haha that took more time then i wanted but was very needed! thanks for noticing
Man love the look of this! Thanks for sharing! Might give it a jam
haha,that's really awesome
This distro is basically the windows 10 UI we all wanted.
It’s like they’ve took aero glass and brought it up to present day.
Pretty sure this is my new distro now, zorin is my current but this blows it out of the water imho.
Agree! Still love aero glass style!
try manjaro deepin. latest updates were awesome. like it way more then ubuntu deepin.
I hate the windows ui, kde is actually superior to windows and mac if you configure it right
hey can you help me?? how to calibrate the display color on linux?
@@richenjoshi7054 I found out the best way to do that is using GNOME settings, the color option.
I like the little circle video thingy you have there, it looks amusing when it's in the bottom right corner of that desktop 'coz it then has ears and whiskers.
Wow i didnt know dde was such well thought out option. I already have my ubuntu installed since the beta. I will definitely give this a shot. Thanks for showcasing it.
I’m happy that I found this channel
nice video. finally see something in Linux enticing from frontend perspective.
Great review! Thank you!
I value your opinion dawg! DDE will get a test drive from me. Looks impressive!... lot of thought put into this distro. Ventoy rocks...thank you!
Good video. I was waiting for your review. Seems like you hit on things I'm interested more than other reviewers.
thanks! i'm glad i help. what was it that made you more interesting on my review?
@@NovaspiritTech you touch on the things that I would be interested in. I don't remember if anyone else had touched on the dark theme issue, but it is beta. I'll be installing it on a spare laptop that I have regataos on this weekend. Just a basic i5 8g 1tb HD. I agree with you tho. I like the app menu. I don't like the way gnome does the apps. All on the screen. Can't wait for the final product.
Excellent analysis, thank you.
Great work, Spirit; it was time and I like that I am the first viewer after upload.. Well done.. As all your content..
Good Video , excellent review, I guess it will take some time until DDE is fully functional
Heya Don! Nice to see you covering Deepin Linux! BTW it does look very Windows-esque! 😁
Nice review! I installed it as a VM under Virtualbox to try it out. I also had this "A problem was detected" popup happen a few times. Like you I didn't like the inconsistency with the dark mode. DDE is really nice and I hope that UbuntuDDE gets better and fixes some issues. I am really a fan of Ubuntu and so I like that they use Ubuntu has the base. I could see this replacing Windows eventually. I also tried NEON KDE (which is based on Ubuntu and using Plasma) and for now I think that would be my first choice over UbuntuDDE. It is good to have all these choices anyways. I don't really like vanilla Ubuntu because of Gnome.
I love UbuntuDDE myself. They get a few bugs addressed I will use it full time. Mainly the clock and power buttons having a dark theme addressed. I love the Quake terminal feature. I just wish I could scale the size of it. Also the AM/PM needs to be in the core settings and not just the dock clock. Adding folder grouping to the fullscreen menu is another option. Or if they made the fullscreen menu category organized would help.
The dark/light "mode" you've set is a Gtk theme, not Qt theme and DDE uses it's own framework based on Qt, like KF, many things will be fixed in V20
Similar feeling about this Desktop Environment. Using it on Fedora. This is an example for some other alternatives. Great video, to the point and no fuss. Ibelieve the theme problem is related to the application source (deb vs flatpack). Need to check this out...
Thank u very much for this video
beautiful Deepin
it looks like there are 2 dark modes. one is the theme and the other one is the app dark mode supported for some apps only. makes sense to me. like the desktop too. nice video
Oh. 3:19 not too shabby. It's a faster Cinnamon esque. Setup.
I'd try this out if I have a spare ssd drive.
I believe the deepin apps (eg file manager, screen recorder etc) are the ones that have the dark theme baked into the app. So don't change over when system wide is applied
Thanks...we'll give it a try
this looks really cool. may actually switch to this from pop os once its matured a bit
Hark. A Freshe Video. 😍👍
Good Job! Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Will you Switch to using Ubuntu DDE as your Daily Driver? Or will you stick with Elementary OS?
Hi, Nice video. It looks like it's worth it go give DDE another try. Btw . Why do pronounce Debian like Dibbien? Hint : The names of the couple that founded it are Debby and Ian.
