- Here is a classic interview with Roald Dahl, perhaps the finest writer for children of all time.
Within the short film he discusses his routine, his craft and his work space.
I do not own the copyright but felt it would be useful for educational purposes for budding young writers out there.

I am 42 years old and I still enjoy reading his "Children's Books" again and again and again...
I truly recommend the adult stories, they give so much impact
Exactly! Who says children books are only meant for children
As a male in his late 40's I'll say it. My Sins are scarlet. Roald's books, I read. Rest in peaches Dear man, the world is better because of you.
was the peaches part intentional because of James and the Giant Peach?
Sunday Thoughts probably
As nice as the comment is . The world is much worse now than it was back then.
@@thekingsown10 it certainly is
"the world is better because of you" perfectly put .
What a genius. Writing brilliant stories mainly for children is surely one of the loveliest gifts.
and the fact, that children audiences is kinda difficult,he kinda likes doing adult audiences, cause they have a easy type of like.
You're books certainly read, Mr. Dahl. I grew up reading your books; and like Matilda, I turned 30 this year. I'm a middle school English teacher in India and your books light up my students' faces like I imagine they did mine those long years ago.
cute:3
@@aghhhhhhh679 haha yes
Me too!
@@aghhhhhhh679 Who cares? you knew what they meant. Don't be petty.
dumbdogsthatbark let them also watch the movie as a treat! I loved the movie!
I find it quite fascinating how he depicts his working environment. How he explains the state of the room to how comfortable his arm chair is and how many pencils he uses. Even in this short clip you get a taste of what a brilliant storyteller he was.
I know. This goes with a rule of mine: be comfortable. And how can you get more comfortable than this?
Ye
That’s why I revisit this . Inspiring .
Roald dahl is my favorite book writer and qintuen blake is my favorite book drawer all so
Everytime I need motivation to get into my writing zone and focus I watch this video.
This man wrote most of my favorite childhood books. I would read them over and over till the pages would tear. and at the age of 22 this is the first time I'm seeing his face. I'm crying. I'm so thankful for all he's done, for coloring my childhood days with beauty and mystery and excitement..I'm forever thankful..i love and respect him so much❤
Too bad he was an anti-Semite and held despicably racist beliefs.
The fact that he wrote even when he was old is truly proof that he loved to tell stories. Rest in peace, Roald. You shall always be in our hearts and minds.
Roald Dahl was born on September 13th, 1916. If he was 66 in this documentary, which took place in the summer - it was probably filmed in the summer of 1982.
I’m obsessed with Danny the Champion of the World my first book I read.
Up there with the greatest writers ever.
Tolkien
Dickens
Wells
Burroughs
Lewis
Carroll
Doyle etc
Everything about this video is satisfying, from his voice to the birds in the background to the scenery to the way he brushes the rubber of his board and sharpens his pencils, something about all of it satisfies the inner child in me, I guess him living in that reality is what allowed him to write books that reach children in the way they do.
I love this man, so sad that he passed away. He needs to be more popular, I’ll always cherish his books.
I am positive that up to this day he is indeed much more popular than ever
More popular? He was worth $10 million
Well, this guy is still popular to this day. But at least for Infinity War.
I know his books and movies were very popular but himself isn’t that much popular I think he needs more support till this day.
He's sold more than 250 million copies of his books. Not bad!
I wanna cry this is precious
Me too....
I love you roald dahl. I love your stories. Thankyou for making my childhood wonderful.
I'm almost 40 years old and am yet another persoon who has grown up reading this great man's books, I'd never heard his voice before. I can remember seeing in one of his books he'd died in 1990 and that made me really sad because I knew he wouldn't write any more. I loved Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, BFG and Danny the Champion of the World
Roald's voice and quiet sense of humour gives me a sense of quietude. I really love seeing him sitting in his armchair and peacefully writing in his quiet little hut. He must have been very well organised with a good writing schedule.
There are people who are loved long after they are gone.. ❤️❤️
What I'd give for a writing den like Roald's
You could always get a summer house
@@nord1486 lol because everyone has the money for that. Perhaps you could give us some so we can be as middle-class as you?
