I can't believe you've never seen this before!!
One thing I love in this special is how when Linus gets to the middle of the Christmas story when Linus talks about the angel's words, he lets go of his blanket... and is not holding his blanket for the whole rest of the tale. It's a small detail, but a really clever one.
I never paid attention to that. Wow
Fun fact: Fake Christmas trees were gaining in popularity in the early 1960s, and Charles Schultz hated them. He wrote this script partly in protest of them, and the public picked up on it...to the point that demand for metal, artificial Christmas "trees" dropped at once and never recovered.
This was the Godfather of all animated Christmas specials.
Actually, that was Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, which came out three years before and helped motivate the creation of the Charlie Brown one.
BTW, if you’ve never seen that one, it is well worth it!
With razzleberry dressing
Ok but it ties with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!
"Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?"
"Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights, please..."
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." - Luke 2 : 8-14 (KJV)
"That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown."
Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁
Fun Fact: First animated Peanuts special.
Flock By Night Fact: Snoopy's (Bill Melendez) dog house is blue in this special, but in subsequent specials it is red.
Tidings Of Great Joy Fact: Idiotic, tone deaf CBS executives greeted Vince Guaraldi's jazz score as an intrusion in the special that audiences would never accept.
Born This Day Fact: Cathy Steinberg, who did the voice of Sally Brown, had not yet learned to read at the time of production, so she had to be fed her lines, often a word or syllable at a time, which explains the rather choppy delivery. The unique delivery is actually endearing.
Fear Not Fact: Bill Melendez tried to talk Charles M. Schulz out of using Biblical references (especially Linus's speech) in this special. Schulz reportedly won him over. As it turned out, Linus' (Christopher Shea) recitation was hailed as one of the most powerful moments in the highly acclaimed special. In the comic strip, one of the recurring early themes was Linus' fear of reciting his Biblical passage in the Christmas pageant.
Heavenly Host Fact: Apple TV+ bought the rights to the Peanuts specials in 2020, and therefore 2020 was supposed to be the first year since A Charlie Brown Christmas premiered that it would not air on free television. However, after an outcry from the public for removing the programs from free television, the specials (beginning with A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and later this special) were offered to public television stations in November and December 2020, sponsored by Apple.
How long did it take you to write this comment?
A lot of kids got a sly introduction to Jazz through the Vince Guaraldi Trio's soundtrack on Charlie Brown Holiday Specials.
This first aired the year I was born. I've literally seen every Christmas for my entire life. To this day, I never miss watching it.
Merry Christmas, Rob and Vanessa! It’s awesome that you get to see this for the first time. I love watching this special any time of year. Christmas Time Is Here is a song that makes me think of snow falling. The scene where Linus quotes the Bible hit me on a level I didn’t even register when I was younger. I think it’s amazing that this special was initially dismissed and the producers thought it would air once and never been seen again. That is so funny to think about now.
Merry Christmas to you, Alex!💜💙
**dancing like the kids onstage**
You guys are magic. Excellent couple & when you both are speechless with laughter, it’s fantastic. Great opening! Thank you for sharing.
Children are smart, receptive and learn, even if it’s not immediately noticeable. Fred Rogers knew this. He and the Peanuts were a big part in the life of this Child of the 1960s.
Happy Holidays & all the best for 2024.
Love this classic. My favorite scene is when Linus explains what Christmas is all about.
Which is eye-rolled by the reaction.
@@sashmiel6566That was unfortunate.
My favorite scene too 😊
Me too. Some people want to gloss over the REAL reason we celebrate Christmas. This cartoon talked to kids like people and not like idiots. Kids are smarter than people think.
@@josephwilliams9209 they definitely are
Can you imagine; the most potent moment was Linus speaking about someone who scarificed Himself for humanity; the true meaning of Christmas was given a eye-roll by the reactors; how far has society has fallen. They will be literally late for the party.
Yeah, they were being aholes. Organized religion may be dying but so is smug atheism. Schulz made sure that passage was in it, it was the whole point.
The soundtrack to this is THE greatest Christmas music ever created. Fight me.
