It's always interesting for me to do these kind of videos, comparing the individual parts of the original song and what Geoff has done with it.
Not to see who did it better, but to dive a little deeper into Geoff's creative mind. What he did similar, what he did different, what he removed, what he added, what he switched around.
Us patrons sometimes get a deep dive into the arrangement of some of Geoff's songs, where Geoff spends about an hour on a live stream with us answering our questions and showing us all the tiny little details in the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation, an audio production software or platform designed for the recording, editing, mixing, and mastering of digital audio files), and talking about his thought process behind his decisions and additions. SUPER fascinating! But even with that insight, doing these comparison videos gives another layer of understanding into Geoff's creative mind.
Hope you enjoy them as well!

I'm getting teary. I adore Jim Croce and was heartbroken when he died. I wore out a thick songbook playing his songs. I'm so grateful Geoff helped revive his legacy and give this work new life. Thanks, Huldra, for this wonderful and moving trip down memory lane for me.
Glad you enjoyed it❤️
I love how Geoff brings life to old songs that younger generations may never have found otherwise.
Wow! What a DIfference it makes, when the RIGHT man does the Job! This song has waited long enough and deserves a bit of Geoff Castellucci and his Boys
I have loved Jim Croce forever, and all I can say is Geoff's version was phenomenal! He showcased his own artistry and yet showed honor and respect to a truly gifted performer. Absolutely slayed this! Thank you, Huldra for creating this 💛
Geoff's full, round, warm timbre is so perfect for the song! More advanced studio production helps a lot, too tbf.
I’ve always enjoyed the way Geoff interprets and covers a bit of music he really does do something fresh with them ❤
I love Geoff 💕❤️💕
I loved Jim Croce when I was growing up and I was one of those annoying people that kept asking Geoff to do a cover of this song. I was soooo excited when he did and of course he did the amazing job that I expected he would. I love both versions of this but Geoff's is definitely my favorite. I'd love to have him cover Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle". That was my favorite of his songs. I can only imagine how many more wonderful songs the world would have if Jim Croce hadn't died so tragically young. Thank you Huldra for this wonder comparison!
I've often thought that same thing - Jim Croce's death was a terrible loss❤️
Yes, Time in a Bottle has the most beautiful lyrics.
Es ist nicht schwer, den Besten rauszufinden: es ist natürlich Geoff. ❤️❤️ Dir, liebe Huldra, herzlichen Dank!😊
Geoff, hands down
Nah, his hands were all over the place in this one.

Thanks to Jim Croce for writing it, but Geoff's take on it is gigantically better! Geoff definitely put the fight feeling into it.
Geoff's the best❣
RIP Jim Croce ... thanks for this and all the other great tunes you wrote and shared with us. Did you think they'd be covered 52 years later? Geoff did a great cover imho.
Geoff did a wonderful job. His version of the song fits the story of the song perfectly. BUT: Jim Croce's version with his voice is just as perfect for his time. 🫶🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
Everything Old is New Again...No Disrespect to the original but Geoff's version is Stellar!!!🌟 He has a gift for both Honoring the original artist And spinning everything slightly to make the lyrics more Powerful and Clearly Understood. I loved Jim Croce's music and the whole world felt his loss when he died but I love this version equally. Thank you! ❤️🤟
If I had heard this song performed by Jim Croce first, it would not have attracted my attention. There is nothing unusual in this song and the singer's voice is not very good. But Geoff, with his arrangement and performance, took this song to a higher level. And this is not the first time this has happened.
Thanks so much for doing these side by sides. I appreciate being able to hear the differences so clearly. I'm glad you show us so many sides of our boys!
I have to say I like Geoff's version better. (Don't we all?) The verse where Jim loses the fight has a lot more impact. In the original it's more like "Jim lost. Oh well." In Geoff's version you can almost see the witnesses staring in disbelief.
Geoff did say on his Patreon that Jim's version was too "boppy". He wanted to make it more of a fighting song.