Having used Windows 98, XP, and Windows 10 (the latter for work) aswell as macOS since 2008 on my personal machine, I have to say this looks intuitive and familiar enough to a newcomer. I've had experiments with Linux in the past, but never stuck to it because for me the general day-to-day usability just wasn't there. To me it always felt like I was fighting the OS to get it to do what I want. This DDE, for the first time, looks like something I might want to actually use it on a daily basis, both visually and in terms of software support
some apps you opened are GNOME apps, and they get theming from the OS, while Deepin apps have their own theming.
Hiya Don, great content as always! Would you consider doing a run-down of ParrotSec? It’s a pentesting distro on par with Kali, but is also suitable for a daily driver, imho. I’m curious if you’d agree with the latter.
i use parrotsec as a daily LOL. i feel that using kali os has a good reputation behind it where they include all the pentesting tools but for new comers, having a root account as your main account is a big no no. parrotsec is more suited for daily.
i hope you take some reviews in other distro i like your reviews in elementary os and pop os hope you will review some distro.
That's tilix I love this terminal
People are always complaining about themes. Am I the only weirdo who likes it when the theme ISN'T 100% consistent? There's a limit to my madness but I actually liked the inconsistency you pointed out.
10:00 Really like the Lightshot program I use on Windows
that's what i thought,, even though at some point in time lightshot had some privacy and vulnerability problems
thank you for bringing it up ...installing new software similar to windows or it require BASH .....?
installing most deb packages can be done using file manager
Hoping they release/update down the line with updated Deepin DE
I don't use dde because I love panel at left, and when it left, a want to expand it and tray icons still shows in one column, but they must be at least in 2 like in Windows or KDE.
But in other things DDE is awesome! Still waiting for fixing this one column tray icons issue..
Hey man, excellent video! Like Mohmdyle said, High quality editing! Do you think this will work on an old Macbook 2006 core duo, Snow Leopard? I´m sharing my Windows laptop with my daughter and I really need to give this Mac a second change. I´ve been trying to install other distros, but the Mac, simply doesn´t boot from the usb. What do I have to do to make it boot from the usb? Thanks!!!
You should review of the deepin v20
Oooomg, thats like the most beautiful Desktop ever...
try macos
Hi, great video. Why are icons so small in Fashion mode (looks ugly)? I’ll definitively give that distro a try
There is a LTS final release now. Make an updated video if you can. Thanks.
I tried this yesterday on a USB. It is still very buggy as in firefox not removing the top bar, the fashion style dock while on autohide sometimes won't appear and settings would be completely transparent while on firefox.. but I love it!
How is this desktop environment compared, in term of resources consumption, with the usual kde, xfce, gnome3 and unity?
Is it still for testing or can we actually install it for our use?
I'd love to see a POP DDE
+
Hey, do you know when will the stable version of UbuntuDDE is going to release? I am having trouble with installing this beta version however, I easily installed Ubuntu 20.04.
Does it have window tiling? So I can use an ultra wide monitor and automatically tile windows ?
Good guy Don. Hates the boot up sound, turns it off without annoying his viewers by playing it first.
hahah exactly!!! what are we in windows 95?? boot up sounds LOL
You mentioned games work fine but you didn't specify on which, steam or wine?
Curious if this will ever be avail for Pi/ARM if so, Hope you do a vid :)
Templates folder with any standard file such as text.txt or word.docx, etc have NEVER worked in Deepin (English). Is that fixed yet?
thanks for the video. I am testing as well.
Its very interesting but there is one (for me) important element I am not seen with DDE; adding an online account!
So, all my other Ubuntu flavors, I have the choice to add an account. in my case, I use Nextcloud. So I have the devs:// and on my file explorer I can access my nextcloud files and maybe backup.
Here is not so out of the box. I ended up installing nautilus to be able to map a network drive! Did I miss something on the default file manager?
I posted a few messages in their telegram and twitter accounts but it seems not to be very active channels.
Did you have the same experience?
This, in my opinion, is an important point:
Adding online account easy to setup
Map network drive.
Can you do a review if it's worth moving to this distro for development ?
Can u tell me ubuntu DDE is safe or not?
BeCoz many incidents showed that deepin sent users data to china?
Should I go for it Ubuntu DDE?
GParted and the Ubuntu Software Center are GTK-based, the Deepin Apps are probably either Qt5-based or use their own framework. That's my theory on the dark theme issue.
