When I first visited the Vatican, I expected to hear someone make this remark: "Look at how much money the Church has. They should use this to help the poor instead of horde it all to themselves."
But honestly, the immediate irony of the person saying that was astonishing to me. Let’s start by admitting something. St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most laudable achievements of human art, design, engineering, and frankly, guts. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, and it’s overwhelming when you stand in there.
So, yes, it required a significant investment of resources and time to complete. But when people make this criticism, I can’t help but question the sincerity of it, especially when it’s someone who stood in line to get in to see it. If you’re so indignant about the moral compromises required to create that masterpiece, then why are you there viewing and enjoying it?
The fact that he was there, touring it, shows that he has some measure of appreciation for the fact that it exists. And this was no small effort on his part. He flew halfway around the world to see it, like I did. You wouldn’t catch me, or most people, doing that to see Oprah’s house.
And for the person who made this vocal complaint to the rest of the tour group, as someone who is positioning himself as a champion of the poor, so thoroughly invested in their cause, I find it surprising that in his labouring for their benefit, he somehow escaped being confronted with the fact that the Catholic Church, does more to care for the needs of the poor than any other organization on the planet. And yet, this is the first complaint made when visiting the landmark that sits at the heart of the Catholic Church?

Exactly. I’m going to Italy at the end of next month, amongst other catholic shrines I’ll be in Assisi for All Hollows Eve and All Saints Day, and we’ll end out trip at the Vatican. I hope the money I spend there helps the church help others.
FYI you needs tickets to go in but the tickets are free unless you get them through a tour guide. So maybe they should have gone outside of a tour lmao and saved their money instead of donating it to feed the poor 😂😂😂

People always say this kind of thing about the church there is no recollection that the United States government alone has supported countries Through foreign aid that has done nothing to change the plights of the people. I love these arguments. The people who will demand the church sell its property, are also the same people who are not likely to volunteer or perform any act of charity. Even from a purely monetary perspective, if you had the building material and manpower needed to build the Vatican and converted that into funds to feed the poor, I'd be amazed if that money could match what Catholic charities do already for a full year, and yet I feel like a world deprived of the icons of the Vatican would be missing a lot of the inspiration it has had to care for the poor in accordance with the will of God. What would the state of Christendom be like without the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or the Madonna della Pieta?

Firstly, discrepancies in how the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations order the Decalogue is down to how they divide the text into 10 separate commandments. Nothing is excluded by any party.
"IHS" is the Latinization of the first three letters of the Name of Christ in Greek (ΙΗΣΟΥΣ, or "Iota, Eta, Sigma", rendered "IHS").
The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is a depiction of the Bible, chiefly Genesis. The wall behind the altar is a depiction of the Last Judgement. As best I can tell, the temple of Solomon is not depicted.
Lastly, if you think that the devil could somehow invent the act of holy communion, planting words in the mouth of God to do it (Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20, John 6:22-59), then you don't truly believe in God, just the devil, which is something I recon sits just fine with the Deceiver.

Beauty is important. It's a trancendental. No matter what we do/give, the poor will always be with us. That doesn't mean we do nothing, but it also doesn't mean we give up awe inspiring beauty, especially in a place where it matters most.