Born in 1962 and it doesn't really feel like Christmas until I hear that music from Vince Guaraldi
All the Peanuts cartoons makes me cry especially the movies.
growing up in the 1970's, I really identified with Charlie Brown and felt the same way he did, and I perceived that everyone treated me the same way he was treated. but as it turned out, a few years ago I was finally diagnosed with PTSD, which also brought up acute depression and acute anxiety, and that I have been suffering from it all my life, since I was a toddler in the late 1960's!
This was the very first-ever full-length Peanuts cartoon.
Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz was a practicing Lutheran.
Including the real meaning behind (the name) Christmas in prime time on CBS was still a gamble that it might be too religious.
It was also very unusual at the time to use child actors in animation and not to use a laugh track.
CBS showed this special every year from 1965 through 2000, when ABC acquired the rights. AppleTV+ bought them in 2020.
Miss Chiodo was my student teacher in junior high.
Merry Christmas!! 🎄❤😊
The Peanuts were really not a happy go lucky kids thing. As a very dark humored, sarcastic kid, the Peanuts spoke to me and has my entire life. To this day they are a part of my life. My gift this year for my husband is a Peanuts themed gift. My first watch was back in the 70’s on tv. It came on every year, much like It’s the Great Pumpkin,Charlie Brown!✌🏻👩🏻🦰👍🏻
10/10
Perfection...and as important as egg nog and mistletoe for the holidays
This might just be the best kid's Christmas special ever. RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER and HOW THE GRINCH STOLE Christmas are very, very close but I think I'd give this film the nod for two major reasons. First, the music by Vince Guaraldi is amazing--and one of the best sound tracks ever. Second, Charles Shultz insisted that this Christmas special actually talk about the REAL meaning of Christmas--with a reading from Luke of the Christmas story. Oddly, studio executives were apparently worried this might offend people! Imagine the gall of mentioning Jesus in a Christmas story!! This special is also amazing because it was the first Charlie Brown cartoon and subsequent films using the characters never quite matched this first great film and its success led to these other Peanuts films.
If you can find it, you should watch the animated SNL parody of this.
This is a family favorite of ours. We usually have a first watch after Thanksgiving, then watch again closer to Christmas.
A few years ago when my son was taking skating lessons, I was sitting in the stands watching all the kids on the rink skating. They were broken up into several groups based on age and experience. I put on my headphones and dialed up Vince Guaraldi's "Skating" from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special...and the combination of the music and all the happy kids skating literally made me cry. czcams.com/video/Kn4Y3sHyfsg/video.htmlsi=PMaEnfrV4Ru0JG9P
Sounds magical. ❄️⛄️⛸️
Charlie Brown was really an educational experience for me. I am 60 and grew up while Schultz was still writing it. It was important to me. Also, it this special, you should pay more attention to the music. Vince Guaraldi did the music but the crew were late putting it all together. I believe they had a test copy for the CBS executives a day or two before it was to air. The execs were freaked out and said the score was terrible but it was too late to do anything about it. The show aired and everyone loved the music.
Odd how this is the first time you both are watching this. I remember watching it every year when it aired on CBS. It was awesome 😎. Merry Christmas to you both.
Merry Christmas, Rob and Vanessa!
Merry Christmas to you as well! 💜💙
Oh man, pray the Peanuts doesn't go into public domain, otherwise, we could see Charlie Brown go fully psychotic; just like they did to Winnie the Pooh. 😄😄 But yeah, man, A Charlie Brown Christmas was a annual staple around my house for many years, until Disney sold it and the other specials to Apple.
It will in 2060. I will be 96 then.
I can just see him going after all those people who gave him rocks that Halloween.
We watched it each Christmas on TV as a tradition ❤
I suspect one or both of you do a secret snoopy dance when nobody's around, if the music ever came on!
Merry Christmas
Everybody!
Aluminum Christmas Trees were popular in the 50's and 60's but Charles M Schultz found them rather tasteless, hence why he mocks them in the special. After this special was broadcast and became popular, aluminum Christmas tree lost their popularity and people rather wanted to have real trees at home.
The greatest soundtrack ever
Charlie Brown has seasonal depression every season. But he always does his best.
7:11 - the only time Lucy (or any of them?) actually had five fingers?
Charles Schultz was manic-depressive, so the character of Charlie Brown reflected an aspect of the cartoonist's personality. And Schultz did become very religious as a means to cope.