🤔
Correct
Those are my exact assumptions as well.
Is there a possibility to run compiz on it , because I really want CCSM ?
Is that the beta? Coz every time I go to UbuntuDDE website, I only find that, not the stable release. And today is already 2 full days after the 20.04 release
In comparison with elementary os, although you cannot edit the screen shot directly, you have a very good mail agent and calendar agent, very neat settings menu and finally, shortcuts are as logical, they do not have desktop files because it gets messy and if you still do not like that "no desktop files", you can straighten forward download desktop folder so the comparison isn't fair when just comparing both because of the good screenshot mode in deepin, the point of the whole thing is that there is no need to make the same thing appear more than once (ex. Minimize option can be a shortcut, application menu does not need to appear like in windows as you do not need it because it has a shortcut so there is no point of making it appear)
Just compare in windows where you have a windows button and cortana bar and a multiview (virtual desktop) button, literally you don't need all od those because they are a keyboard buttons
That is why elementary does what it does, making things neat and tidy and logical so you can grab the whole system logic in less time
I'm a Kubuntu guy, but this looks really nice.
Same. I plan on switching over once it releases.
@cgwworldministries What do you mean by that?
@cgwworldministries wtf are you talking about
I'm a KDE Neon guy, and I'll definitely install it on a separate partition
well just use windows 10 :v
all its spywere
For me the keyboard on my old MSI laptop did not work, did someone run into similar problems? I can't find any info on a fault like this.
What is the RAM usage compared with latest KDE?
Can you review the lastest version?
Really excited by this. Deepin is beautiful, but there's no way I'm using an OS from China. Best of both worlds here.
meanwhile you're still using google and all of its services lol
This os is not made in china (which does not mean anything) it's based on the deepin de, furthermore it does not have the deepin software center.
All the deepin apps you have to switch the theme in app
I just don't get the hoppers
I installed resolve 16...with your instructions.....
Patcheed it with givn instructions...it finally opened..
But the problem is ... doesn't show video...only audio comes out...
I did with rocm drivers...
Can u please help me to solve issue..
Is... isnt Ubuntu DDE simply deepin linux with a different background in the start?
Hi Don,
Nice video of a very nice distro; Sorry to come back to this issue... how sure are you and other experts that this distro is as 'untouched' by the chinese [or any other] government?
the theme are not the same because 1. gparted and gnome store are GTK apps, 2.deepin apps use their own QT framework. 3. ubuntudde uses what is now an older version of deepindde checkout the new one that comes with deepin20, you can downloadit from deepin . org
When we get stable version of ubuntu dde..?
I’ve tried it on desktop and Laptop it is way way to buggy constantly crashing. It looks great when it works but that’s only for a short time
What current setup pc did you use for daily used 😁 thank you
usually elementary os... but currently i just switched to use this one. deepin.
Looks cool! gonna try it with my touchscreen laptop
After 3 times I finally got Ubuntu dde working! (The install is VERY unstable) Using it as daily driver and so for I love it. It is very stable for a beta.
did it freeze? or was it a hard drive issue where it would not format?
@Novaspirit Tech Did not freeze just gave me an error code. Got to around 80 percent when it failed. I just rebooted and tried again until it worked. I tried it on a hdd for testing and on a ssd for my main pc and got the problems on both. It seems other people also have problems with the installer if installed on "real" hardware and to on vbox.
But ubuntu dde is much more stable then deepin itself. After you go through the installer.
It bugs me because you can only change the time on the dock to 12 hour and not anything else
Beware people... It's still in Beta... So it might still have a lot of bugs!
Thanks! Great vid!
Question from a Linux noob like myself is why we need so many distros? Wouldn't like 10 be enough or something? Excuse my ignorance here. Just curious.
Mainly because gnu/linux is so free that everyone is invited to create their "flavour". As people are different and like different things, it is natural that different distros appear.
This should not scare people though, as mostly of these distros actually are customizations of major linux bases, like Debian or Ubuntu.
Cuz Linux users have ocd
@@fillipefeitosa4331 Thanks for clarifying Fillipe. Makes sense that we all want our own colors on things =)
Imagine tho if all that energy and skills could be focussed on one (or five?) distro? Maybe, that would mean the end of the Windows dominance?
