    I have a harbor freight 20t press and I bought a Swag finger brake kit for it to bend some 1/8" plate. It will bend up to 19 inches wide. They do make wider finger brake kits for larger presses but 19" is as wide as the brake will go for the harbor freight 20t press. I am making an electric cart and needed to bend some 1/8" by 18" long plate for a skid plate. It bent it very easy and did a perfect job. I also have installed an air operated 20t jack on the press to make it quicker and easier. You can buy a harbor freight press, air bottle jack and Swag brake kit for under $800.

    NBS welding youtuber has a KAKA brake and he uses an overhead hoist to lift the handle when bending thicker gauge steel. You may need to build an 'A' Frame hoist above the unit so you don't blow out your O-ring.

    Score the bend line with a grinder or possibly make it in two pieces and weld it at 90 if you have the capability. Full width 12 gauge on that would be really pushing it. Also, keep the metal to be bent towards the side and not in the middle. The area with the greatest deflection in the machine is the middle and the sides are more ridgid

    I have the Grizzly model GO542 48” pan and box brake. Just checked the current price and it’s up to $2925. I’ve had mine for a number of years and haven’t been able to break it yet despite my best efforts. This past Saturday I was able to brake 4 pieces of 14 gauge that were slightly over 48” long to over 90 degrees by myself but it took all I had and I was glad there wasn’t a 5th piece. But, I was able to do it and you’re much younger than myself.

    It did not break (pun intended) so it's tough and all is good. No one can change the amount of force needed to bend metal, longer arms would increase operator leverage and make it practical to operate single handed. Nice well built manual brake. Ray

  • @EdLeeper
    @EdLeeper Před 2 měsíci +2

    You're right about it needing more leverage. I couldn't tell from the video, but it did look like there might be a way to slide the part with the hand grips farther out,, or down on the shafts they are connected to. Consider that in order to half the effort you have to double the distance from the axis, so you could make your own handles if you wanted to. Oh yeah. "Machine". ( could always use another hat.

  • @rantiksadventure1920
    @rantiksadventure1920 Před 2 měsíci +3

    That is a nice machine. It seems like it could handle 12GA 40” but if your not going to be bending that size very often you could make an attachment that could sit in the middle at an angle at the bottom for a bottle jack made with two pieces of tube steel one that would fit in the other and have holes drilled out down the sides so you can slide a pin through the tube steels as the bottle jack maxes out and for the top you can make a crossmember out of tube steel with a cutout on one side so it can slip around the handles and be welded in the middle to the outer tube steel with the pin holes drilled in it. Also if you don’t want to be working on your knees 😉 you could buy one of those air powered bottle jacks from harbor freight and run the air line to the top of the break to operate the jack. Just a thought once again great video as always and great editing.

  • @ColinLennard
    @ColinLennard Před 2 měsíci +2

    What you could do is put rollers on the handles then get your fork lift & use that make the bend. Depending on how much you are going to use that bender get a small moter - that could be your best move.
    This is the first time that I have come across you. It is going to be interesting to see how you do.

    • @SpicerDesignsLLC
      @SpicerDesignsLLC  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the suggestion. I might be open to adding some hydraulic cylinders down the road. I will mostly use it for 14ga and i had the radius too tight when i bent the 12ga. Shouldnt have been that hard to bend if the radius wasnt so tight. I will for sure make some detachable cheater handles for it.

  • @moe9098
    @moe9098 Před 2 měsíci +2

    I have a Pexto 48 finger brake. Like most brakes, the manufacturer lists the max gage you can bend, but some explain that to bend the max, you can only do so many inches wide (as you were finding out). I'm guessing that to bend a full 40", it is probably rated to 18 or 20 gauge, with 30" it'd be 16 or so. 12" most likely would be where they rate at the 12 gauge. Pretty similar for most finger brakes. For bending anything like 12 gauge and thicker, I usually use my H Press to bend. Less stress on my old back. Oh, "Machine" as well. Nice hats! I will be getting a Langmuir system soon, just have to make room in my shop somewhere! Love your tutorials. I've learned a lot before I get it!

    Pick up one of the big air-hydraulic rams from harbor freight and fab up a way to mount it on the frame so you can just push a button and watch it bend. With the ram mounted to the base and pushing up on the bending leaf you wouldn’t even need to bolt it to the ground.

    As someone mentioned, if you read the instructions my guess is the information will be there. On the handle that you tightened the nuts to secure that is so it can be adjusted out to allow thicker material to be bent. The thicker the material the more room it needs between the fingers and the brake that you pull up to make the bend. This also adjust the bend radius which you should be doing about 1x thickness for steel. Try it. Might save your back. and yes "Machine"

    1. What model Kioti tractor do you have? I've got a 6620 and I absolutely love it. Much better and more features than the green or other orange tractors.
    2. That brake looks like a nice MACHINE. But one thing you need to know is the max rating on any leaf brake the full width is going to be a handful. I have an old Chicago 8ft 16ga straight (no fingers) brake. To do 6ft of 16ga I have to bounce the two large counter weights during the bend. The extra force of the impact bends the thicker longer pieces.
    3. What I would try since you don't have counter weights is fabricate a handle than slips onto the folding bar with longer handles. Position them at say a 45° angle or so to eliminate the need to bend your back so far. Then maybe you dont need the help of Keystone girl. Might be worth a try since you've already spent the $$.

    I never saw you set the blade offset for your material thickness.
    Each thickness ( gage) of metal will have a different spacing offset between the blade ( top punch) and the bottom (die).
    The top should move back about the metal thickness of the material to be broke( bend).
    Good luck and have fun with your new toy

    I have a “content” idea that you might like. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Gingery series of books but it’s a series about home made machine shop tools. These books primarily focus on home shop metal casting but that isn’t really an option for me and my shop. I’ve been wondering if it wouldn’t be more practical in this day and age to fabricate these tools using CNC Plasma cut plates and welding. I don’t know if a project or two from those books would interest you or be a good fit the channel but I’m curious. I’ve been imagining a fabricated metal shaper primarily since all of them seem to have been picked clean in my part of the country.
