Thank you for this. Montserrat Caballe is the most satisfying Elizabeth for me, including her treatment of the aria. Callas on the Verdi Arias disc is for me the most authoritative.

I like Alessandra Marc and Veronika Dzhioeva in this aria, one of my favorites from the soprano repertoire. I've only heard one soprano sing this aria live and that was Sondra Radvanovsky. I heard Radvanovsky in a Friday night performance of Don Carlo at San Diego Opera in April 2004. Her voice was huge. She flooded the theater with sound during the two big high notes at the end, "il pianto MIO" and "al TRONO del signore".

Anja Harteros is a wonderful soprano. I heard her in person in two performances of Simon Boccanegra at San Diego Opera in spring 2005. Her voice was very large, creamy, and multi colored. Recordings really do not capture the true size and overtones of her voice.
