Camping Along The Great Glen Way | Choosing Joy

- The Great Glen Way travels for 79 miles from Fort William to Inverness along the Great Glen. It passes Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness, as well as the grand Caledonian Canal. It's crammed with historical sites and beautiful forests, and whilst the route may mostly be flat (perfect for anyone new to backpacking), the climbs that do appear offer the most magnificent views as a reward. It is a truly engaging walk, and like always, has a lot to teach the open-hearted walker whether wild camping or staying in other accommodation along the way.

Stay WILD!
Abbie, 48 hours ago I completed the West Highland Way, inspired by you, and now I'm watching this planning my next adventure! Thanks for being you!
An advantage of being a late discoverer of your channel is the hinterland of videos to enjoy. Always inspiring Abbie, thank you.
Haha yes there are a few to work through! Enjoy 🤙
Always happy, always smiling.
It's a sunbath for my soul to watch you!
Love this one.... I need to build up my resilience again after Achilles injury. Feel motivated to do so now 😊
Hope your achilles recovery is going well, it's a runner's curse! I've been recovering from back and knee problems for 18 months, but finally things are coming good... so good to return to the world of the active. I Agree Abbie is wonderfully motivating. Best of luck, Ian
1 hour 40 well spent really enjoyed the video very well put together thanks for sharing.
Bringing back lots of memories. My late grandad was from round that area and talked about the railway. We went up the hills just south of Loch Lochy and saw golden eagles. Nice, especially the wild raspberries.
You are creating wonderful historical documentaries of the landscapes, flora and fauna you walk through. Very enjoyable and thank you.
56:05 - You sound like Henry Thoreau musing in Walden "I was suddenly sensible of such sweet and beneficent society in Nature, in. the very pattering of the drops, and in every sound and sight around my house, an infinite and unaccountable friendliness all at once like an atmosphere sustaining me, as made the fancied advantages of human neighborhood insignificant, and I have never thought of them since. Every little pine needle expanded and swelled with sympathy and befriended me. I was so distinctly made aware of the presence of something kindred to me, even in scenes which we are accustomed to call wild and dreary, and also that the nearest of blood to me and humanest was not a person nor a villager, that I thought no place could ever be strange to me again."
Love it!
My favorite but is "good morning Heather, good morning trees, good morning bracken"
Abbie, this was very inspiring for me, going through a rough time in life and being locked in with the Coronavirus...longing to be free in the wilds of Scotland. I’m going to choose joy, thank you so much! Brian, Loughborough.
I just discovered your channel today while at home ill. I watched your video on the Highland way and the Great Glen way... and you are my new hero. You are articulate, artistic and strong. I aspire to be more like you. I need to start on my health journey and I'm going to incorporate more walking and these video's are inspiration.
I discovered her while I was suck as well. She has been a continual inspiration and encouragement.
You put it very nicely. I wholeheartedly agree!
@@elizabethford7263 Proofreading is necessary to express your exact feelings/thoughts. And I agree with you: Abbie is inspiring & I have shared her with family & friends. Great vibrant Health to you Elizabeth!
Keep smiling Abbie....sunshine or not. You have a beautiful smile! Thank you for sharing this beautiful and uncluttered video.
I thought it was 13mins long when i first put it on to watch, wasn't til I was around 30mins into it that i realised it was 1hour38mins.
Completely captivating, great video as always Abbie and great motivation for my West Highland Way trip tomorrow.
I've come to the conclusion that anyone giving this - or any of Abbie's videos a thumbs down can be summed up in one word... 'envy'. They must yearn to experience her vitality, enthusiasm, magnetism, her determination to overcome mental health issues and, finally, her infectious smile!!
Well not necessarily true
Yeah, no.
She just brings a smile to my face with her joyful heart. God bless youAbbie.
Watching and listening to you Abbie is medicine for the soul. Thank you for all that you do!
Decide you want it more than you are afraid of it. Abbie, that one statement keeps me enjoying the outdoors, thank you
The great glen way is second to your lovely smile, I’m going to travel both walks soon am in Aberdeen and have been thinking about it all year ,, definitely now thanks again 🙏🇬🇧🏴
Love sharing your adventures, thank you so much it has been so great too watch while on lock down thank you Abbie xx 🏴👍🏴👍🏴👍🏴👍
Your enthusiasm makes it so special to watch .. thank you, I am inspired x
It has been a pleasure walking with you on part of your journey. Such beauty is just outside most peoples doors If you want to find it Well done Abbie. One Love to ALL.
