Dean was not originally scripted to cry but he has that final tear down his face right before the deed is done that was not in the script.... the acting in the scene alone is phenomenal....... Sam's very sad heartbreaking reaction creates Dean's reaction and they left it the way it was because it's perfect. Albeit one of the saddest TV scenes I've ever seen

God it hurts... so brilliantly acted, and such an amazingly moving scene for the writers to include... but it hurts. It's perfect and heartbreaking how Dean keeps his gaze locked on Sam while Madison is talking. It breaks my heart the way Madison says "I'm asking you to save me" and knowing what that must sound like to Sam's ears. And Sam insisting to do it himself, even though it hurts, so he can honor her last wish. And especially, the part that kills me most, is the way he looks back at Dean one more time before he does it, looking to his brother for help, his tears and his face say "Please make this go away. Please tell me this isn't our life."

One of the most heartfelt episodes of Supernatural- Sam conveyed so much emotion and Dean and his empathy for his brother- with that one tear you could see he felt all of Sammy's pain.
Poor Sam, it wasn't too long ago that he had loss Jess and this was the first person after her death that he really connected with- only to lose her too.

Yeah, technically it was the second person, because of Sarah. But I think with Madison, he felt like she understood him. Because obviously his powers (which at the time were only really visions. He'd used telekinesis once at that point in time) and then Madison was a werewolf, so he probably felt like they understood each other. It is so sad that Sam can't have a relationship that ends well... Because most of them die. Amelia is one lucky person! Hahahaha

I can relate to what dean's feeling. Of all the things we older siblings can protect our younger siblings from, a broken heart isn't one of them. I protected my sister from bullies, even a pack of wolves once. But I was powerless against the pain of losing our father. All I could do was be a shoulder to cry on, try my best to hide the pain I was feeling. Believe me it's not easy to hold back the tears, when you lose a parent. Especially if you're as close to them, as I was with my dad.

There's so much depth to this scene which is why it will probably always go down as my favorite end to a SPN episode (and there's been many endings that I love). Sam making the decision to kill Madison because she's a danger to society even though she's really not evil and Dean realizing that he may be forced to someday kill Sam for the same reason. Also, Dean realizing that Sam is actually capable of killing Madison, while he himself knows he could never kill Sam but would kill himself first.

Let's clarify this: Sam didn't fell in love. If anything, he was infatuated. Almost everyone is talking about losing someone you love and protecting your brothers, but what this scene is truly about, is the fact that you can't save all the people that cross your path. Sometimes you gotta do what seems to be horrible things to keep them away from suffering. And that's why this is so tuching.
This episode is the first before/after in the series. When the heores doesn't look too much like heroes anymore, but humans. Just like us.

The girl was important. This was the first time sam opened up his heart to a female ever since his former girlfriend burned alive on the ceiling. To him this was breaking that inner barrier down. Opening himself up. Being vulnerable. Learning to care for someone that way again. Seeing hope in all the darkness he lives in. He saw light. And now he had to strip his own light away. Kill his own inner peace, happiness, and hope.

    • @amberxv4777
      @amberxv4777 Před 5 lety +6

Sam saw himself in her. The fact that he could'nt save her no matter how he tried reflected that probably no one can save him either from his dark side. Yes a few days are too short to fall in love, but she really was growing on him and he just wanted to believe that you don't have to be bound by your fate, instead you can choose your own way. So having to kill her was devastating for him.

The way Sam turns back to look at Dean like he's asking for help, "No I can't do this, do something Dean, help me" . He's always looked upto his big brother and expects him to find a way a to help him. And Dean's single tear and flinch over the gunshot was the one really emotional for me because he doesn't even know Madison that much and he doesn't care about her but seeing his brother broken and crying is making him cry. How pure is that. Crying over your brother hurt physically is another thing but crying over him being emotionally hurt is whole new level of love. The same way Sam cried when Dean opened up about his time in hell. The epic love story of this series is Sam and Dean's ❤️. I've never seen any other movie or series which had a character who loved another with such fierce and dedicated love and affection. These two break my heart 😭😭😭

Only humans can go to heaven or hell. So unless the theroy of Purgatory in SPN is the monsters that go there are there to redeem themselves to be becoming pure human souls again then I doubt it.

