Rt. Hon. Lord Sumption OBE QC: Former UK Supreme Court judge and barrister who has been publically critical of the UK Government’s lockdown strategy. He is also a medieval historian and author of Law in a Time of Crisis.
As Benjamin Franklin said, ‘those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety’. This balance has never been more pressing, after more than eighteen months of moving in and out of lockdowns and waiting for the next to come. Some argue that restrictions are necessary in order to protect society, while others feel that they force us to make unacceptable lifestyle changes. Though we are returning to a world that resembles pre-pandemic life, we cannot ignore the imprint left by the past year. Would we be willing to make similar sacrifices again?
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Too many people have given up the right not to be confined in a place appointed by the state at the discretion of ministers. The right to go where you please without having to justify yourself to the police. The right to associate freely with other human beings. The right to earn an honest living irrespective of whether the state regards it as necessary or useful. The right to make your own judgements about the risks of daily life in the light of your own circumstances and those of the people around you, rather than having a minister decide for you. All liberty carries risks to ourselves and sometimes to other people. Who's responsibility should it be to limit the ordinary risks that are inseparable from social existence ?

The irony here is that the persistent coughers in the audience are the same individuals who are advocates for lockdowns, on the grounds that potentially contagious individuals (ie. anyone and everyone) could in theory pass their contagion on to others if left to roam freely in society.
Maybe it's presumptuous of me to speculate that, in keeping with that hypothesis, those who are showing obvious symptoms of that killer respiratory disease should be the first to do their civil duty and prevent the spread of their malaise by self-isolating, or, at the very least, keep away from crowded environments out of respect for the health of their fellow humans. Unless, of course, their motive is something completely different.
I did not go to Oxford or Cambridge University, so I'm not, obviously, bright enough to arrive at a more elevated assessment.
Any enlightening responses will be gratefully received and ruminated over.

They waited two to three generations of daycare children, who’ve spent most of their lives conditioned to listen to an outer authority and not their own automatic internal system. Let’s raise children to think for themselves. Less intervention and hopefully parents with deep insights of a future they’d like to see and not more of the same. More of the same breeds sheep. That leaves far too much room for wolves waiting in sheeps clothing to take advantage of this conditioning.

I think this argument works well if you’re from a place of privilege. However, if you’re a minimum wage worker do you really have the option of telling your supermarket boss “no I do not want to come into work today because I have made the choice to protect my health.” Obviously not. A lockdown last year would have saved countless lives in those situations. Moreover, as people make this decision to regulate themselves and the NHS becomes overwhelmed what do you say to the people that would die from unavoidable disease that would die from a lack of medical care? Those people that had strokes, heart attacks, and undiagnosed cancer?