St. Peter's and all other beautiful Catholic Churches are built by the people as a way of giving glory to God! I always cringe when i hear this argument. It's like ok sell all the church's assets and give to the poor. Then what? Eventually those funds will run out and we'll still have poor people. We're the most prosperous we've ever been and there is still poverty. It's not that there isnt enough money to fix poverty - It's greed and the human heart that causes poverty.
Also, funny how the same people who talk about the church's riches are happy for their local sports team to spend billions on a new stadium. Or to buy the latest iphone just because their old one is 1 or 2 models old
I toured the Vatican and St. Peter's at 15 and our teen tour group had a bunch of old ladies from another state tagging along for some reason. They had like 2 teens and 6 chaperones in their group. One of these little old ladies tagged me in the middle of St. Peter's to ask me if I was Catholic. Now, at the time I wasn't practicing. I was a literally blue haired (fun in Italy in World Cup season) punk kid, but I am a cradle Catholic and I was feeling it a bit standing among all this beauty, so I said yes. She then dropped this bit of "they should sell it all and feed the poor" wisdom on me and I thought basically all of this video along with "who the heck would buy it?" and "what about the wealth of sharing this beauty freely with all comers? Surely the upkeep is pricey, but here we are along with hundreds more," and "you want to sell our history?" but verbally came down on something like, "Uh huh..." and remembered earlier that day in the Sistine chapel when the best adjective they could muster was "big." I see the works of Michelangelo to this day and think, "it's so... big." It's burned into me. And the Sistine chapel is pretty tiny for a church. It was not my most charitable moment, but I think that attitude actually made me more sympathetic to the church in the long run.

The Catholic Church is attacked by her enemies from all sides! On one hand we are told to "live a little" , "why fast?", "why 'find joy' in poverty?". On the other hand we are told our buildings are too grand, altars too ornate, symbols too beautiful ....
These critiques make sense to those who don't recognize that the Catholic faith is not just believing in God (as Satan does) but truly living with God. His real presence in the Eucharist, the supernatural graces of the sacraments, and the inspiration of revelation and history all naturally facilitate the noble human endeavor to build grand, beautiful works for the Glory of God (not the Glory of Man). And, simultaneously, that Glory requires humbling ourselves and becoming a servant in the footsteps of Christ.

I've heard the argument for years. I thought the funniest, truest discussion was between a group of us when "Angels from the Vatican" was touring art museums. If all the artwork was sold, rich investors would buy the most famous works and sue anyone who reproduced them without permission. It would be a trendy thing among well-to-do haters of "god-botherers" to destroy religious-themed works at parties (like those awful mummy-unwrapping parties). We saw Etruscan statues no larger than my hand. Would they end up being sold for a trifle or in lots with other works? How would contemporary artists fare when there was a glut of vetted and authentic masterworks available?

The magazine Business Week published an article on this in the 1990s, before they had an Internet presence. It's a shame they took it down, because even if some of the numbers are outdated at this time, it's not by enough to make a difference overall. For instance, if you took all the wealth of the Vatican and calculated what place the Vatican would hold in the Fortune 500 List, it would rank too low to appear even in the list of Up and Coming Companies, which I think goes to the 500 businesses ranked below the Top 500. It stands out in my memory that Walmart has far greater wealth than the Vatican. But then again, at the time the article was published, another article noted that if Walmart were a country, it would have the 3rd largest GDP in the world. So there's that caveat about comparing the Vatican to Walmart.
One thing the article was helpful with was pointing out that the Catholic Church isn't a single corporate entity that owns all these properties and such around the world. The author first showed that local properties are owned by the Dioceses or individual religious orders, and not by the Vatican. This would be the parish churches, monasteries and such. Yet even cradle Catholics miss this fact, and believe that the Church is a single entity that controls vast amounts of wealth. When one of my local churches was threatened with closure due to the expense of repairs, the parishioners who rallied to keep it open argued, "With all the wealth the Catholic Church has, there's no excuse for repairs not to be made to keep it open." Trying to explain that's not how it works still draws blank stares. Incidentally, that particular church remains open thanks to donations paying for repairs, along with permission from the city's Historic District Commission to use modern lookalike construction materials, as the regulations require the use of authentic period-correct materials in that neighborhood. The church just celebrated its centennial this autumn.

Yes, there has been incredible greed in clerical institutions. But what better use could be made of gold, of stone, of artistic brilliance, than beautiful things that glorify God? What other intrinsic value does, say, gold have? You can't eat it. You can't do much of anything with it except making beautiful things. To create the beautiful is to feed the poor.