Merry Christmas you 2 kooks. Keep up the good work
Merry Christmas to you both! 🎄❤️❤️ a classic Christmas show!!!
Merry Christmas to you too! 💜💙
Merry Christmas Vanessa and Rob, awesome reaction!
Merry Christmas to you too, Big Llama! 💜💙
Sally Brown: "I only want what's coming to me."
That line, along with that delivery, has absolutely destroyed me since I was a wee kid, oh so many years ago. Funniest line in any Peanuts special/movie ever!🤣
Oh snap almost forgot! Thanks for reacting to another Peanuts special LttP and Happy Holidays!😄
Bon voyage Charlie Brown is also a classic.
Pastor here. I enjoy all your reactions. Totally get your take here. The religiosity isn't for everyone but there is still a lot for people to enjoy. Keep it up.
Wonderful point of view. Nice to say that, if you don’t mind me saying so.
Merry Christmas guys
Merry Christmas to you too! 💜💙
LATE COMMENT: Charlie Brown is my patron saint. I can complete empathize with him in so many ways. Always loved 'Peanuts' and have comic books of them. The best part of this is they include the REAL meaning of Christmas.
I saw this when it first aired. I was 6 and don't remember much. I watched it every year after while growing up and looked forward to it. Named my second dog Snoopy.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays ya filthy animals :D
💜💙 Right back at ya!
When this first came out, the studio execs were shitting bricks over the special, believing it was the worst thing they'd ever greenlit. A great irony of the special is that the original airing included a LARGE amount of advertising for Coca-Cola added into the animation throughout, in the bumpers and during the end credits/song.
Merry Christmas guys!
I have little memory watching it on ABC when i was a kid but i rewatched it and i loved it ^^ it is such a Christmas Classic and i love Peanuts. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays Everyone 😃🎄
I saw this when I was 1 in 1965. It moved to ABC in 2001.
Loved the Thanksgiving one with you. Thanks for doing this one. Ya know there are also Valentine's Easter New Years of these too right? 😉
to almost everyone, christmas was about santa claus, decorating trees, and eating.. and giving each other presents and cheery greetings.. giving to the charity santas blocking store entrances.. and getting your pic with santa.. everyone had little nativity scenes on their mantles that were church goers, and if you went to church, the preacher would talk about the birth of jesus and such obviously.. this went on for many decades, pretty much the same.. and then there was a bunch of church people that started telling each other that jesus was being forgotten on christmas, and it became a little trend to start shoving jesus to everyone that wasnt putting a spotlight on him.. so this went on a while, bugging all.. until some other group of athiest twits, started pushing back the other direction.. making it their mission to stop all mention of jesus in public around christmas.. so you know.. typical dork stuff
😊holiday classic I watch it now on bootlegged websites since cbs and abc stopped rerunning it
Out family tree is full of ornaments from mine and my husband's childhoods going all the way back to 1977 and more we accumulated over the years by either our own hands or friends and family as gifts. I grew up watching this as a kid! Happy Holidays to you both! 🎄🎁🎅🎁🤶🎊
Hay late to the party when you watch what if season 2 episode 4 there's a post credits scene
Best Christmas movie
Lol Merry Christmas guys .miss V ❤
Merry Christmas to you as well, Todd! 💜💙

Merry Christmas! wow cant believe you've never watched this before? is it more of a Gen X thing? I watch this and the other Peanut specials yearly. Love me some Snoopy! that burp though. only thing worse than the kids laughin at Charlie Brown, his own dog booed him. Charlie Brown needs to set some boundaries with his so called friends, they are low key abusive.
Generation Jones thing. Young Boomers and late Xers.
If you do another Christmas special, and if you haven’t seen it, please consider the Garfield Christmas special. It’s fantastic.
Great watch ! This cartoon shows the true meaning of Christmas. The Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas from the UK!
You guys need to see the Scrubs version that was recorded for their Christmas party…

Do you guys always laugh this much or are you high? LOL, just kidding.
Both.
Clearly people need to learn more about what Christmas is all about.
Wow, what cynics. I am an atheist and I know Linus’ speech by heart. It’s from watching this special every year since I was a kid.By the way, you probably don’t know who Dr. Demento was, but Rob sounds like him
Dr. Barry Hansen is still with us.
