    Collecting fountain pens is like falling down a rabbit hole which has no end. I now have over 300+ in my
    small collection, however, I am aware of some folks who own well over 1,000+++ in their collection. To
    encourage those who do not have deep money pockets, or parents who just love giving you money,
    you can still find pens for your budget that you will enjoy writing with!

    • @adventuredenali

      Yes! It is indeed quite the rabbit hole with no end! They’re all so unique, each and everyone of them. And to experience each and everyone of them is a dream for the collector. Hard not to dive down that rabbit hole...

    Your saying that you are reluctant to use your vintage pens because you fear "wearing them out" reminds me of a joke: A farmer went to his son and told him to hitch up the old mule and begin plowing the north forty. The son replied, "Why not hitch up the new mule, Pa?" "Becuz, son, my motto is: 'Always use up the old things first.'" To which the son responded, "Then YOU should go hook up the old mule, Pa."

    I had always wished to see your current collection of pens. Wish granted today. I had guessed you had some splendid previously unseen beauties in your possession. This brief overview confirms that you have a cool collection indeed.
    I realise I have many things in common with you regarding pens and preferences. I found a few more in this video. Like you, I also love and savor my vintage pens to the extent that I’m somewhat wary of using many of them too much for exactly the same reasons you cited here. Again, like you, I’m also not really a ‘collector’ or even hoarder of pens just for the sake of possessing them. I like and want to use all my pens. I dislike the idea of having many pens lying around unused and existing as ‘trophies’ of a sort. I have too many pens inked at once. I just can’t ditch that habit. I’ve resolved not to buy another pen next year unless it’s something stand-out special I really must own. My bucket list has a few items, not least the Sheaffer PFM and the Waterman Edson, the right ones at the right price.
    I love my Sailors (mine are mostly the PGs) but I don’t have as many Sailor pens as you do. That position is occupied by Aurora (24 of my 80 pen collection).
    And oh, I forgot to say that cursive italics are my newest love. I’ve gotten into CI nibs sometime last year. It suits my writing to the tee. I love writing with them. I want more and now wish I had managed to get a few more of my pens with CI nibs.

    YAY! So happy to see this I’ve been looking out for an update on your collection so thank you for taking the time to do this. I love the way you talk about the experience of writing with various fountain pens, they’re so much more than simple writing tools and more of an extension of ones being especially when penning one’s musings down. The little details you like about each one of them are interesting to learn about, and I feel similarly about my own collection. So happy to find your channel! I’m also excited about the vintage Japanese pen video you mentioned. I also like watching you write coz your handwriting is so beautiful so could be fun to have some writing samples dotted in there too if possible ? As someone who has relatively recently caught the fountain pen bug, your collection is both awe-inspiring and stresses me out a bit! I've bought a bunch of pens and tons of (too many) inks over the last few months, and get a bit anxious at the idea of owning dozens upon dozens of pens. Already, with about a dozen pens in the roost, I feel like I have enough variation, and need to get to know each pen before expanding further. I mean, the Pelikan 400 alone has such subtlety and grace to it, than I can envision a reality in which that's the only pen I owned (OK, but the Lamy 2000...and the Kaweco Brass Sport...and the Parker Vacumatic Shadow Wave...and....).
    Anyhow, I look forward to an update to your fountain pen collection. I noticed you're mostly writing with a multi-pen...would love to hear why. Fountain burn-out? Convenience? Novelty?

    I'm sure you know that Pelikan nibs will screw in and out. On initial cleaning of a Pelikan pen, I run the piston all the way to the back of the ink chamber and use a cotton swab with silicon grease to coat the inside of the barrel. That insures a good ink seal, and lubricates the piston seal so that it doesn't stick in the barrel.
    Pen Model: Pelikan nibs it will accept
    M101N: M2xx, M4xx, M6xx, M7xx Toledo, M70xx Majesty, “1931” and “1935” LEs
    M1xx: M100, MC120, M150, M101N, M2xx, M4xx, M6xx, M7xx Toledo, M70xx Majesty, “1931” and “1935” LEs
    M2xx: M101N, M2xx, M4xx, M6xx, M7xx Toledo, M70xx Majesty, “1931” and “1935” LEs

    I like that Kaweco brass with the bronze clip. I need to get a bronze clip for my copper Lilliput. Bought a bulb converter for it, lost that, and finally bought another, but haven’t tried it yet. Been lucky so far, I like how they feel, but when you read reviews they can be hit or miss. I want to get a Pelikan m800/805 someday (blue or green), but for now, I am priced out from getting one. Maybe if I get a bonus again someday.

    I just love those Pro Gears....but I’m not ready to hand over $180 for a pen. My biggest question is, though I’m sure it is much nicer and more elegant to write with the finer pens, with their gold nibs....is there really that big of a difference in the nib performance from the pricey pens to, say, the pens in the $50 to $100 range....or are you just paying for the tactile experience of holding a more luxuriously cased pen in your hand? I do love and appreciate the finer things in life...but I really just want a pen that performs well right now, without having to spend too much. If you had to choose one pen, $60 to $80-ish, which do you think would be the best one in that price range?

    • @adventuredenali
      @adventuredenali  Před 3 lety +1

      That’s a really great question, and also a really difficult one to answer! I used to think it made more of a difference. But there’s so many companies now producing high quality pens for a much less price. It often comes down to the nib material, gold nibs being something only found in the $100+ range. There was a time when piston/vacuum fillers cost a pretty penny - but now companies like TWSBI make an excellent filling system for under $100. Steel nibs can be just as good as gold, and sometimes gold nibs are tuned terribly and are no good! I’d like to think that quality of materials, and well tuned nibs are what you pay for. But, one of the reasons why I always say I have a love/hate relationship with Sailor is that the material they’re made from doesn’t last. All my older sailors are cracked. And their cartridge converters leave something to be desired. And, I’ve experienced inconsistencies with the nibs. I have an extra fine nib by sailor that is extraordinary and puts down the juiciest of lines. But I have a fine that is very dry, and unpleasant to write with. And yet still, I buy them. The pretty colors are difficult to resist. My Pelikans feel very much a high quality, luxury meets tank, pen. I feel confident they’ll last me my whole life. As for the vintages - price is much more dependent on condition or rarity, as it’s more about the collector’s value. So, in a nut shell, yes and no. Sometimes the differences are subtle, some more obvious.

    • @adventuredenali
      @adventuredenali  Před 3 lety

      I like the TSWBI diamond mini, it’s about $50. A really well built pen, can be purchased in a piston or vac filler. I personally love the vac filler. Great carrying capacity and has a nice weight. Twsbi nibs in my experience have been very consistent and well tuned.

    • @adventuredenali
      @adventuredenali  Před 3 lety

      If it’s a gold nib you’re wanting, I think you have to break the $100 threshold. That could have changed of course.

    • @geslinam9703
      @geslinam9703 Před 3 lety

      @@adventuredenali I’ve been considering the Twsbi Diamond. I’ve read good things about it, and it’s prettier than the Eco. So many choices out there, it’s overwhelming. I finally narrow it down to a brand and then spend days trying to decide on nib size....it would be nice if there were fountain pen stores where one could go and try out pens in person. In the future, I might splurge on a gold nib, but not just yet. Thanks so much for your reply, hope you have a wonderful holiday!

    • @adventuredenali

      @@geslinam9703 it is so overwhelming! There are shops that you can go into and try, but they’re few and far between. We used to have one here in Tucson, and I’ve been to one in California and New York. It’s really helpful. Otherwise, you just have to take a leap of faith. You can order other nib sizes for the TWSBI pens, so you could always get a second size and play around with it.
