How awesome to see just what is down there. Folks have no clue of the dangers hidden. Thanks for sharing with us.
Great video of our local lake. The truck is a 1982-1993 Chevrolet S10/GMC S15 pickup
My father passed away in canyon lake, but his body was recovered. Can’t imagine how many more people are in there.
I am really sorry to hear that : ( I have no idea, my hope is that there aren’t too many
A lot I love here and yea it’s a lot somone had just passed a year or so ago on a boat and had I think either drowned or sum but he was a friend of the dude I was gonna work fir
We've been here 43 years and EVERY YEAR so many drown. People who aren't familiar have no idea how dangerous this lake can be:(
@@scottbauerbelowlots of dead in that lake, the currents are very strong, I got caught and it carried me out into lake and luckily a nearby boat saved me just as my strength was about to give out
Wow, nice video. I remember diving at Comal Park in back in 1972 with a group from San Antonio called the Alamo Baracudas. I was certified at 16 years old. Back then we had steel tanks (72cu ft) with a J valve that would cut off at 300psi, then you could pull a rod open the valve and you would have 300 psi to ascend gracefully, a single regulator, no Buoyancy Compensator. I was certified by YMCA. Also made many dives at North Park and at that time there was a 1930's Ford Coupe at about 45'. Been diving ever since. It is the most relaxing thing you can do. Hope all divers will help clean up all the trash as best they can.
So amazing ❤ wow thank you for sharing ❤🔥 I live in Selma and i love going to canyon lake. ❤
Cool video Scott! Good work you’re doing too! It’s a shame all the garbage 😢.
Keep em comin!
I’m loving these videos on your local sites. It motivates me to make a series of Missouri dive sites. They wouldn’t be artsy and well shot like yours but I’d like to showcase what the show-me state has to offer. From mines, caves, wrecks, and lakes we have quite a few wonders around us.
Thank you! That area has a lot to showcase, I would love to see that…I’ve always wanted to dive the mine that I keep hearing about up there
@@scottbauerbelow bonne terre is nice but expensive. Check out mine la motte
Some cool mine diving that’d been explored 5000’+
I live 2 miles from mine la motte and 30 miles from bonne terre. Plus about 1.5 from most caves in Missouri. I’m definitely blessed in this area.
Love this video! Not sure if your local or have seen canyon lake recently but I think a video about how low it is with footage would be awesome might bring some awareness to people and developers over pumping and draining the lake. It’s a sad sight to see. No rain doesn’t help obviously but the over drawing is awful! Wonderful video though!
Thank you! It is sad to see the lake so low but keep in mind it was man made and put there so we can pump water from the lake as opposed to over pumping the aquifer underground which is a huge concern to wildlife and our natural springs
There is a video just posted on CZcams about what it looks like now. After I watched it, this video came up in my feeds. We need rain desperately and the Core of Engineers and the government need to clean this lake out now that it's so low. The Federal government just did that with local governments, me, lol at Lake Amistad! God bless them too. They removed over a million tons of trash and debris. It was no easy task but because it's so low they did it. Best time to do it. Now we are praying for rain to fill this beautiful clean lake up!!!
Been diving canyon for years, last dive there was a couple Octobers ago dropped in on north park from a zodiac was great vis. And great dive. Too bad Lake levels have dropped so much we need rain!
If it doesn't rain soon forget about diving........ one will be able to wade the whole thing.
Great video. And yea, wow water intake inlet is quite a scary thing to come across. Good thing you turned the dive and great to mark it for future divers.
I’d love to see more! Always have been interested in what’s down there. My aunt used to say there was a “lost city” down there.
There used to be two separate towns where canyon lake is now , most of the buildings were dismantled but craines mill along with a post office is supposed to still be down there intact
I've been down there to about 85 - 90 feet, Witnessed a big 40# striper. I was diving Medina lake near the dam at about 80' (40 years ago ) and we got into some different looking clear dark green water. We could hear a roaring noise and knew we were at the mouth in the damn outlet at the bottom. Scary stuff.
This is interesting.. I always think of the dangerous parts of dams to be near the "intake towers" or other very visible things that are known for danger. But what you are describing is Medina dam does not have this and there was some type of water intake near the bottom of the dam and on the structure itself... I find dams very interesting but I would never dive near them.... there should be a dam safety class :)
We used to take huge rocks and jump off by the damn and see how far down we could get at Canyon Lake. One time I was going down fully extended with the rock in my hands and something the size of a small cow ran into me. I was huge and slimy and I assume was a catfish but I didnt stick around to find out. I literally walked on water back to my friends and have never swam near the dam again. A small cow you say? YES I was a 200 lb varsity baseball player in very good shape and this thing pushed me under water like I was nothing It was so heavy and solid that to this day 28 years later I believe there is or maybe some animals in that lake over 500 lbs.
