel. Thanks for all the tips on Amazon and IS... I'm in the process of self-publishing my first novel, fantasy fiction. Got my line edits back from an editor. Getting close to submitting my novel to Amazon. Getting cover design finished, etc. : Has Amazon changed its policy on: NO additional fees for uploading books and no fees for revisions? (I'm aware this video is over 5 months old.)

    • @RachelTerryAuthor
      @RachelTerryAuthor  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Congrats on the novel! I hope everything goes well with the release! :)
      So far as I know, or at least as long as I have used it, Amazon never charged for uploading and revising books. IngramSpark did, but they recently changed their policy to where it's free to upload and revisions are also free so long as they are made within 60 days of uploading to IS. After that, you do have to pay to revise files.

    Great insights thanks!
    Quick question, if you buy your own ISBN (not KDP free one), can you use the same ISBN for both the KDP and IS print or do you need to get two separate ISBN’s?
    Obviously they are the same design and content, so should be the same ISBN right? but then again they are different prints by different companies, so I’m not sure.

    • @RachelTerryAuthor
      @RachelTerryAuthor  Před 10 měsíci

      I use the same ISBN for both.
      I upload the paperback to Amazon first and save it as a draft. Then I upload the paperback to Ingram and enable distribution to get a paperback preorder. Then, 2-3 days before release day, I publish the paperback to go live on Amazon. So it goes live a day or two before the Ingram paperback. Not sure all these steps are necessary, but I've had no problems.
      Also worth noting, since I made this video, I've ordered more copies and while I still like how thick the Amazon copies are, the Ingram copies are definitely better quality.

    I had planned to print/sell with both but when I received my Amazon copy the inside pages came loose as I read. I did a bit of searching for this issue and found many others also complained about loose pages. I have never in my life bought a book and the pages came loose as I read them. I ditched Amazon. I hope Ingram is not the same. For past books I used a traditional offset printer.

    • @RachelTerryAuthor

      @Brayden_Aysta Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@RachelTerryAuthor that sounds good to me. If you don’t mind me asking, how many drafts did you have to write before publishing? I just finished my fifth and am hoping to start on the sixth soon.

    • @RachelTerryAuthor
      @RachelTerryAuthor  Před 4 měsíci

      @@Brayden_Aysta I don't know how many drafts, since I didn't count, but I wrote and rewrote Lightbringer over the course of 13 years before I published it. I didn't rewrite it every year, since I had other books I worked on during that time, too, but I would guess anywhere from 5-7 drafts? Lightbringer definitely had more rewrites than any other book.

    Since the Amazon copy is thicker, does it weigh more? Honestly, if you hadn't pointed out the number on the spine being sideways, I probably wouldn't have noticed it. But isn't that the way it goes? The person who made it is so much more aware of any flaws than anybody else.

    • @RachelTerryAuthor
      @RachelTerryAuthor  Před rokem

      It might weigh slightly more. I just tested them, but I couldn't really tell a noticeable difference.

    • @pequadcob2009
      @pequadcob2009 Před rokem +1

      I doubt there is a big difference. Ingram is just more densely bound, i.e. tighter. So, I doubt that the looser binding of the KDP will make it heavier.

      Yeah, the more proof copies I ordered, I think the IngramSpark ones are better. Though, I haven't ordered as many Ingram copies as I have Amazon, so it's possible that Ingram's quality control is just as wacky as Amazon's.
