Pickled onion suggestion. Purchase some small onions, peel them and put them in a jar of malt vinegar for a month or more.. That's what Pickled onions are.
In the UK we no doubt have a particular selection of onion strains that are used for this. I think any small strong tasting onions will work well enough.

Pickled onions can be quite astringent, silver skin ones are sweeter/milder. I usually use jars of pickled red onion slices instead, which provide the acidity without the astringency. I'm not overly keen as a crisp flavour. I rather like Walkers Salt & Shake which are unseasoned crisps, with a sachet of slat in the packer, so you can season them to taste.

I absolutely loooove both those flavours of Fries. The bacon flavour is much better than Frazzles. Love the bacon wheat crunchies too. Traditionally sold over the bar of a pub. White bread holds more water than brown bread, so it is more pliable and makes a better sandwich, where the bread is just a contents delivery system, so the lesser flavour of white bread compared to brown isn't a factor. Same for a chip sandwich: the white bread bends easier and doesn't break up when bent and squashed to eating size.
As for pickes, try pork pies. The store bought "pork pies with pickes" chop up the onion, and SOME "bespoke" or "premium" put a whole pickled onion in it, if it is chopped up it is more flavour enhancing while if it is in large pieces or whole, it will have bites of "no onion" and bites of "entirely onion", which may be less palatable to both of you, so pick the cheaper.

Agree with Jeremy, the pickled onion Monster Munch are the better flavour, but agree there are VERY strong! - You MUST try Twiglets if you haven't already, I prefer cheese and onion Walkers, or Ready Salted to go with sandwiches and a coke or a beer... Crisp sandwiches are great too (another student type meal) - Try Discos too and I LOVE Roysters - steak flavour, can be found for £1 for 5 small bags... Wotsits are great, softer than your Cheetos, but they now make Giant Wotsits which are even better, but they do stick around your teeth - Quavers, are not bad, a bit like eating flavoured polystyrene, original flavour is chesse, but the sometimes hard to get Salt n Vinegar ones are devine... they also do Prawn Cocktail Quavers, as well as Walkers Prawn Cocktail crisps, which I hate, so if you like Prawn Cocktail flavour, go for SKIPS! Many supermarkets have their own versions of the crisps and snacks, but I tend to prefer the branded ones... Gary :)

Not sure if you have tried them but Walkers have a max range. I'd suggest giving paprika flavour a try. There's also max strong if you like your heat. Pickled onion crisps tend to be more salty whereas pickled onions themselves are mildly vinegared onions

Loving your reactions to our household snacks, can't believe you don't have these in usa, what do you snack on then..? Note on the sandwich...any flavour crisps for a sandwich but has to be potato crisps ☺, not space raiders, monster munch, etc...they are not technically crisps to me

    • @TheMagicGeekdom
      @TheMagicGeekdom  Před 2 lety

We have a lot of similar snacks, but a lot of the flavors are different. For example, our Lays are the same as your Walkers, but the flavors are very different.

    Hi guys
    Deb from Wales here
I love pickled onions, my mother used to pickle here own and I ate thousands of thrm.
They are also in a ploughmans lunch which consists of:
    Cold meat, e.g. ham
    Crusty bread and butter
    Pickle such as Branston pickle
    Other items could include
    Green salad
    Boiled eggs
    Apple
This was the meal in centuries past which the farmer took out to his ploughman to be eaten in the field. Hence the name.
If you like pickles and relishes you should try PICCALILLI, which is vegetables picked in a mustardy sauce. My grandmother used to make a green tomato piccalillii and member of my family could not get enough of it and it was delicious.
In the UK it is against our laws to use artificial colourings and additives and preservatives in our food, so Wotsits will not stain you hands as do Cheetos do in the US
SCAMPI is made from crustaceans such as prawns/shrimps, langoustini, which are cut up into bite sized pieces and then covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried and are delicious. In British pubs in the 1970s it was common to have scampi and chips.
I prefer the Bacon Fries to frazzles as well
Oh gosh I have not seen Space Raiders since I was a kid.
My recommendation for you to try next are
    BURTON'S
    FISH 'N' CHIPS
which are fish and chipped shaped potato snack, and come in salt and vinegar flavour and just so so moreish.

Marks and Spencer's "cheese tasters" are like Wotsits but thicker, cheesier and so much nicer... but every Brit has heard of Wotsits - most won't even have tried M&S cheese tasters. I assure you though, try them and you'll find they are just a better version of Wotsits....

I pickle my own onions for Christmas time , it's really easy , I use baby onions , you just peel them , put them in a jar to the top and cover in malt vinegar , tighten the top of jar , and leave for a couple of months ! The longer you leave the better ! Try it