@@patrickfitzpatrick7245 I'll agree with your point and had the same view a while back. Think of it as creativity being sprouted, compared to locking people into just a few distros.
5:05 what application were you mentioning? I don't think you blatantly stated what it was if you mentioned it later on.
screen shot program
@@NovaspiritTech can it be installed on other distributions with other desktop environments?
What's the package name?
Not sure but everyone is telling me to check out flameshot. It's the same
@@NovaspiritTech I just installed flameshot, it definitely has a good amount of configurability to it. It is a little weird to take a screenshot, but definitely a good idea for a video overview?
I installed lts version a couple of hours ago and I already experienced a lot of bugs and errors. I’m going back to pop os.
What kind of bugs? I'm interested in install this.
Peter Atkin I don’t remember exactly what it was. But some of them were related to desktop effects
@@peteratkin3788 I had tried it as soon as it was released this april. It was a bit buggy, as in touchpad drivers were very bad, the dock would not auto-hide properly, applications would freeze and just overall sluggishness. Went back to Ubuntu after that.
Hi can I run andorid game in this system? And How? Thanks.
Fractional scaling is not depending on DE, but on display server and on libraries used while creating the apps. X Window system has this problem with different scaling on different desktops. I don't think, that a DE is able to solve this problem :) It's one of reasons, why we're looking forward with hope to Wayland.
Security issue complaints were not just because it came from China. Sniffing Deepin’s traffic to their app store showed they were tracking and did not reveal that fact. And when they were called out on it their response was questionable. I followed it for a time but then made the decision that even if they play nice going forward their history was enough for me to choose something else.
Thanks for clarifying that.
Yeah why cant they do a theme for gtk that match the colors of their own programs, Its been that way since deepin came out and still has not changed.
Great video! Appearance-wise it looks crazy similar to Windows 8.1/10 which I found interesting :) Gonna wait until final release comes out then try it
Decent review as usual Don, just wondering if anyone has any "dirt" on the team behind DeepInLinux or know if it's trustworthy? Really like the desktop compared to the traditional gnome/KDE/XFCE etc but not sure if I want to trust my data with potential spyware...
this remix version should be clean from spyware.... since the big blame was the deepin store which has been removed and replaced with ubuntu marketplace
@@NovaspiritTech Thanks Nova, luckily don't and won't ever need any app store after being put of Ubuntu Software Centre some years back. What I would really love to see is a fork of the Deepin Desktop Environment that has been thoroughly audited just to be sure... then again all these tech companies are running off with our data not just China.
haha that's something i agree on. never too sure
cool
you can choose your location to get the updates/packages downloads from. deepin20beta is out , you should give it a look.
I am using ubuntubsince 2016
Can I run gnome tweaks on it?
I hate sound effects. One of the first things I turn off along with double click. Effeciency mode is basicly the W7 taskbar along with the vertical bar on the right wich opens the desktop when you click on it. If they don't fix the dark theme than I would never want to use this UbuntuDDE, but it's still a beta. Maybe it's fixed in the stable release. Dark mode reminds me of regular Ubuntu when you choose the new Yaru dark theme than too everything is not dark. When you choose dark theme everything needs to be dark. Otherwise what is the use?
Dde look.. amazing...I must give it a shot...
Anyways my ubuntu is corrupted..so lets .try dde
it looks like flameshot the screen editor
the themes are different because there not gtk apps there deepin apps which is forked of qt
This is the moment when the Linux GUI outstripped the OSX interface.
Is fractional scaling properly implemented or still experimental like gnome?
Deepin had it for a very long time, and it works great.
@@fredrik2008 Wow! Thanks so much! I just gave it a quick test drive and I'm now wiping my 20.04 Ubuntu FF partition and completely replacing it with UbuntuDDE. The video playback and text is second to none! I'm really excited!
it is buggy still, on macbook some things are big, some are small :V
@@frankfu1122 lol that's extreme, but how did it go for you?
Damn this desktop looks good, I wish I could trust it
Dominik T I’m on the same boat
Why wouldn't you?
did you try deepin 20? at this moment there is a beta available. the dark mode works really fine
can i dual boot with win 10 or ill face problems ?
You should be fine with dual boot
I am testing out the all new 21.04 Manjaro deepin version now ..and ...it's BETTER !