@@curtismartin2866 Thanks for the correction
You guys are too jaded.
"Religual"?? That's not a word.
religual: adj. of or pertaining to sentiment or habit that is left over after belief in or worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially of a personal God or gods.
@LatetotheParty How interesting. I tried looking it up before saying anything because I have never heard that word in my life. But every time I said religual or typed it, it always came back with the word "religion." Several times. So I came to the only conclusion that one would come to, that it wasn't a word. So anyway, this is great, I always love learning anything new. Cheers!
I do appreciate that you two put yourselves out there for your videos, truly as I often enjoy your reactions. That said I have to admit that this reaction left a bad taste in my mouth. While it was likely an unintended cut for the video’s length, you left out the very beginning and end of Linus’ recitation of Luke 2. The reading says “fear not” and “on Earth peace and good will toward men”, even if you ignore the entire story those two phrases would mean so much to Charlie Brown in this very story. As all through the special every instance of good will that people would do would be for selfish reasons; and chances for spontaneous love and generosity (such as giving Charlie Brown a Christmas card) were outright ignored. Throughout the whole special the one person that was by his side was Linus, so it would make sense that Charlie wouldn’t just listen to what his friend had to say but believe what he said. Linus while in the spotlight expressed a great deal of humility in his recitation, because he could have given advice that was his own that said the same thing. Advice that SO many people can say because it’s become commercialized and put in the mouths of Santa and whoever else. Linus gave him the source where that phrase came from. A story (that a person can believe or not) that was thousands of years old, and has persisted to the present saying the same. That always gave me hope during my hard times during the holidays. It meant that someone, somewhere a long time ago may have felt how I feel about the world. How can there be good in a selfish world? And they found a way to keep going in hope, and passed that hope on to others and to me and Charlie Brown. So having cut out those bits was a bit odd to me, but maybe you guys didn’t see it that way. The salt was making fun of Linus and his faith, even though it was all he had in an attempt to help his friend.
And perhaps there’s the added sting that I wonder, would you say if any other faith was expressed in a show? I don’t see that you’ve reacted to “The Prince of Egypt” or “The Ten Commandments”, both of which are special to me as a Catholic but also are special to those of Jewish faith as they imply in the former and explicitly explain in the latter (even to a small degree like Linus’ recitation here) about Passover. It wasn’t just a ritual to remember the last day of the bondage of God’s people in Egypt, but a moment to glorify God for their salvation from that bondage. Would you ask then if the sermon was over? I wouldn’t want to, even if I don’t believe in what someone else does. As the meaning of Christmas is still to me “on Earth peace and good will to men”, and I want to keep that all my life. And part of that love is being honest with our fellow man too; that the mocking came off as mean-spirited and hypocritical being targeted towards Christianity. And that doesn’t feel like much good will at all to me.
Well, I said my piece. I hope it didn’t come off as anything other than constructive criticism; as it was intended to be out of generosity. So I’ll end say wholeheartedly: Merry Christmas, with all the best I can wish for you both.
I totally agree. To me it seemed like they were almost mocking Linus' quoting of scripture, especially when he said "Is the sermon over?" It was like he was saying "Okay, we got that out of the way, not let's get back to the story">

Telling you where and how Christmas started is not a "sermon." It's informative.
The celebration of Christmas started in Rome about 336, but it did not become a major Christian festival until the 9th century.
Early celebrations of Christmas are derived from European festivals that marked the end of the harvest, and the winter solstice.
👆
Now THAT is informative.
@@LatetotheParty Your version of the beginnings of *Christ's Mass* is one version. It is rightfully a celebration of the birth of Christ.

@@LatetotheParty I merely look at the name. What is *your* version of how "Christmas" got its name?
*"...a very religual spin..."??!!*
*You're implying Charles Schultz inserted something into the meaning of Christmas that is out of place. The Holiday name is "Christmas" i.e. "Christ Mass": Jesus and His Virgin birth is the origin and cause for the existence of the Holiday (or Holy Day). Ironically, your statement comes amid your observation that some people miss the "true meaning" of Christmas for the commercialism that surrounds it. Back at ya' slick.