    • @BigMac8000
      @BigMac8000 Před 3 lety +1

@@Ghost-fu7cb That logic doesn't hold up. There's plenty of evidence to suggest who really ends up in Purgatory, and more importantly, "Why".
For instance, Dean once became a vampire, then taking a certain risky cocktail managed to restore his own humanity. Part of that drug was that he'd never drank the blood of a human as a vampire. There's a line you cross when you hurt people. Purgatory is for those who chose to be beasts, who accepted the lifestyle. Garth, for instance, wouldn't end up in Purgatory because he isn't choosing to be a beast - it's just part of who he is now.
Examining the creation myth in SPN of purgatory, the area was created specifically to keep the Leviathans, ravenous world-eating creatures, from, "gobbling up the whole petri dish". This is why monsters end up there. Purgatory is described as,
"It's like the backside of your worst nightmares. It's all blood and bone and darkness. Filled with the bodies and souls of all things hungry, sharp, and nasty."
Benny's the best example to use when noting who belongs, and does not belong, in Purgatory.
Benny escapes, but is rapidly devolving back into Vampirism. He says Purgatory is "Pure" in its animal instincts. Benny chooses to go back because that's where he belongs - he was playing at being human, but really, he's happy being a vampire. This also makes sense given that he managed to survive so long in Purgatory - nobody knows what happens to those who die in Purgatory, its mentioned in the show.
Eve, the queen of monsters, was constantly trying to refine her monstrous creations. Her entire ethos was to create a perfect monster that would condemn humanity to Purgatory - increasing her power. All Vampires, Werewolves, Jefferson Starships and Alpha's are descendent from Eve. She, like the Leviathan, constitute the greater history of Purgatory. If you follow Eve ideologically, and feast like a beast, you end up in Purgatory. Many of Eve's "creations" die long before this can happen - she attempts to create a disease when we see her, one that kills quickly and rips through a fraternity, but she abandons this idea. It doesn't have enough time to corrupt and give people opportunity to become "Beasts".
The best example? The hard one?
      Bobby Singer.
Bobby takes on a ghost form, and ends up in Hell. This is likely less condemnation and more, "he opened an opportunity for Demon's to capture him" which we've seen before. Either he ended up there due to the fact he chose to become a Ghost, or because the Demons did something similar to possessing Tessa is unknown. Regardless of how it happened, he ends up there... but he doesn't stay there. He ends up in Heaven all the same - the path in which this happens is chaotic, but ultimately it's simply because he doesn't belong there. Same with John Winchester - only 3 "righteous" souls have been in Hell in canon during the show, and prior to it no righteous souls were in hell. This is evident by the fact that they required John and Dean Winchester to make Demon deals in hell to break the seals - it's stated in the show there are no righteous souls in hell save for John and Dean.
John escapes, Dean is dragged out by an Angel and Bobby is taken out by Sam. All of these characters end up in Heaven, where they belong, despite having taken on Ghost forms. John is confirmed at the end of the series. Benny too, ends up back in Purgatory.
This all comes back to Reapers.
Reapers, as established by Tessa later in the series, are simply angels. They work for Death and seem empty, vacant, except for Tessa, and by and large have similar powers. They decide where you go when you die - though you don't remember this unless they want you too.
They can be subverted by especially powerful demons, Azazel and likely Knights of Hell, Lillith most likely could do this as well - but in that example they only returned Dean's soul to life. This is likely how they manifest demon deals. It's canon that a human soul is what powers these deals, part of a bit of spellcraft that allows them to create incredible feats. Human souls are incredibly powerful in-canon. 30-40 million souls ascends Castiel, albeit flawed, to "Godhood". 50,000 and Castiel can kick the tar out of the Arch-Angel Raphael. A single soul lets Castiel travel through time (Bobby's). More noteworthy is that God couldn't create the world without sewing his own Death into a book, meaning this process is sacrosanct. Everything in the series suggests that this is the real fabric of the SPN universe - the wheel of death. It's integral. It's even stronger than God's powers - you end up where you are meant to end up.
This is why Reapers, and Death, exist. To sustain the natural order. It's not ever simplified or subverted - you always simmer out to where you belong.
In this character's case, she clearly belongs somewhere other than Purgatory, a place you go only when you commit to pure bestiality. She denied that call, so she's going somewhere else. She doesn't serve Eve. She doesn't feast or let herself do so. It isn't a contract, it's decided by Reapers, who take extra-special care in deciding where you go. Bobby Singer is told outright that he's got a ticket to Heaven during his judgment, a rule that reaper broke to incentivize him. Bobby denied this road and took his own, but that angel didn't think about Bobby's crimes against Heaven's will, it didn't care about his dabbling in witchcraft or sorcery or his deals with Hell.
Easy math. Good guy, going to Heaven. Bobby was a good guy by a landslide. The Reaper's decide where you go and they either deposit you there, or an appropriate agent does (likely a Demon if you're going downstairs). There's no agents for Purgatory. Reapers decide that. Meanwhile the Reapers are shown to be kind, understanding and ultimately take their jobs very seriously and without malice.
This is an easy decision for them, they'd send her to Heaven.

