    The UK always complains that they never win and it’s always political. But they constantly send in the same old rubbish we hear on the radio instead of sending charming Eurovision songs.
    Also, it’s not always a political thing because Sam Ryder literally made us hosts in 2023!

      100% Correct! Why can't they ever actually let the public vote who we want to represent us instead of the prime minister choosing and sending in people who obviously can't actually sing!
      Also, the only reason we actually got to host is because we came second, and Ukraine couldn't host, so we was the next best thing

      I (from the U.S.) completely believe the UK would've won 2022 if Ukraine had bowed out due to their conflict. It might have been reasonable for the EBU to give them an incentive to bow out as they were not the aggressor. That didn't happen, which leads us to where we are now..... Yes, UK was robbed of a victory in 2022... Maybe UK needs to send Sam back in 2025?

      Yes, it says that Olly can't sing live. When he performed with years and years he was always autotuned and that's not allowed at eurovision so you could hear how terrible he is for once. Plus the song was dull. The last three winners- The code has the "wha-oh-oh"s, tattoo had "like a tato-oo-ooh", Stephania had the mesmerising chorus and flute solo. All get stuck in my head when I think of them. Dizzy had a flat, dull, nothing. No build up to a big conclusion even. Just nothing catchy or singalong or stick in your head, nothing. We don’t have a lot of Scottish Gaelic singers or musicians who would fit Eurovision as it’s mostly traditional folk or electronica. Same with Welsh. We usually send English people as they make up 84% of the U.K. which people don’t realise that often

  • @ennythinn
    @ennythinn Před měsícem +13

    The first article is actually very fair and reasonable.
    The second article was written in 2019 and after Sam Ryder's success in 2022 nobody blames Brexit anymore.
    I actually think the staging and performance helped it gain points from the jury.
    The problem is that everything it was trying to be, other countries did it better.
    Switzerland had a better LGBT anthem. Ireland was edgier. And there were several artists who are more powerful singers.
    I've been saying it for years. The UKs biggest problem is that the songs are not competitive.
    We praise ourselves when we release a song that is good enough for the radio but that is not enough. The song needs to be good enough to win a Brit Award.
    Most UK Eurovision songs are far too simple. The focus is on catchy hooks but it should really be about captivating the audience.
    Even Space Man is structurally relatively simple but Sam's vocals and the revamp at the end elevated it.
    Don't be afraid to have more complexity in your lyrics. Don't be afraid to experiment with the composition. Don't be afraid to be raw with emotion.

  • @jannahhenkins
    @jannahhenkins Před měsícem +26

    I’m from the UK and I couldn’t agree more! We always send a very generic radio song rather than a Eurovision song, so no wonder we never come in people’s top 10s (and thus never receive many/any points). We are also bad at staging and we normally send a singer who isn’t very good at singing live (or at least they’re not good at singing live while dancing, but they are always make them dance) 🙈 Sam Ryder was the exception to the rule, and I think that success was all down to Sam Ryder himself rather than the UK team. In the same way that Bambie Thug’s staging this year was so good because they gave them creative license.

    Send a better entry… simple as that. Uk is the last country I accept any mourning like nobody likes us bla bla.. the whole world loves British singers and they re leading the charts everywhere.. but if they send crap they get what they deserve. France sent a decent song with a great voice… et voilà again a top placing.. if they sent lower quality they end up in the lower regions too ..

    “We’re doing everything we can” except having a good selection method.
    I’ll use my country as a comparison, in Italy the RAI (our BBC equivalent) picks 30 singers for the SanRemo song festival and the winner out of these 30 then goes to represent Italy at the Eurovision.
    In the UK the BBC just picks one singer and sends it to the Eurovision.

    Speaking as a Brit, Considering that the UK public voted to send Scooch to the final Inwouldn’t put too much faith in them picking a better act. A lot of the artists that we’ve picked haven’t done as well. I think they actually need to get artists who have experienced doing theatre because the discipline of doing a musical 7/8 times a week give you the vocal stamina to handle performing live for big crowds and doing it with choreography. A lot of the really big act on Eurovision have done theatre like Chanel in 2022. Or someone who has done both pop and theatre like Alexandra Burke.

    Send someone with enough physical conditioning to be able to mainting their vocals while doing choreo.
    Performers doing elaborate choreo is not really seen as something cool and artistic in itself in the UK, but rather as a cop-out that's meant to distract.
    That lead to a generation of performers who cant really managerl both dancing and singing because they simply dont have the training in doing both. Which is not their fault, it is due to the nature of the industry, but still.

    The UK needs to dig in their stereotypes alot more, put a good singer in a beautiful suit or a beautiful doll-like dress, put them in a tea cup or let there be big tea set on stage and make a fun song surrounding it all. Think like a 2.0 old Melanie Martinez.
    They could also go more of a “royal” theme since the only Royalty the world knows is the British.

    Welsh people are famous in the UK from having amazing powerful voices we could send in a act sung in Welsh.
    Us Scots have our highland music and maybe have a song in Scottish Gaelic. Scotland is also has a bit more of an alternative streak in our music just a more metal and rock music.
    Northern Ireland is its own bag but sure they could do something interesting comparatively England is a lot more that southern English people singing power ballads and love songs. We can’t roll up and expect others to vote for us when our own Artist doesn’t believe in the country he’s representing. Also his staging while good was just a political statement about sexuality it had nothing to do with the song. The britts gotta wrap their heads around the fact that a famous artist isn’t enough. Especially when most of Europe doesn’t recognize the names to begin with. The vocal performance wasn’t good, and yes, the audiences do care about technicalities that affect the cohesion of a performance. The stage performance wasn’t visually appealing as a whole. You know, a dirdy ass murky grey washing room isn’t pretty no matter how many pretty men you put in it. The choreography was impressive on the part of the play with physics thing, but it didn’t translate onto tv screens because you had no way of knowing how it was shot on stage unless you were told. The point being the box not moving at all actually is a pretty cool aspect in the world of all the technology that is put in staging nowadays, moving pieces and electronic visual trickery. But for the love of Martin ’Step Down Please’ Österdahl, show the stage too! It didn’t feel like an immersive live stage performance but a music video. Admittedly, so did Tattoo, but tattoo was pretty. I don’t think the sexiness was the issue, but that it wasn’t appealing as a whole.
    Also, what is it with Brittish pop and melodies that don’t rise like at all? To me the song was flat from the start. Nice on radio on the background, sure, but depressing on the dance floor.

    As much as selection shows can be fun, the UK has consistently failed in recent years to choose the best song through those shows such. Even Jade Ewan would have been thrown out by the public half way through the show if it wasn’t for an intervention by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
    So no winning formula at the moment but a step in the right direction from where the UK has been over the last 20 years.

I’m not saying we’d win because that’s delusional but we would not be consistently getting low public vote points. Even in 2022 when we sent a good song, we only got 180 points from the public.
