    Amazing aspect of 90's ESPN NASCAR Coverage was Dr. Jerry Punch being an actual Doctor, responded directly to many pit lane and on track incidents and was able to directly report his work as a broadcaster. AMAZING

    These cars look crude but very fast. Scary fast as a matter of fact and I see an absence of gravel traps so if they get off course those tire barriers are unforgiving!

    • @cfoster81
      @cfoster81 Před 7 lety +1

      And there was no "Inner Loop" chicane before Turn 5. It was added in 1992 after Tommy Kendall's crash in a IMSA GTP race and the fatal accident of J.D. McDuffie, both in 1991. I could only imagine if the old Turn 5 was still in place, while yes, it was a good passing opportunity, yet if your brakes failed or cut a tire, you would hit the tire wall hard.

    • @badmonkey2222
      @badmonkey2222 Před 5 lety +3

      And compared to the 550hp they have now they had 870hp in 1990 and the cars were a handful compared to now they basically drive themselves these were men!!

    Mechanical grip was very foreign in the NASCAR garage back then; look at how much higher off the ground the cars are! They may as well have been racing trucks!
    Seeing these good ol' boys slide around the corners reminds me of how I race in the video games. The highlight reel always shows my car more sideways than I remembered when I was on track...

      Lol mechanical grip was all those NASCAR guys knew back then so idk what you’re talking about. Aero was in its infancy in 1990. The cars had a minimum height requirement and weighed app. 3700lbs too so they’re gone drive like pigs haha.

    1990 was a bad year for pit road accidents and fatalities to crew members. I remember there didn't used to be a pit road speed limit and there was a big change to pit road road rules in the 1991 Daytona 500 which was a big debacle its self with color coded stickers on the windshields indicating when to pit. Turn 5 at the Glen used to be the scene of horrible accidents until they added a chicane there to scrub off speed

    My words, "When Jimmie Johnson drives like this to a win he'll earn my respect as one of the greats of NASCAR." JG beat JJ at Atlanta a couple of season ago when Jeff got his 85th win. I said when he "wins" in a race like this I'll give him some comparison to the legends. Care to try again?
