Just in time for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story - here is the real story of the iconic Queen!
Queen Charlotte went from minor German country gentry to Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. Charlotte stayed out of politics as her husband lost the American revolution, and she lost her dear friend, Marie Antoinette in the French revolution. Charlotte made numerous cultural contributions including introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and throwing the first debutante ball. In her later years she had to watch as her husband slipped into mental illness and her children struggled to produce a new generation of royals.

As wildly (and openly) inaccurate as Charlotte’s story is in Bridgerton, it’s interesting the historical facts they did incorporate like her bringing in a young Mozart to play for her, her addiction to snorting snuff, and the unlikely situation of having so many kids reach adulthood but have no legitimate grandkids such that it threatened a succession crisis. I had been sure that last one was just for the drama!
her personal royal physician Baron Christian Friedrich Stockmar, described her as having a "true mulatto face" her own doctor said that. and is it a coincidence Meghan and Harry choose May 19, Queen Charlottes birthday to have their wedding?
@@Roma-SRyan Yeah, well, she was not black, so. Go on.
I thought it was the great Austrian empress Maria Theresa (mother of Marie Antoinette) who had Mozart play for her but he may have played for Charlotte later on in his life but I'd say they have altered the true facts to suit their narrative!
@RomasoRyan OMG! Absolutely 💯! Also many fair skinned black people can pass as white! Fact also Charlotte's portraits were lightened. However features clearly showed not lily white.

She sounded like her granddaughter, Queen Victoria. Both had lots of kids but hated being pregnant...
The difference being, Victoria also openly hated her children 😂
@@HeidiSholl Poor Victoria was under her Mother's stern care. She was not allowed to play with other children for fear of becoming ill. She was not allowed to go down any stairs by herself, someone had to always hold her hand. She also shared her bedroom with her Mother. It wasn't until she became Queen that she had any freedom. She never had any experience with children, except her Mother's ideas. Victoria knew little of childbirth and raising babies. Prince Albert spent more time with their children.
@@westzed23 It's pretty well documented that she disliked them into adulthood, not just as babies. She was a control freak, she might have had her first taste of freedom when she turned 18, but her children kept having to fight for theirs. By all accounts, she was a pretty horrible woman. I don't have much sympathy for her. Regardless of tragic backstorys, some people are just cruel.

Although the Bridgeton spinoff it’s not entirely correct, I have to say I really am enjoying the series. I feel as if they portray George III in a much more personal manner, rather than being known as a mad king he is shown as a genuine kind man with mental illness. They really truly loved each other.
When you say not entirely you mean total bs
Yeah well Shonda never claimed any historical accuracy in her shows. I don’t get why people seem to not get the difference between period dramas and documentaries. There are many shows loosely based on people who existed in real life and nobody seems to mind. Even the Bible comes to mind in that department lol but with Bridgerton people are VERY salty about the historic inaccuracies 😂 it’s obviously fiction, why wouldn’t they take artistic freedom? Just a tiny correction: Charlotte's journey to London from Germany for her marriage to George III didn't take 2 months. She left her home on August 17, 1761, and arrived on the shores of England on September 7, 1761, so it took about 3 weeks.

As someone with HCP, a type of porphyria under the Hepatic Porphyria umbrella, I’m glad you are covering Queen Charlotte and George III. The disease/disorder is a nightmare not just for the sufferers but the ones close to them (family and other loved ones) especially. I really loved the costuming in Bridgerton, one of the things I noticed is how Queen Charlotte still wore the tight corsets and big skirts even when by the main storyline/ foward time jumps the high waisted dresses became more in fashion. I remember thinking how i loved the corsets they were giving so much more! and I love the fact even as time changed she didn’t care lol made her so much more “queenly” in my opinion lol
The one part of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story that I despised was the portrayal of the princesses. While I know the show wasn’t meant to be historically accurate, but the fact that the writers made it seem like the princesses chose to be single is rather annoying. It was the monarch who chose when royal princesses could get married and to whom.
George III and Charlotte chose to disregard marriage proposals. George didn’t want to part with his daughters and Charlotte wanted to spare them the agony of constant pregnancies.
I can overlook all the other inaccuracies because it’s a fictional show, but that one I just can’t tolerate. Seeing Charlotte berate her daughters when they, in reality, wanted nothing more than to marry and start there own lives was just too much. I loved everything else about the show but that.
This would have been interesting in the show - but would be a bit contradictory to Queen Charlotte’s character in the show and probably hard to convey in the little segments covering this.
If they do a season 2 it would be nice to see this explored.
I was mad about that too
Shonda has taken real ppl in European history and put them in a bulshit black cultural behaviors and lifestyles. And since ppl don’t know history, this type of crap is appropriating and trying to rewrite history.

