- Today we follow a day in the life of a farmer during calving season.
We start the day taking care of the morning chores and sorting out the calves from last night
A busy day on the farm
Also Kate the border collie is hear to help out
Then we have a few callings to attend to as that day goes on
Some close calls as some of the cows need some help with calving

Well done! Was anyone else cheering on that new calf in its attempts to stand for the first time? So cool to watch. Thanks for sharing, Sean, and thanks to your boss for allowing you to share.
Thanks for watching!
IKR!! I’m cheering it on and my dog is looking at me like “who!?!”. :-)
Mama’s sweet kisses of encouragement were precious.
It's no coincidence, I think, that I love this channel and I love the show All Creatures Great & Small
Thank you
Yes, James Herriot in the Yorkshire Dales! I've read all his books a zillion times since I was a teenager!
I think I enjoy this because Shawn is knowledgeable and conscientious. He has a lot of integrity and is trustworthy. Never a dull moment watching him go about his duties and learning what’s involved in his life in animal husbandry. Thanks, Sean!!
Fascinating! I also appreciate so much that you acknowledge the entire team and that you do not do this alone! Kudos to you and everyone else on the team for all your hard work -and to those calving cows too. It's crucial for us city dwellers to understand how our food is produced and how much blood, sweat and tears are a part of farming. I have nothing but respect for farmers and your tough but essential work.
Thank you yes it’s hard but also very rewarding
absolutely!
I was assistant farm manager on a thoroughbred farm and we foaled many a mare out. Every foaling was as awesome as the last. Even with having to hold your eyes open with toothpicks after a few nights of foaling and and always on the video watch. And always fascinated me that 99% of the time, horses will foal at night.
Absolutely loved watching the calf standing for the first time.
Glad you enjoyed it
Definitely cheering it on!!! Then the desperate search for the teat!!
Would love to buy some merch but not able to in California, US. Be happy to help if you need local distributor🥰
@@sarasilvestro7892 I was wondering why there's no way to "support" the channel...other's have ways to donate with a button. Don't know how YT works in Scotland.
Anyone else let out a cheer when that calf got up on all four legs? 🥰
Thanks to you (and your employer for allowing) for showing people some of the "dirty work".
Thank you
Thanks for showing us the calf’s first moments of life, figuring out how to use its legs. Those heifers are fortunate to have you and the team there looking out for the safety of mom and baby!
City girl here. I am always amazed at how a first time mom knows just what to do. That Hefner was wonderful. That’s enough excitement for me for one day. 🤗I feel as if I was holding my breath. Thank you so much. Love and best wishes for you and yours. From NC, USA.
This is a great side of the work that you do to help bring life into this world!
Thanks
Nothing cuter than newborn calves and lambs and then they start playing. Oh my goodness how cute.!!!
Will say again. You ARE a VERY good husbandman!!! The cows here on the mountain have been calving. Our girls give birth in the open field and it has been COLD up here. These are tough little guys!! Now the herdsman will have to guard against the pack of wolves in this area. Great job Sean. That farm owner is VERY lucky to have you in his employ.
Thank you , glad we don’t have wolfs
Absolutely
As ever awesome video. I notice your eyes look extremely tired, long hours and the worry about potential calving problems. I keep re-watching all your videos numerous times and am learning something new again and again. Taught me to be more observant and it's also helping me understand some of the "quirks" of my Australian shepherd. All the best from northern British Columbia
So moving, thank you Sean for allowing us to witness the births- so glad you’re able to help them- amazing!! Hard work for sure but rewarding ❣️
Keep yourself safe✌🏼💕
Truly amazing to be able to watch this miracle of life. Thank you for sharing this amazing experience with us, along with your explanation of what you were doing and why. Hard work, but joyful 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was nervous about both those calfs, Sean. The wobbly legs of the calf trying to get under mom was so sweet. You are patient and so good at what you do. Best to you and Stacey, SW FL, USA
. I remember that many years ago I was babysitting two children on a remote farm in Caithness, when I heard a great mooing from the byre. I thought about rustlers (don't ask me why!) . 'i went out woth a big knife to see
Not good idea have told you to go out and watch while I rushed home to see she was ok
@@seanthesheepman5845 Ah, if only!
You have such a rewarding life! Thank you for the care you give these animals and especially the love you give your "pack" at home. Please keep sharing with us.❤ from the U.S.
Thank you, Sean, for some of the realities you confront each day.
