    Liz, another step further i follow if i have had a pot heavily infested with mealy bug where it completely destroys a plant and others in the pot are effected, i tip the whole lot out and inspect the soil. Most times i have found the soil also infested with mealy bug. Then i bag up the whole soil and roots from the pot and throw it out. Then I sterilize the pot before using it again before adding fresh soil and plants.

      Good tip Pat. Thanks!

    • @WigantX
      @WigantX Před 4 lety

      I'd add sterilizing the soil itself before throwing it away. You fill a cooking pot with water, you place your mealybug infested pot + soil + whatever left from the plant, and let it boil for 10 minutes (actually you don't need to get to 100°C [212°F], 60°C [140°F] will do as fine, but 20-30 minutes instead). That way you get everything sterilized, and avoid spreading the plague by accident.
      For the survivors, I make a mix of water and soap, and I wash them in a bowl, every 5 to 7 days. Depending on how infested they were, I'd keep the treatment up to a month.
      I still don't get the loving mealybugs part though hahaha

    Thanks Liz, another helpful video. Ugh the dreaded mealy bugs ruined my Red Pagodas because I couldn’t see them until it was too late and they ended up spreading to a few other of succulents but I used Neem oil spray ( mixed with a little dish soap to emulsify it ) just once and it worked really well. Never heard of the methylated spirit one but will try it out if I ever see those horrid little cute, white fluffy things again. The shapes of some succulents makes it so hard to spot them sometimes especially when I’m not wearing my glasses. 🤓 lol

    This is so interesting, for the plant to survive after an attack it tries to make as many babies as possible. Still I really don't like the bugs, they are everywhere! Even plants that I left in my room with mostly closed windows, and they caught the bugs instead of the ones outside... you can't hide from them!

      Depends on the condition of the soil. Some I throw in the garden, others I revive by leaving it out in the open (for weeks) in a wide container, let it dry out and re-use it on big pots and also on plants that are not delicate or limited.

    I use SAFARI pesticide, love it! Kills all pests!! Careful when spraying, don't want to kill honeybees or good bugs! It is a bit expensive but it lasts forever and it is systemic (absorbed by the roots). I NEVER get bugs anymore.
    But if you want, use the water, rubbing alcohol, and 409 mix! 2or3 parts water to one part alcohol and one part Formula 409 cleaner!! Use old soft toothbrush or crafting pipe cleaners. Works great!

    • @panicmosem5969
      @panicmosem5969 Před 2 lety

      @@Victoria-kj3hg no, regular/original 409 cleaner is safe, as long as you add enough water in the mix. It breaks down their outer shell, which doesn't look like much, but alcohol used by itself won't penetrate it. This is also a very effective method to treat scale. In fact, mealies are a type of scale insect anyway.

      Once damaged, there's really nothing you can do but just wait for the plant to grow out the damage leaves. Also good time to take advantage of a bad situation and maybe remove a couple of bottom damaged leaves to propagate. That way you can have some back up plant and all won't be lost.

      Even at 75%, most of the mealybug will still be alive. Just knocks them out but won't kill them. Please check out the video below.

      You can air dry or plant straight away on moist soil(not wet) as long as you don't water for at least a week or when the soil dries up.

      Methylated Spirit is also known as Denatured Alcohol in other countries. Please be aware that the one I use in this video is Ethanol base 95% proof.
      Don't get the one with Methanol. Methanol and Ethanol are different types of alcohol or chemicals. Methylated spirits is Ethanol (alcohol) is what I use. Ethanol is less chemically toxic than Methanol.
      Methanol is extremely toxic to humans if ingested or if vapors are inhaled. Hope you find some Renee. Thanks for watching.
