  • My antique vacuum restoration video is ready! Till now thats my most elaborate restoration videos old tools. It took me a lot of time and work to get this vacuum restoration of an almost 90 years old Vorwerk Kobold vacuum cleaner done. This step by step restoration shows you the main techniques of my work like wood staining, grinding, mirror polish aluminium, electric motor restoration and more. Also iincluded is galvanic nickel plating to show you some kind of abonus stuff. By the way: It is a Vorwerk Kobold Modell 34, which means that it is from 1934.
I absolutely love those old home electrics, very charming and simply cool tools. In the end ypu can see a final test in which I demonstrate it to you. In my opinion a perfect restoration and cleaning job :)

That thing has been through the Great Depression, WW2, the beginning of the EEC, the Cold War, the premiere of StarWars and Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the split of the Soviet Union, Facebook, Twitter and Netflix, not to mention the beginnings of Microsoft and Apple. And it still works...BIG WAU!

I’m weird. I’ve always loved the sound of vacuum cleaners. They sing me to sleep. If it’s nice and warm, and someone is vacuuming, I’m gonna fall asleep. Difficult when I was staying in a house with a maid that cleaned every morning. I’d get up, sit down in the library with a coffee or something and wake up an hour or so later. Haha

About ten years ago there was an Airway upright vacuum cleaner in a friend's shop from 1926 which was still in working condition. It had a hollow handle onto which a hose could be attached at the end. It also had a power brush roll with its own motor and headlight. Airway was best known for the introduction of sanitary paper bags for vacuum cleaners- they called it the "Airway Sanitary System".

    1. You criticise the casting? These parts were most probably made long before pressure die casting and only full die casting was available. I only now notice this machine is about 90 years old. That means I was not even a thought when it was made. Please respect the older folk for their achievements with the technology they had at hand - your grand technology which you take for granted today was based on that.
    2. This old machine most probably saw a lot of hard "mileage" during it's days and your restoration of it is greatly appreciated. The result looks pretty good, I must say.
    Very interesting to watch.

Hey Pieter. First of all: Thank you for your detailed comment. Second: You are absolutely right!!!!!! It wasn't my intention to discredit somebody and yes, one can think I did. I`m sorry about that, I should know it better, because this is part of my real life profession. And one additional point: If my spoke would be the truth, this thing would never have lasted so long and that's the evidence for the quality!
Thanks again for your honest and true words and I hope to see you again with another critical comment, I pretty much like that way of conversation, that's what comments are made for.

Liked the restoration, because it was so well done and attentive to originality, even if I usually prefer to leave the patina to such old things. You made a very faithful restoration work here....and how much time and patience !The only thing i do not agree is leaving the wooden parts visible instead of repainting them black as original....this happens quite often with old Kobolds and make them look a bit too prehistorical to me....i personally prefer seing them exactly as they came out from the factory, but this is a very personal point of view ( and i also did the same thing with one of my 1920's Hoovers years ago....but I changed my mind later ). Thanks for sharing, many interesting tips and krafts ! Guido - Italy

Yes, the timber parts were pretty much always painted back then. The brush attachments sometimes had beautiful faux grain finishes! I think my 1934 AEG Vampyrette (inherited from my great-grandmother via my great-aunt) originally had one but it's more or less completely gone due to damp storage in the past, my great-aunt dragged it out of her barn when she gave it to me. It even still had the original deep red mains lead with moulded plug, an absolute rarity in that era!

Great job! Like many others have mentioned your work is as good - if not better than what other Restorers show on their channels. The only thing to improve: I would suggest putting a bit more emphasis on the correctness of your "subtitles".. Many typos and "false friends" used due to direct translation from German ;-) But again... Respect for the demonstrated craftsmanship!

I used to be so scared of vacuums despite having a toy vacuum, now almost everytime I see these vacuums I get curious to hear them.
I’m not sure but we used to have this Hoover vacuum & maybe it was completely cloth,I know it was grey,I had a nightmare about it when I was little so my memory of it might be off,I also started vacuuming once as a teen & now as a adult I vacuum because it is quite fun! 😂
I think I was scared because there is this horror movie of electronics turning on themselves! 😂

I am pretty sure that you painted the label the opposite that it originally was. On etched tags like that one, the background is usually painted, and the letters are bare metal.

Nope, you're not right my friend. Maybe you didn't watch the video careful enough but you can see the original condition of the tag at 0:06. And all the Vorwerk pictures of this model tell me the same.

Great job,....but the pop rivets are "Stiehl Bruch". The original studs to secure the name plate/Logo would have made it perfect.

This old Kobold 34 is very quiet! The Kobold from the 1950s and 1960s are loud like a Siren!

You are so right, the models between 70s and late 90s are so disgusting and loud and the don't have a good suction power.

Who needs a Dyson when you have a Vorwerk...

good result - I wonder whether (at 12.12) you could have used a small, firm, very short-haired paint roller to paint the letters? Would be worth an experiment, and I understand our lovely English road signs used to be painted that way. I bet that in the factory that made this device, they used a little roller or maybe a paint pad of some sort to do the lettering. Best wishes from your friends in the UK!

Thanks a lot. I tried sooooo much things but the main problem was the height of the letters. I fund nothing to be successful.

sure - trial and error - "experiment is the best teacher" but I've looked at some of my old tools and machines and there is no way these badges were painted with a brush.

If you replaced only the main body, the motor and the pipework with Dyson parts, you'd have the equivalent of a modern machine!