What? No mousers in the barns? Beautiful calves! ❤ Thank you!
I thought the same thing when he showed the nibbled diary. They may need a barn cat or two.
We get visitors from a few strays but only see them at night
Lol good point, I wonder how the sheepdog gang would respond to cats
The miracle of birth never ceases to amaze me. 🎉
Danke, für den Einblick in Dein Arbeitsleben. Es ist sehr interessant und ich liebe es.
Thank you
New life & new beginnings. What a responsibility you have. Love the videos. Diffinately intense times for all. Be safe Sean. Blessings to you & your wife & the furbabies. ❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing your day with us.
I got a good laugh at the brown cow sticking her head in to the video right after you helped the little calf out. Like they say ..there's one in every crowd! 😂
The opening with your dog looking at you with utter devotion and love was the BEST!!❤️
The only time I've seen birthing (or it looked like it) is on "All Creatures Great and Small". It's amazing to see it happening in real life = real time. Thank you Sean and everyone.
What a star. First breath and first step viewed by thousands. Great mommy too
It takes a lot of patience and endurance to handle all these situations. You're doing a great job. Maybe someday you'll own that place.
Whirly girly, Kate the Great was happy for your attention during the intro! I really enjoyed watching the calving process. That one newborn was determined to get on its feet... just needs to figure which end of mama to find some milk!
Seven more cows calving....I hope everything will be fine and you get some sleep at night!!!
No rest for the wicked I’m afraid
Loved seeing the calves born.
The brown cow watching you in admiration😂
Haha she knows it will be her soon
What a good first time Mum !!!❤🦘
It's a lot of work for you and they all look like grand, healthy calves, Sean; even the little one taking more time looks right enough. Funny how that one cow got wild on you. Hope she calms down soon! That heifer's doing a great job for a new mom. So satisfying to watch the calves stand that first time. All the best for the rest of the season.
Yeah i always like watching them figure out there legs
Calving and lambing season at the same time? You and Kate the Great certainly have your hands and paws full right now. Your employer is so lucky to have you there making sure everything goes as it should. Wishing all the best.❤
P.S. your Ridgeline jacket and hood look incredibly warm and durable, but do they carry warm hats as well? Your ears look so cold!
That was awesome watching Sean. My Dad used to go and work on a farm out in the country and he loved it...:):):)
New life, fresh start.
So heartwarming seeing the babies!
Kate is adorable, that was another great video - thank you
Very interesting video. First time I saw how calving is. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
The owner is lucky to have great and conscientious husbandmen like you and your friends. Good ones are hard to find. Excellent job, get some rest! Lambs are coming!
Thanks for sharing this with us. Interesting to see how calving is. 😊
Thanks for watching!
I can tell you care about all the animals in your care, dogs, cattle or sheep. Hope all the caves continue to thrive.
It honestly never occurred to me before that COWS could be nasty. I thought it was only bulls!!! The birthing was fascinating. I'm a retired nurse, spent some time in midwifery for humans, so this was interesting. Yes was a bit worried when it didn't look like it was breathing at first! The mom is falling in love already. So lovely to see. The other brown cow wanted to see the new one! Strength for the rest of the season, Sean, and also to Stacey, who has punctured nights alongside you as you get up again to help out again! Then after that I guess it's the lambs...
A book well worth reading if you find cows interesting: The Secret Life of Cows, by Rosamund Young. A brief but very insightful, entertaining look at the behavior of cows.
@@JLO47 , thank you for that. I find all animals interesting!
Really amazing work you do Sean! Thank you!
Thank you for showing us the birth. Fantastic 😍
Gets some well deserved rest Sean!!
Yes thank you
The new mom was taking good care of her calf. athank you Sean.
Grateful for vicarious reconnection with my bucolic past
That first cow with the new calf is gorgeous!
Too many cuties Sean .
Good memories for me to see calving. You hava a lot to do. Bless you and your wife.
Job well done by the new momma! I grew up on a farm and although calving was a lot of work it was my favorite time of year. Thank you for documenting these amazing moments.
Wow. I'm so overwhelmed with amazement thank you for sharing!❤
Lovely to see new life coming to the farm!! Do you ever have to pull the calves? It would be interesting to see that life and death struggle that happens when the cow/heifer can't get it out without help. Would the cameras ever catch that, because I know you can't do that and hold a camera!!??