Sobbing over everything. I know Jensen crying was unscripted and unplanned on his part but you can interpret so much from this. One, Dean has to see Sam lose another bit of innocent happiness. In All Hell Breaks Loose, Pt 2, when Dean is talking to Sam's dead body, he talks about when they were kids, how he always tried to deflect Sam's questions about the dark things in their lives, saying, "I just wanted you to be a kid, just for a little while longer". Dean has always tried to preserve the happiness and goodness in Sam's life. Now, he has to watch his little brother murder something that has made him happy, he has to watch the "hunter's life" once again claim one of the few good things that Sam has to hold onto. Two, Dean is crying because he feels like he's seeing his future unfold before his eyes. Just think, only a few episodes before, Dean told Sam that their dad told Dean he might have to kill Sam. Throughout this whole season, Dean's been watching Sam grapple with the darkness inside him, with his Dad's words hanging over his head. In this scene, he's watching Sam kill someone he deeply cares about because they have an uncontrollable darkness inside them. There is no way he isn't thinking about the fact that he might have to do the same to Sam in the future. FUCK.

Hesitantly, Sam takes the gun from his brother's shaking grasp. Tears streaming down his face, he turns to the door. Looking back at Dean one more time, he walks into the room where a girl that he, just maybe, had fallen in love with for once, stands crying.
"I'm sorry..." He whispers to her. "I'm so, so sorry." His voice rattles as he stutters the final words out.
"Don't be," She sobs in reply. "You do what you have to do. It's for the best."
Sam looks at her with sad eyes, praying to everything -- God, angels, demons even, that he did not have to do this. "I know," He says almost silently.
Slowly, he raises the gun with a wobbling grasp, so that it is even with the girls forehead. He wanted it to be as quick as humanly possible.
Suddenly, a shot resonates through the crisp air.
Outside the room, his brother flinches at the sudden sound, a single tear inching down his cheek. He hated to see his brother in pain, and if he could, he would take all of it away in a heartbeat.

Unless you're old sibling who's had to watch your younger sibling go through the pain of heartbreak. Then you'll never understand why Dean sheds that single tear. He doesn't want to cry in front of Sam, because he knows he needs to be strong for him, and at the same time he can't help but feel helpless. Because unlike werewolves or asshole ex boyfriends in my sister's case, heartbreak isn't something that you can shoot or punch. That single tear is your struggle to remain strong for them, while your younger sibling goes through something truly painful, and knowing that there's not a damn thing you can do about it.