George being portrayed poorly is just symptomatic of the really crappy way American schools teach about the political behaviour of the British government during the revolution. Like, they do not do a good job

Only enough to prove she wasn't black.
While the new series does take a lot of liberties (and quite boldly), I like how it pays homage to certain elements that were drawn from historical record. Charlotte and Augusta’s contentious relationship and the race for her children to produce a new heir after Princess Charlotte’s death were favorites of mine.
it only seems bold due to intentional historically revisions. Harry & Meghan choose to have their wedding on Queen Charlottes birthday, may 19. coincidence?
Those are used for storylines because they’re dramatic and they lazily want to pluck whatever most dramatic stories are already written for them.

He, his mother and the Danish Court drove her to depression but of course her affair with Christian's doctor was the end of her as Queen. But Dr. Struensee was at least making small, probably temporary inroads with Christian and his madness. Nevertheless, Carolina's very early death after being booted out of the Danish Court, at only the age of 23, was quite sad. All she wanted was the love of her husband, like George. And to my mind, the worst part was that her brother, who sought love just as she did, would not, could not rescue her from her awful fate.
You’re so great at doing these videos. Thank you for making them. Excellent work.
I was waiting for this ❤❤❤thank you :)

This was so fascinating and interesting
Really enjoyed this ❤
Very enjoyable. Thank you.
The mental gymnastics some people go through to argue that this white Eropean woman should be classed as mixed is trully amazing. She had a small trace a Moorish ansesrty, no more than ~1%. There has never been any serious academic contention over whether or not she was white, she definitely was, the small level of contention revolves around her supposdly non white features and given that these acusations were based on the nonsense pseudoscience of physiognomy, no legitimate historian takes them seriously.
*There has never been any serious academic contention over whether or not she was white* . Guys like you are never satisfied even when the evidence of her complexion is presented to you. You can check this if you want. She was described as a *true mulatto face* by a court physician. Samuel FB Morse wrote in his book that *she was of a very sallow* complexion. If you combine a *true mulatto face* with a *very sallow complexion* what do you get? Not only that some of her Great-grand children were described as such and even photographed as such. But you still won't be satisfied. There is no reasoning with your kind. If you want to disagree with the interpretation of the evidence that is fine, but don't disagree with evidence.
As to whether she could retain African features from ancestors going back 500 years, it has clearly skipped your attention that Europe's royals tend to marry their cousins to a varying degree of distance. Why should her alleged African ancestor's descendants lose their African traits after 500 years is they marry within same narrow circle of extended families?
@@vfclists The only painter, that painted her with "african" features was Allan Ramsey, who was an Abolitionist. Another man that knew her, called her uncommonly pale.
@@vfclists sallow is yellowish, most likely she was ill at the time. Clutching at straws again as usual, so DESPERATE to find blacks in Europe? Why?
@@vfclists Hapsburgs action.

Amazing video
Wow Lindsay, I really liked your video and it surprised me it came out so quickly. Just in time for the neftlix show. Here an interesting fact: Allam Ramsay's wife, Margaret Lindsay, was the paternal aunt of Dido Elizabeth Belle!
Wasn't it Prince Albert who introduced the Christmas tree to the UK?
I thought that was the case
It was Victoria and Albert who popularised the Christmas tree , ordinary Britons did not copy Charlotte's Christmas tree, but Albert's inspired a the national uptake of the custom.
He popularized it, Charlotte introduced it
Well both were germans so...
Thank you
Great video thank you