Wow! Great comparison, thanks Huldra 😊
Happy Birthday to ME!!!🎉 I was raised on a Jim Croce…then along comes this man who elevated this song to the MILLIONTH degree!!!! Everything Geoff does just takes songs to a WHOLE NUTHER LEVEL!!!🙌🏻🥰🙌🏻🥰🙌🏻❤️ AND introduces old songs to the younger crowd and makes them new ALL over again!! Thanks for the comparison, Huldra!!! Again, it just shows Geoff’s brilliance in arranging songs and putting his “touch” to them!! How lucky are WE!?!?!?🥰
Trop fort notre Geoff, il t'emmène où il veut avec sa voix, son style et ses arrangements. Et oui, encore une fois, je préfère sa version 😮🤗😍💪
This comparison reminds me of the differences between Bill Withers and Geoff in Ain't No Sunshine.
Props to the original artist, but Geoff is better both times. He gives a more somber note to Sunshine and menace to Jim.
He does give menace to Jim. But there is another perspective. Croce presented it as an amused observer watching the big guy get taken down. There was a lot of humor and relish when he performed it that showed what he thought of the big guy, and a certain pleasure at seeing him knocked off his throne by a guy named - of all things - "Slim." (Given that Croce wrote the song, I don't believe the names are an accident.) Unfortunately you don't get his expressions here, you'll have to watch a live recording to see his take.
Big difference in the two. Both are really good but Geoff's is much better.
Geoff-это голос,полифония,постановка номера.Оригинал...простая песня,просто спетая.Я слышала оригинал.И прошла мимо.А Geoff...много раз его исполнение звучит у меня в голове😘
Geoff 's version is more better❤
The style difference in era & in recording equipment is so obvious! I loved Jim Croce - and his sly-joke way of putting his lyrics across - all of which is lost here without being able to see his facial expressions. And of course, his style owes a lot to folk, a more straightforward approach to songs. Love Geoff, and love his updated version with the fuller sound and modern ways of driving the beat - but I'm sad that Croce isn't given his due here. Keep in mind - Croce wasn't singing someone else's material - he wrote this. And he wrote Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and many others. Pity he died before he could fully come into his own. (plane crash, not drugs.)
Absolutely liked Jim's original as well! There will always be a difference in audio quality from back then to what they have nowadays. And I do these mainly to see which choices Geoff made in his arrangement compared to the original. Both songs are awesome ❤️
Geoff gave Full Credit and Honor to Jim Croce in the description. I loved Jim's music too and was skeptical that Anyone could sing a version that would compare, but in my opinion, Geoff did it Beautifully Again!❤
@@DSJ-gg2ns Geoff always gives full credit, and that's one of many reasons we love and support him. When I said "here," I meant HERE. This comparison. Croce didn't make Jim menacing, he showed him for a fool. There's a long tradition of poking fun at powerful bullies who have fallen, and Croce's version clearly fits that category. There are a number of live versions of Croce singing his song that makes this clear, and I wish one had been used here. Croce's song was about over-reach and folly leading to a fall. Geoff chose to make it a fight song instead: that's valid, and he performed his interpretation beautifully.
Before anyone jumps down my throat defending Hulda, I'm not attacking her, either. My comment was a critique, which is the whole point of the reaction genre. Hulda does great work. Having seen some of her others, I think this isn't her best work: she's done more insightful videos.
Interestingly, there was a new animated video of Jim's original released recently and the audio quality is sooo much better.
Geoff provided a wonderful take on the original.
In all the times I'd heard the original, it wasn't until Geoff's version that I realized Jim lost the fight to Slim.
And all these whippersnapper reactors who've never heard the song need to get off my lawn. Not that they're making me feel old... 😉
lol! 😄
I've never heard it either, despite being old. Though I have the excuse of not being American, I think only 2 or 3 of his songs ever made it to our radios here.
Geoff's diction is outstanding. Even with English being my 2nd language (and trespassing on your lawn 😉), I never have any problems understanding every word of the lyrics, even with all the intricate harmonies.
@huldradraco same goes for me
I'm a songwriter and singer myself, and I'm more than a bit anal retentive when it comes to good diction. Geoff's diction is superb (even though he does have an accent, the lyrics are clear).
Ok, Jim Croce brought this great song into being. But I have to say Geoff has improved on it and brought it WAY up to a whole new incredible level! (And could I please have one of the backup singers? Maybe the one on the far left? There’s still four left…they wouldn’t miss him! Okay?)
An excellent show of respect to the original. But it's much better "Castellucci'ed".😂❤❤❤
Good comparison 👏 👍 👌 🙌 😀 💪
Thanks! 👍
I LOVE Mr. Castellucci's voice, but he mumbles more than the original does. I think both are good.
Geoff's cover is better. ❤