Wow that sounds scary! The only thing I have seen that big are buffalo carp….that could very well be the lake monster that you encountered
@@scottbauerbelow I dont know, not going back down there to find out being pushed around in the pitch black by something bigger than me was good enough reason to stay away from the dam.
I work right across from this park at the jacobs creek peninsula. Ive helped alot of divers get into the water state and military. Its cool to see it from your perspective.
@scottbauerbelow I don't often get to see it from the water perspective like you got so I couldn't answer accurately. Although my opinion from knowledge comal park is probably one of the cooler places to dive specifically for that cliff and over hang carved out by the main channel of the lake.
There should be a protective fence on the opening of that intake pipe.
And dive crews need to pick up the litter in lakes.
Agreed….however people need to stop littering the lakes in the first place…
I live in San Antonio, and I have always wondered what it would be like to dive in Canyon Lake. Not very many fish, but really cool looking. Thanks for the video 😎👍!
You should dive overlook park, it’s one of my favorites and the visibility is always decent on that side of the lake
@@scottbauerbelow Unfortunately, I don't dive. I'm really glad you do because I can live vicariously through you.
The intake pipe has a grate over it to prevent large objects, like people, from getting sucked in. The truck looks like a Chevy S10.
i almost drowned there after falling off a jet ski. It was scary at first and remember being calm under water for a bit before gathering the last of my energy to swim back up. I think about it alot..
the truck is a 88-93 chevy s10 btw
Wow! That’s crazy, sounds like the impact rung your bell a bit? Glad you were ok!
How do you drown if you know how to swim? Unless under current takes you down
@@johnford8335 the undertow or w/e is very strong in that lake… lots of ppl drown there. didnt help that i was wearing cargos and a shirt and overweight
Oh that intake had my anxious for you! I worry about intakes and damns on the surface. And I'd guess that truck is a Ford Ranger in the year range you suggested, late 80s to early 90s.
Thank you! Yeah that trusts paint still looked really good too…I wonder if it has actually been down there that long?
There is an underwater Horseshoe cave near the dam... I pulled a drowned guy out of that thing when I was younger... it was terrifying
Sorry to hear that, what exactly is a horseshoe cave? Do you mean a grotto?
@@scottbauerbelow
He probably means Horseshoe Falls downriver from the spillway.
Before the 2002 flood, it was about 8 feet tall falls and people did drown there on occasion. The flood carved the “gorge” and filled in the falls to where it is now only about 2 feet high.
I have a section on it on the video “Guide to the Guadelupe River from the spillway to the horseshoe” on my channel if you want to see it.
Be well
Often can't hear what you're saying for the background music.
I'm guessing that intake pipe has a grate over it; I believe you can sort of see it in the video you shot. Was this dive recent? Looked like at least one of you was diving dry but not everyone - what are the water temps like? I'd love to get down there and poke around in Canyon Lake.
Yeah it does but I would imagine you wouldn’t be able to get off of the grate lol, these dives were all from July through august and a dry suit works great because the temps are in the 60s below the thermocline but I was fine in my 5mm…it’s pretty warm up top…it’s a great spot to dive you should check it out…just avoid the building on the ridgeline lol
Tried to watch, but the music is so loud I can’t understand what’s being said. Lake is 20 minutes from me and really wanted to hear it.
I’ve noticed the sound is like that when it is being watched on tv’s or any system that has a lot of base…I try to keep that into consideration on my newer videos
@@scottbauerbelow 1993/1994 I spent in Okinawa. We would dive 4 nights a week. Loved it! Unfortunately haven’t done it since. Even with the volume off, I enjoyed it.
I've been to Canyon Lake dam and other spots for cave jumping.
When I was stationed at Ft Hood during the late 70’s, we use to hear stories of divers seeing huge catfish the size of grown men at the bottom of Belton Lake, the water was dark unlike Stillhouse Lake which was blue. We never went into the water at Belton Lake.
I've heard the story of huge catfish, size of a man or the size of a Volkswagen, almost from every lake that I've been to in Texas!
Hello Scott! My name is Karla and I live in one of the coves of Canyon lake it is a very interesting area. I am interested in the project you were talking about. How could I get in contact with you or the gentlemen that is organizing it?
