The inside gatefold of 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' is for me the most interesting inside gatefold ever, with all the lyrics, plus Jon Anderson's story about the conception of the album, and all those photographs framed by Roger Dean shapes. Those pictures are like evocations of the world described in the music. That album is a total work of Art!

fun fact about 70s prog and naked man butts: If we count the inner gatefold artwork, it actually goes back even further than going for the one, to the starman logo on 2112 in 1976. Still have no clue what the deal is with the butts but I think that question is beyond human understanding...

You're absolutely right about _Relayer,_ Scot. Since I first purchased it, some 40+ years ago, I thought this was the one where the artwork and the music were in total synchronicity. It was then I began to wonder which came first with Yes albums, Roger's fantastic artwork or the band's fantastic music. @@TheProgCornerThe Tales cover has some interesting mirror items hidden in that painting. The left to right mirror sweep has the sun becoming a heart. Heart of the sunrise? Also, the "ocean maid" in And You And I is across the whole star field in the sky on both front and back. When you start the top to bottom mirror sweep, you see her in "the magic constellation" in Hearts closing 90125. She fills the Topographic sky naked, wearing a kings crown, which belongs to the Relayer. Can you guess how that image relates to the cover for Going For The One? "Because the sky is blue, it makes me cry. Because the sky is blue." The night sky is black when you see the stars. Not blue like the Topographic painting. The rocks on the back cover of the Relayer painting lines up with the rocks on the right edge of the front of the Topographic painting. Logically, a concept album titled Relayer follows Topographic Oceans as does the artwork. Tales is the sixth and longest studio album in all the Yes catalog. I Want You (She's So Heavy) is the sixth track and the longest song on Abbey Road. Then Here Comes The Sun follows Tales, as Relayer. "The sun will lead us. Our reason to be here." And that is followed by the 8th track Because. Why? The sky is blue, and the dude is naked in the city on the 8th studio album. There are crazy mirror sweeps on that cover too.

Have to agree that Relayer is number 1 and Yessongs is very much up there but, as others have said, CttE is wonderful in its simplicity and should be higher. With Fragile I always think to myself that it's against all the laws of planetary formation. Nice image but where's the science?! The 'bubble' logo always elevates any sleeve that it's on.

I think I do agree on your top choice, but that inside cover on Yessongs with that arriving airship and the girl on that cliff...that is my favourite Roger Dean artwork. I always wanted to be 17 again and sit there right beside her. Or maybe take her for a nice walk into the landscape of "Close to the Edge" and then we could row out to that little island and stay in that temple or whatever it is.
"Classic Yes" is one of my favourites as well. Hard to pick a third out of so many great covers, but "Fragile" is special.
Worst cover? "Big Generator" and "Tormato". The latter is just not right for Yes (same thing about "Going For The One") and the first is just plain terrible. At best suitable for a Kraftwerk bootleg or something.

@@TheProgCornerHi Scot, I am moved to point something absolutely AMAZING about the Tormato back cover. The only full names embroidered on their jackets are Jon and Alan. Because of folds in the other 3 jackets, you only see Ri on Ricks jacket, St on Steve's jacket, and CHS on Chris' jacket. Those 7 letters spells Christ's.
Also, in 2003, I took a mirror to that back cover picture, running it up and down, and side to side. I find a shield, a helmet, and a sword. Sounds familiar from my Sunday School days in the early '70s. I grab my dad's Thompson chain Bible to look for where those items are in one place. They're in the middle of Ephesians chapter 6, and I have an itemized list of everything hidden in that picture. It took 4 hours to find the "whole armor of God." My favorite is "the shield of faith, which quencheth the fiery darts from the devil." You get the shield when you slap the mirror on the bottom edge. On the record cover, you slide the mirror in to the Atlantic record logo so that it looks like a pair of eyes on a face with horns all around it. A couple tomato seeds line up on the mirror and they look like darts on fire from the devil headed towards Steve, who is behind "the shield of faith."

BUT the 2 "extra" songs (the live ones) really belongs on "YesShows" - and if im not mistaken Chris Squire were involved in both those around 1980-1981, My guess is they couldnt fit more into that one, and just made a "bonus" 7" (but for the wrong album...)

Yes is the greatest band ever and the fact that every list I see is totally different is yet another thing I love about them!!! Thank you!!

Me neither. Genesis comes close but Yes has been my favorite band since I first heard Roundabout back in 1975. I was 13 and it was game over. Yes music just speaks to me…

@@TheProgCorner I'm going to have to try more Genesis. It's a band that I'm not too familiar with. I've tried a few albums but I'm just not connecting with it like I do with Yes.

One day perhaps they will “click” with you!!! They will always be my two favorite bands - with Yes in the lead by a comfortable margin!!! 👍

    Again well done Sir.
Always thought the movie Avatar was a ripoff of Roger Dean's artwork. Shame the courts favored Cameron.
BTW, How about "The Steve Howe Album" as an honorable mention? The album that made me quit guitar. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I love it and, oddly enough, Beginnings as well.

But most of the low 20 are bad 😞😊

Ha ha, "Time And A Word" album cover should have said "not featuring Steve Howe". 😄 "Open Your Eyes" should have been called "Close Your Eyes Quickly". Some of the best and some of the worst album covers. Magnification might be a nice album cover but certainly not on CD.

    • @TheProgCorner
      @TheProgCorner  Před rokem +2

Magnification was a missed opportunity, but the history of YES is filled with those!!!
