- David "Dave" Norton is a character in the Grand Theft Auto series, appearing as a central character and deuteragonist to Michael De Santa in Grand Theft Auto V.
Norton is a corrupt FIB agent, working under Steve Haines.
Little is known about Dave's background, other than he began working for the Federal Investigation Bureau at an unknown point in time. At another unknown point in time, Dave married an unnamed woman, though they have since divorced. According to Lester Crest, Dave's career with the FIB had been "unremarkable" until 2004, when he discovered the whereabouts of bank robber Michael Townley in Ludendorff, North Yankton. Dave made a deal with Michael to surrender his accomplice Trevor Philips to the FIB, whilst Michael would fake his death after being "shot" by Dave, in turn boosting Dave's career for taking down the "most wanted man in America".
In 2004, during the events of "Prologue," Dave ambushes the heist team as they make their escape. Using a sniper rifle, he attempts to shoot Trevor Philips but accidentally shoots Brad Snider instead, and feigns a shot at Michael. Trevor manages to escape and Brad later dies, and Norton allows Michael to provide information to the Bureau in exchange for a new identity, a pension and a relocation to Los Santos. To aid this, Brad is buried in Michael's grave.
Post-Prologue
Some time later, Dave intercepts a letter to Brad who is believed by the public to be incarcerated. The letter is unnamed but was sent from Sandy Shores, and Norton deduces that it was written by Trevor. Assuming Brad's identity, Norton begins corresponding with Trevor as a means to keep track of him.
For the next nine years Michael has been living in Los Santos under the surname De Santa, with Dave keeping in contact with him. Norton arrives at Michael's mansion after Michael and his protege, Franklin Clinton, robbed a jewel store, warning the former that this act will attract Trevor.
Norton is a corrupt FIB agent, though not to the extent of his boss Steve Haines. Unlike Haines, he is portrayed as a reasonable and polite man, preferring to solve problems amicably instead of using violence. However, he is more than capable of breaking the law if it means maintaining or advancing his career.

Dave is my favorite character. He’s one of the few characters that isn’t a joke. He’s like the opposite of comic relief. He’s the brief relief FROM the constant comedy. I could see him showing up in GTA IV. He fits in better with the HD Universe than a lot of the others
Nah he’s better off here he’s the more grounded character that gta 5 needed. By no means is he a good guy either I mean he’s the one making an illegal deal with Michael and covering up after him in exchange for money but at the end of the day he could’ve rolled on Michael and screwed him over yet he didn’t and he continued to honor his deal with Michael
He is like Mike Ehrmantraut in GTA universe
My favourite aspect about Dave’s character is that he rarely, if ever, acknowledges how crazy a situation is, it’s like he’s numb to the GTA universe and how weird it is, even when he’s caught up in the middle of an insane mission it’s like he’s seen it 100 times already
I like the last phone call between Michael and Dave after the story. When they bid each other farewell, I feel that Michael and Dave genuinely wished each other well.
They did because even though Dave did use Michael. He still tried his best to not get him killed. Steve forced him to bring Michael in the corrupt jobs.
Michael knows that Dave did manage to keep the FIB off them and that’s exactly what Michael said to Trevor when Trevor said let’s kill Dave. Dave realised that Michael managed to get steve off him and got him off a lot of stressful tasks. Dave probably got himself a promotion too.
@@General_D1 Michael paid Dave to look out over him and his family, which Dave fulfilled that role. They both sorta used each other. Michael needs Dave so he can get out of the mess and run away from the group with the money he robbed.
Dave used Michael by going secretly against the FIB helping Michael escape. Trevor was supposed to be killed, but instead it was Brad. They went along the plan and it ended well. Michael ran off, changed his name, and he has Witness Protection Program (Supposedly according to him, which he never did).
After Trevor showed up, it got scary. But Michael assured Dave he wont let Trevor get to him and thankfully succeeded. But Trevor almost remembered him but got over it.
So, after the big fiasco, they both got what they wanted. Michael is free from Trevor, his family is safe, he doesnt need Dave to watch him anymore.
Dave got promoted, he is living comfortably in his new position and still has the money Michael paid him. They both parted ways at a good note. Business was good between them.
Honestly Dave was pretty cool
Yeah. Honestly he should have been Steve's boss, given he was older and everything. He was the only guy in GTA that didn't seem to have a stick up his ass, besides maybe roman or jacob in 4

@curtisfriley8853 he wasn't a great guy by any means but he wasn't a bad guy either. He was just looking for ways to advance his career and then protect himself from his secrets getting out, but he wouldn't stab those close to him in the back or sell people out to achieve those goals. He could probably have sold michael out numerous times during the game to save his own ass but he doesn't

he earned his happy ending though, he took over Haines' show and had no boss anymore since Haines is dead.
I loved it how Haines gets shot on the leg twice but the very next time we see him he's as good as new.

I like Dave is a pretty straight laced dude. He means well, generally. He could’ve sold out Micheal, but he never did. That means *something,* not much, but something.
I mean tbf Michael could testify about his illegal deal with him which is exactly what he mentions in the wrap up except to Steve not Dave. The deal Dave and Michael had was illegal and Dave would’ve also landed in prison and lost his career if Michael or him got found out so they needed each other. It doesn’t change the fact that Dave seems to genuinely value Michael and doesn’t want to kill him or anything
When he knocked Michael unconscious he did say he kinda like him.
Just shows Dave actually has respect for Michael. As corrupted he is, he’s the nicest out of all corrupt FIB we saw.

Dave definitely isnt a great guy but he's also not an asshole or a scumbag or anything like that who would throw other people under the bus just to save his own ass, he does whats necessary to save himself and his secrets but hes not evil or a terrible person

20:02 Dave was the only one in this scene holding a pistol with one hand. Even Michael had to hold it with 2, which speaks volumes.
What speaks volume is Dave defending Michael. He wanted to handle the situation because even Dave knows Michael would listen since they are practically friends. They both respect each other so he could have handled it well.
But they had to ruin it by walking in on them during the conversation.

Now this video only has the cutscenes it doesn't show the phone calls so I'm sure there are a few swear words that I'm missing but seven swear words.
It's kind of interesting that he doesn't swear a lot and I think that's because he's a no-nonsense character.
