    How much of a drop from the floor threshold did they go? I'm building a free standing deck also. Just worried about rain or snow getting in house.

    The comments about gaps are all wrong. You have to account for them being wet when installing. If they are already wet when you install you are still going to put a gap between them. when dry, you are putting a larger gap to allow for expansion. Never run them flush. Mostly you want to allow for dirt and smaller debris to be able to wash through when pressure washing.

    Carriage bolts are not recommended for deck construction. Use through bolts.

    Just a thought but you might want to be consistent on what you are using/selling. at 1:08 you say you are using deck anchors. Good luck selling those. In the store they are called Deck tie Backs, on the website they are called Deck adapters. Good job on making me spend a half an hour on the phone with a Lowes professional who was only able to locate this item by me waiting for him to watch this video to see exactly what I wanted to buy! Luckily he was able to locate them in store after he seen the image from the video. Just like the tape you put over the beams. You don't sell grace vycor in the store. I love the fact this video was posted just a few months ago, yet one would think t was posted 10 years ago. FAIL!

      Glad I found this comment! Seems they are now just called Deck Tie on the website.

    With a free-standing deck, what would you do if you needed to replace the siding?

    What's the estimated cost of this project for just the material? I'm looking into building a deck of this size and would like to get a general idea what the cost associated with the material will be for lumber.

    This does now show them leaving a air gap between each plank as if you get rain the water wont have anywhere to drain off to and rot your wood.

    • @lowes
      @lowes  Před 7 lety +5

      mike198383 drainage gap depends on if you're working with wet or dry lumber. We cover those details in the step-by-step article, you'll find it here: low.es/2kWJx2A. Thanks for watching.

      The spacing this talks about is the vertical posts for railings but not the deck planks them selves. I have a deck right now that previous owners did and did not properly leave a small gap between boards which caused water to sit on top and ruin the paint and also cause board swell and damage.

      if you use fresh treated lumber, you leave no gap. as the wood dries it will create a gap.