Looks like a PA quarry dive. Ever thought to organize a clean up dive with lift bags and get the garbage out of the lake? Im moving from Hollywood Florida to Austin later this year, its going to be tough to leave diving with sharks to going back to diving my drysuit with catfish. 😂The ledges look interesting, Ill bet you find cell phones, sunglasses and other stuff. Probably be a good place to use a magnetometer. Thanks for the video, lets me get a better idea of what i have for diving. How is diving off of corpus cristi or N mexico? I think an oil rig dive would be cool.
You are right about the cell phones, overlook park which is in this same lake is great for finding jewelry and iPhones that swimmers dropped….oil rig dives are amazing as well, there are a few charters that will take you out to them but the best offshore diving is on the MV fling and will take you to oil rigs as well as our coral reef…I have a few videos about this posted on my channel
I operate two underwater drones I’d love to dive with y’all sometime
I had no idea it's there! Btw did you forget your gloves? 😁
@Scott Bauer Below ok i bet the temp was like 🥶, and you have your gloves on and off. I'd need new hands after that 😅
yea it used to be a city i live north side it devils island is exposed now to where you can walk to it and crazy stuff pops out you should go back to see it
Is there markers to warm you at the water level
Not really, the only reference I have is looking at the building at the top of the hill….the lake is quite a bit lower now so I would image the intake is about 15 to 20 feet deep bit I can’t be sure
Don’t skip leg day and you will have the confidence to stand up to delta p next time. “I double dog dare you to touch it”
I go there once every 5-10 years to see how much the water level has dropped. I swam to the island in 2015.
I haven’t check out the island lately….i wonder if you can walk there now?
So for reference.. that pipe is near that building? What depth? Did you hear it running?
The depth may be around 25 to 30 feet now that the lake is a bit lower…it should be directly below that building
are there any dangerous animals in the water?
There shouldn’t be any wildlife in canyon lake that is dangerous…they did catch an alligator by boat ramp 11 two years back but it was very small
A lot of drownings in that area through the years... deep drop offs are dangerous for poor swimmers.
Floods wash a lot of things into the lake.
Please turn the volume down on your background music
What device are you watching these videos on? I noticed it can be difficult to hear the voice overs on some tv’s
Come on down to lake amistad. On the border. 3 rivers fill the lake an i can show u places to dive ? If u are the person who did this video ? If not i apologize
That sounds awesome! Send me a dm through Facebook I would love to get some info
Canyon Lake is 23 feet below average right now
Absolutely correct! This was shot about 2 years ago, I really miss it!
I live nearby hike on the trail often on the north side Strange these trucks and cars weren’t recovered. WORD, Corps., GBRA or whoever has jurisdiction should clean up the lake while it’s so low.
This truck was about 60 feet deep when this was made…it may only be 40 feet underwater now
Being their are parts missing on that truck........it was probably an insurance scam.........
Why do you have to add music??? It is quite loud. It conflicts with your narrative, and for certain types of hearing deficits, it can cause the watcher to be unable to hear you. It can defeat the purpose of the content and is very annoying.
It’s an older video, editing is a learning process, my videos have a different feel now
I live lakefront off about a 1/2 mile from your dive....i had a "phantom" sailboat and a "dolphin" sailboat stolen from the lake edge like 10 years ago...the phantom was recovered all the way in the oaks subdivision torn to pieces but still floating and the dolphin was never found...i only say this cuz they are both very similar...almost identical to the sunfish
To be honest I was just assuming it was a sunfish because of the shape of the cockpit….are there any identifying features I should look for?
I certified here. almost died one summer at the intake pipe. Alligator gar's can be HUGE. best time to go is after rainfall. water is crystal clear
They are actually spotted gar and long nose gar…if there would alligator gar that would be pretty cool bit you won’t see those until you go downstream a bit and get closer to the gulf
Thanks for this informative video. We live in the area and my kids take the boat out all the time, but the lake is so low now. It's sad too. I'm working in Del Rio, contract job, and talked to a man who works at the Department of the Interior, Federal level. He came to my office with some paper work for me to fill out for the city. We were talking about what they did at Lake Amistad. The federal government removed a million tons of trash and debris out of the lake because it's so low. The project is now complete and the reason for the paper work. I was told they take pride in their lake here in Del Rio and want it safe for everyone to enjoy. What a wonderful thing they did for this lake. I wish other lakes would follow suit, especially Medina Lake as it only has 2.6% of water in it currently. So sad. We need rain God, please! Have you dived Lake Amistad? It's gorgeous!!!!
I have not! I have been wanting to go there for a while now