So inspiring ~ I’m going to start walking everyday and build up the distance so that by end of you I can do multi day hikes like you do. I love nature but just need to improve my fitness a bit more to fully focus immerse like you do. Well done on inspiring so many to get back outside
It takes ducktape and ...a courageous soul. And a courageous soul you are!
One small addition to the John Cobb story. He was not only famous for his water speed attempt, but his motor speed attempts as well.
One of his old cars is in the Brooklands museum, thirty miles sw of London. In the same place rests an old Wellington bomber that was retrieved in1985 from the bottom of Loch Ness after crashing there during WW2.
fort augustus . lovely chippy deya one side . and the funniest ducks an chip shop owner ever ... literally had t wait t be served while he took care of his regulars quacking at the door .. priceless moments lol .. watching this still wishing i lived at urquart castle lol
I live in wales and under lockdown. your videos are helping me cope with it. I am I my 70s now and your love of life really keeps me sane. god bless you and thankyou
Abbie - you’re a true inspiration! I follow several vloggers, and yours is my absolute favourite. If I’m having a bad day, or can’t sleep, yours is my go-to site! It’s the next best thing to being in the wild! Thank you! x
Thanks for sharing! It has kindled the walking spirit in my self again and this time I'm bringing the family with to Scotland.
Try the Cape Wrath trail. Now that is a real adventure. However your video is grand. Your cheery disposition and enthusiasm is lifting and entertaining. BTW I'm a Scotsman who knows the country very well.
Hard to think of anyone who more perfectly embodies the idea of a bodhisattva. You're wonderful. -- Jason
I like how you always have a beeming smile
It is gets better than wild raspberries if you're lucky - it's wild raspberries, wild blueberries and wild strawberries in one spot, at once. It's brain-melting nice.
Thanks for another fun and beautiful clip Abbie
Some of the views were spectacular, your enthusiasm as always infectious, but what struck me most about this video Abbie is the quiet wisdom you gave us on this one. The choice in every moment to truly open our eyes and to see. To take joy in the beauty to be found everywhere around us. It is far too easy to get caught up in the destination and to lose sight of the pleasure of the journey itself. Great stuff. Stay safe and stay wild :-)
Just subscribed yesterday after '100 miles along the West Highland Way' popped up as a suggestion, and then this appears today - brilliant and thank you! :)
absolutely privileged to be with you.
What a wonderful video.
If that gets just one "new" person out there to put on some hiking boots and get moving, then you've done a great job. Somehow, however, I suspect rather more than just one will be tempted to take the plunge.
Hello Abbie,
from Virginia, next to the Appalachian Trail.
Your Intro in my first of your videos [the West Highland Way] and this one, has inspired me to share just the Intro with family & friends!
Then I continued on "with you" along the Great Glen Way, then@ Meter: 8:46, noticing it is nearly noon, I decided, I better change out of PJs, get dressed, Gear Up & go out to our forest for another explore-adventure.
Carry on Abbie, Happy Trails...
Abbie, you've inspired me to do a through hike and after much deliberation I have decided I'm going to do the Great Glen Way. I am also now watching this video for the 4th time. Thank you for being the amazing person you are.
great watch really enjoyable . really well done some of the best out door walking and talking ive seen on you tube . great out doors adventures
Must be the 3rd time I’ve watched this, thank you, always enjoy and am inspired a new.
Hey Abbie, I really enjoyed the film and glad it was a good experience for you. The UK offers some really unique walking experiences. Thanks for all the work that goes into things like this and for sharing. Cheers from Arkansas.
Well, I came looking for video of the Great Glen Way to understand what was ridable on thin tires as I plan my 3rd John o Groats to Lands End journey (and not on the busy roads this time). After 90 minutes I didn't care anything about the surface and that's because I got lost and mesmerised by the great journey and story telling. Thank you Abbie, what a Journey.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, great travelling with you, wonderful views, keep smiling keep mile Ing.
God bless Regards Roger
Excellent video Abbie.
I thought I was a hardcore hiker but I have nothing on you girl.
Keep making these fantastic videos.
Love em.
Abbie, your videos are as good as any on TV and better than most. So well shot and edited. I’m glad they are often longish like this. Short ones end just as I’m really enjoying them lol. Stay wild, lovely sweet gentle lady.
Your a complete inspiration. Amazing video enjoyed every minute. Thank you

