  • My first experience playing with Derya Turkan was when he was invited as an honoured guest to play on the first Lâmekân ensemble album Gülzar-î Vefâ. I realised immediately what a master he was when I noticed that everybody in the band was playing better and more together due to his presence. What a gift to be able to lift up people and connect them more. And then numerous hours listening to his playing, especially Dokunmak, an album he made together with Erkan Oğur. The space and gentle emotion in his playing, the generosity of his sound, often one note of his is enough to reach my heart.
Although he is one of Turkish classical musics most venerated masters, as well as being a very open minded musician connecting with all kind of amazing musicians throughout the world, it is his joyful humility that makes everything about this man so beautiful.
We played and improvised around a 17th century composition. It's a Peşrev in Kürdi makam composed by Tamburi Angeli, and it's just a gorgeous melody. One take, no rehearsal, what you see is what you get...
I keep repeating that decent headphones or speakers make listening more enjoyable, and it is all the more true in this case. My drums are tuned very low in this one, don't miss out on the bottom end feast.
"Op de koffie" means so much as "visiting for a cup of coffee" in my mother tongue, Dutch. In 2023, I will be inviting fellow musiciens to meet in Studio Galinella, this wonderful place I share with some friends. We have fun together and play some music, connecting through the most beautiful language we have.

I’ve been following and listening Derya over 20 years and he is definitely a virtuoso of the kemençe. I appreciate you to invite him and play together. 👏🏻

I agree, virtuoso for sure, but most importantly, very musical. Thank you, I was so lucky he accepted.

I think it does beautifully. I suppose we have a different opinion about this.