Are these what we call black angus? We had Brahmas, and white face polled Herefords. Cattle have the most beautiful eyes! There’s nothing I dislike about this channel. Nature is something and a pleasure to be enjoyed!
Estou viciada neste canal, como é bom assistir videos assim.Abraços do Brasil😊
Busy days for farmers and livestock
Yeah
Happy Birthday, all you gorgeous little critters! Sean, this was a great vid. Im so glad everything is going well so far. The cows are such good mums. I send them love.
That's alot of buckets with water and feed to manage in each pen. A busy time all round for you.
So many memories of helping calving as a child in Ireland
This is great stuff, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's 20C here today so I don't I need any cold weather clothes for awhile.
Not too bad
Good job, Sean! You should get a raise! >💵💰
"Wwèèlll isn't that special "miracle of birth 🎉🎉
You also gave us another name for KATE.
Very well done videos the music choices that are used always fits, look for till next one.
Heart warming to watch new life arrive, with or without help. Thank you for the video!
I cant help laughing about the mad cow with 'parental rage'😂
Thanks for sharing Sean it looks like hardworking keeping an eye on those ladies and their calves. Hope things go smoothly for the rest of them ❤
Whirly Girly - LOL
You look tired Shaun - not surprising
Beautiful cows and calves. Can you tell us a little about raising cows in Scotland? Are you as worried about disease as England is?
Hi there l like watching this video. The baby calves are very cute
😊 thank you for sharing.tc
In and out. Fast as lightning. Real pro.
Thanks for sharing the videos of the calving season. Keep up the important work!
Amazing! Really captures the emotions of calving. Not the smells, but definitely the feels. :-) So glad the crises were averted and great to see this side of your work! Best to all of you.
Well done you! How lovely to help save struggling calves xx
Thank you! 😊
Nice one Sean. I really appreciate these videos showing the other aspects to the farm.
Ok yes I was holding my breath when that calf got stuck. I was more out of breath than you were at the end Shawn...lol
Thank you for sharing your day with it. I'm a city girl and wow l learnt some things
Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. ❤
You look exhausted!!! Take good care please!!❤️
Wonderful video!
Brilliant video, so glad you were there to catch that little calf in time, AND that you caught it on video, what a pro. You were in and out of there before mama cow could even think about getting aggressive with you. With 7 more to go, how many calves did you have this season? It is lovely to see the new little ones starting to frolic and prance. Amazing how able they are just minutes after birth.
A few resident barn cats could make short work of those naughty mice but I wonder what Kate and her clan would think of them (and vice versa!)
A maneira como Kate olha pro Sean é tão meiga,me lembra minha gatinha Castor, ela me olha da mesma maneira😢
I know as you’ve explained that sadly the wool has lost value on the market.
I live in Canada, and when I was much younger I spun around wove wool.
Have you explored the cottage industry in Canada?
Prince Edward
Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland?
Canada still prides itself on Hudson’s Bay blankets.
Scotland is a part of our Canadian culture.
I love your posts and will with your help, try to find resources for your wool.
This is only if you want.
You are so much a part of my Canadian history.
Verni nice family with very lovely bordercollisar and other dogs
Thank you
The calf is big! 😮❤
Bravo, Sean!👏👏👏
Such an interesting look into another area of your job. At the beginning, when you said ‘calving season’, I thought you meant the ewes!
Good morning from South Carolina
Morning
Excellent video Sean 👍
Sean,
Your dogs are amazing!!!!
Very Interesting video. I’d really love to know more about the farm and maybe meet the owners or possibly some of your coworkers.
You are a great farmer,, Sean!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool video to watch! So interesting.
Brilliant job. Well done🙂
Sean the vet!
Hi Sean. Just so you know, there may be a problem with posting links to Ridgeline with a url that has a query string part (the bit from the ? and everything after). On my phone the text shows, but only the first bit is used as the link so when I click through it doesn't include any of the data that links you to the click. Just worried you might be missing out on some commission. If you can get a url that doesn't have a "?" in it then it might work more reliably.
Thanks for the recommendation. And the great video. This week I watched the great team down here on the Chalk doing the same at Coombes Farm. Good Luck!
Thank you I will have a look at that so kind of you to point it out
@seanthesheepman5845 and apparently Ridgeline doesn't deliver to North America.
Fascinating look into your daily experiences. How lucky are you?
That was intense!! Thanks Sean ❤❤
Yes it was!
Kate is really in love with you ❤