Watched your whole video and loved it . Hope to see you in New Zealand 🇳🇿 soon or if you have already been then I hope you loved it ❤️👍
Abbie I love your videos and I love you too keep up the walks .
Thank you for sharing! I really enjoy your videos!
The landscape north of Fort William, have some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Besides from all the wetness in the West Highlands, which also killed my favorite hiking boots, I seem to remember there is a quite good outdoorshop in Fort William.
Thank you Abbie. Your videos are very well crafted and researched. I love them.
Incredible scenery thanks for showing my country to the world! Inspiring stuff! Subbed
This was a great watch , ive done the whw many times on the bike and not really appreciating whats around me , your knowledge of the flowers and the land and the beaming smile just inspires.
Thankyou
Love your videos and adventures. May is walking month! Keep up the fantastic info, advice and encouragement in getting outside.
Thanks, Abbie, for such a positive and interesting video. Looking forward to the next ones!
From your video, it's clear to see all that can be appreciated along the Great Glen Way. Even for its lack of hills and mountains. A trail that I'm sure many may overlook. Thank you for showcasing it, Abbie and all the best.
Abbie inspirational is the word I had hoped to be planning the West highland way with some ex service friends now due to your inspiring talent this may become a Wife Son and dog memory great drills Abbie be safe😘

Another quality video abbie! You have such enthusiasm and passion for what you do and it really shows in your final product
Loved this, makes me want to go put my hiking shoes on, thank you Abbie 👍🏻
The Great Glen Way was my last hike before the covid pandemic hit. What a privilege, what a beautiful walk. The memories and pictures from my walk helped me to to navigate through those 2 years of pandemic talk. Thank you Abbie for making me re-lived those wonderful memories. Scotland is a very special place. Definitely going back!!
well done for getting to the end,, and what stunning views along the walk :-)
Just started watching your channel love your cheerful smile my wife and I are really enjoying your clips cheers from australia
I am always amazed at your knowledge of the flora and fauna around you and your excellent descriptions of your movement through the countryside.
Nice one Abbie. I walked this myself in January this year, thoroughly enjoyed it. I also thoroughly enjoyed watching this as it brought back some good memories and I liked seeing it from an others perspective. You hit the nail on the head with how it feels at the end of a trail. I always feel happy that I've achieved what I set out to do but also disappointed that the journey has come to an end, but there's always the next one! Thanks for sharing. Atb Shaun
wow - so glad i found your channel :) Glad you have videos this long. Brilliant !

as usual...what a beautiful trip...thanks for taking us along!!
Fabulous. I really enjoyed this and a great lesson for you to share. Thankyou.
A wonderful video, thank you so much Abbie (and well done for completing it). It reminded me of when I walked the route North to South last year, (I think in September) and we had very similar weather; in fact, it may have been the last day where it didn't actually rain! Although I was working in the capacity of an ML/guide, I still really enjoyed the journey, but sadly had to miss out on Day 3 due a to vomiting bug I somehow contracted. I only discovered your brilliant channel today and already I have watched a number of your excellent videos. I am doing a solo C2C at the start of September, and despite not being new to backpacking/trekking, I'm sure there will be plenty of advice here for me. I look forward to more of your great content :)
Your commentary is inspirational. Fantastic stuff, thank you.
Hi Abbie .....always enjoys your trips thanks so much for taking us along and already looking forward to your next one. Take care and good luck with everything you do both in life and on here. Cheers Coops X

Flashbacks to the great glen hostel when I did JoGLe in 2003! Lovely video Abbie!
Beautiful video Miss Barnes, thanks for sharing it with us. I was able to visit Edinburg for four days, but couldn't go see Loch Ness. It's so lovely, and glad you filmed it so nicely so I could get a glimpse!
Just happened upon this by accident. I’m so glad I did, great video, great commentary, thank you for making the effort to share it with us. Great stuff, keep em coming.
