I know nothing of final fantasy but titan in 9 looks so much like he is just here to have a good time but is so large that he can't help but be a destructive force of nature.

To me it looks like he knows what him fighting will do and he's smiling, smiling at the thought of being used for battle and almost eager to continue fighting. Which honestly is a cruel and great way to portray the earth itself. Happy in battle and eager to see it continue. Not wrathful, not intentionally cruel, but cruel in it's joy in combat.

FF9 titan design reminds me of the style of Shadow of Colossus with the eerie emotionless look of the face. It truly has this feeling of ancient old world power. Since we only see its head and arm, it really makes this titan feel so much larger. Leaving it to the player to imagine the unrevealed portions, which add to the mystic. Very cool.

The interesting thing about Titan in XIV isn't even the other titan everyone lovws so much (although it is cool), but that he's probably got the most visual connection to his history as a beast tribe's god. He's summoned by the kobolds, and he's got a big, rough and scary version of the kobold's own faces... which we didn't know until several expansions in, because all the kobolds pre-Shadowbringers wore full masks and helmets.

Titan is an interesting summon. As FF4 was my first FF game I ever played, he was my introduction to summons (not counting the mist dragon) as this giant who was able to literally split the mountains and create a giant canyon from an overwhelmed little girl whose mother was recently slain.
But yeah, I admit that I do put Titan in the same boat as Ramuh where I’m a bit torn away by “giant human-like who is very proficient in their element,” but I’ve come to grow to love their overall design. That and 16 did a nice job in helping to sell Titan as a powerhouse (albeit the fight was definitely extended out far and away). Might not be a personal favorite, but I do enjoy Titan as a summon.

  • @VaryaTheVillain
    @VaryaTheVillain Před 25 dny +8

I find it fascinating that FFX doesn't have Titan in its roster of summons, but it also makes sense? because FFX setting is the one that's closest to nature, to earth, however shattered and scattered it may be in Spira. every summon is an embodiment of the original spirit's... desire? character? or even its culture, with how Shiva's ornaments are reminiscent of Guadosolam, and her coldness is not only due to the environment of Macalania's temple location, but reflection of how Guado as people are perceived as noble and *cold* ... a spirit of beauty, coldness, connection to death, as Guado are protectors of Farplane in their home.
so there is no need for a Titan fayth - he's already seeped in everything throughout Spira. the spirit of the world, if you will.

Hi, Skyen, I hope this finds you well!
I'm a big fan of your work.
I find your personal, at times even intimate, takes on designs a delight to behold.
Your interpretations & views are invariably interesting and well considered to me.
This short is again great work!
FFIX's Titan is also my favorite; as a design I'd say it's head and shoulders above his titanic peers. 😉
I wanted to offer you some information/a correction regarding Atlas, I hope you'll find interesting.
(Mind you, I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned any of it to you.)
It's a common misconception that Atlas holds the world.
Rather, he is holding up the heavens, while standing on the world.
(We can compare it to the Atlas Mountains, with which he became identified: the range is on the earth with the sky above.)
The misconception is due to artistic depictions of Atlas where he's shown as holding up the heavens in the form of a celestial sphere (with stars on it, or constellations as understood in myth).
Many understandably associate such a prominent sphere primarily with our planet (and secondarily with specific heavenly bodies).
Plus the heavens as a whole aren't commonly visualized as a single orb.
And so they misinterpret the celestial sphere as our terrestrial one.
(It's also worsened by modern artistic depictions in which Atlas actually is erroneously holding the world.)
To return to your take on FFXV's Titan: he's aptly holding up a meteor, a representation & part of the heavenly sphere, that would otherwise cause a catastrophe.
    Tell me what you think!

The fun thing about XIV’s Titan is that he physically seems the most strangely shaped, as all the other titans seem to be very humanoid or flat out being a dark skinned human while Titan in XIV appears more rounded and like a rock with legs and arms.
This nicely fits into the idea that this Titan is just the idea of Titan the Kobold beast tribes came up with, he has their face but besides that shares few details with them, looking more like a rock.
It’s a fun bit of in-universe personification, where humans will liken human attributes to abstract ideas (ala Lightning coming from bearded sky guy) the Kobolds personified rock to be like them and brought it into existence.

I do wonder if summons having such drastic design differences between games is canonically addressed? Like I always wonder how a world would explain the differences when this being is already ancient and supposedly unchanged until the next game. If the summons in Final Fantasy adapt per the era that they are summoned to, that would be quite a neat thing. Though I do remember the universe resetting in one of the games, but when that reboot happened in terms of when the games released I don't recall.

I really like XIV's design because he looks like a sumo wrestler. It ties into his fight as it is the first fight with push mechanics baked into it. You could be pushed off of the arena and die like how one of the way to lose a sumo match is to be knocked out of the arena.

Furthermore, it is noted that stomping is a major mechanic of FFXIV Titan and it can work either as a sumo wrestler action or a massive child meltdown action, and thus FFXIV can be recontextualized as the protector of a child undergoing a meltdown, but embodying a meltdown, since at some point FFXIV Titan is summoned from a child who had lost his parents to an attempted summoning of Titan.

The FF13 Titan is actually kinda funny with the fact that they reuse his model for Atlas in 13-2, further strengthening that connection between the ideas of both. Since Titan in FF13 is a Fal’cie, it kinda makes you wonder if the reuse of his model means that the ancient weapons used him as a base for their design of Atlas.

So, this is a little thing; but Titan wasn't actually in FFVI.
    I think his stand-in there was Terrato/Midgardsormr?
I only mention the typo because even though it's easy to argue that the sprite work for Titan is practically identical in the 2D Final Fantasy games: V has a special place in my heart.

When you do 14 you should look into the "Eden redesigns"! They're done by Nomura, but he's not entirely unchained. They have the og 6, barring Odin and Bahamut

FFXVI Titans wins it for me simply through how awesome that fight against him was!
I really wish we could get to fight more Espers this way

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't even realize ff9 Titan was Titan at all. I just thought it was some Fenrir bs

Honestly with how much Eden has been spoiled i don't feel that bad talking about it. I can't wait for Skyen to reach Eden because the new interpretations in 14 for all the summons there just completely rock and need an additional video because many of them are some of the most interesting versions of the summons in the entire series because of the way they are created.

Dont forget the 2nd version of Titan from FFXIV's eden raid series where he rides an ATV and runs over anyone who wanders into traffic.

Atlas does not hold the world, this common error is due to one of the translations of one of the Atlas myths, in fact he holds the heavens

Idk when you produced these, but FFXIV now has multiple versions of the original summons thanks to the Eden raids. Titan has an ATV now.
