Looking back, it feels extremly weird. You would think a academy for ninja would take care of such problems as selfishness, beeing concerned about looks or crushing so hard on someone you ignore everything else. Yet....they did nothing on that. Its really just like a school, learning about history and the very basic training things, expecting the Jonin to pick up and work out the mistakes they didnt even bother to fix.
I see your point, but at the end of the day they are still kids, and being allowed to have such immature goals shows that they are still allowed free will yah know? They aren't just born and bred to be soldiers, but instead they all have their own personal goals, no matter how trivial or dumb they may seem.
The Jonin are supposed to, based in their time with the kids, form them i to the ninjas they are meant to he based on the strengths and weaknesses of each. Having small groups allow for more personal interaction between everyone involved, more one on one development, to truly flesh them into who they are meant to be. Its hard to do that in a big classroom when there is one teacher and numerous kids. Gives the kids time to well... be kids. Thats how I see it anyway