@@comteroi9219 Who said I was middle-class? I'm suggesting he gets one, not me
I'd love a little cottage about that size in the country. Something calming about the countryside. Imagine the creative potetial in that sort of environment.
@@tremainejotham297 i think any urban setting will cultivate far more creativity than a field of butterflies, but that is awesome aswell
I could listen to him speak all the time he’s got such a soothing voice
That shed looks so cosy! It’s looks like a place where you can go to recalibrate your mind and unleash the your creativity
Wow what a humble story teller he is. Such a brilliant talent. His books are still amusing the young and young at heart today. Surely a testament to his creative genius.
This man's books helped me through a difficult time in my childhood.
Where is was in poverty and still suffering the consequences of the recent divorce of my parents.
He had always inspired me with his beautiful books and imaginations
always love the idea of having a quiet little place you got to and be creative.
That last quote in the end was chilling
Genius! Genius! Genius! Thank you for everything!
Read his books as a kid, and I still like to read them.
He is so good story writter I like his book very much🥰🥰🥰🥰🤩🤩😍😍😍☺️☺️☺️☺️
I absolutely adore this man. When I finished reading Boy and Going Solo , I was not finished. I read them again until they were memorized.
You should check out the expansed edition of Boy called More About Boy... Its a really nice sort of 'directors cut' of the book. Got my first Dahl book in 1988...still can pick up any of his stuff and just lose myself in it. His novels for adults and short stories he wrote for Playboy are excellent too.
He’s a very clever
🤩
Thanks Roald dahl
This man is a legend!!! He does not get enough credit for the amazing worlds he created and the stories he told!!!!
Noruken Obsidian really? He is really famous and his books are celebrated worldwide
Noruken Obsidian Uhh he gets a lot of credit 😂 what are you talking about ?
Totally agree!
He was antisemitic
I love his short stories
Greatest writer rip
He’s like me, just wants a quiet place to let his mind wander, little man cave, comfy chair, blanket, and off to work. What a beautiful man. That’s how you live.
I learnt English from his books still now I Read them
Thanks Mr Ronald Dahl
Omg! I miss this guy so much! I will never forget all the books he wrote. Thank you Roald Dahl
This comment is dedicated to those that found this after watching Wes Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
Beautiful tribute, Wes.
I adored him when I was five/six, and all the way through my early childhood. I’m now nearly fourteen, and still consider this man my hero. I even have all my old books of his still on my shelf. Matilda will always be my most cherished and favourite book, no matter how old I may be.
m o l l y I walked into my local library and Danny the Champion of the World popped into my mind. I first read it 40 years ago! Of course I borrowed it from the library. It's odd and beautiful the way certain things still resonate. Have a wonderful, creative, and deep life
Roald Dahl is my All-time favourite ayutAuthir
I'm 40 and I remember getting James and Giant Peach when I was 5/6... Then it started a huge Dahl craze. And I still have all those beautiful old 80s/90s paperbacks. His work is timeless. It's great to hear a young person who so passionate about reading. ☀ ✌️ From 🇮🇪
Aw Bless Him He’s In An Even Better Place For Creativity Now.
The first two minutes of this are the most soothing piece of film that I know.
He is an inspiration for me. I love creativity and his sense of adventure when he was young. Reading his going solo book has given me a urge to explore and it is my favourite one. His adventurers are very fascinating. I really wish he was among us in the present. Rest in peace.
This is a most precious living doc. Thank you very much for the sharing.
The bit where he talks about how children read the same books is very relatable. I remember reading a 200 page book in a single day and then re-reading it again about a week later.
Like many others, I am a life long and huge admirer of Roahl Dahl and grew up reading and re-reading many times his works, but (as now a father myself). I was crestfallen to read that his own daughter, Tessa, accused him of being a selfish father. She once said: "Daddy gave joy to millions of children. But I was dying inside."
Such things happen. Enid Blyton's daughter Imogen said sth very similar of her mother. Just because a person is a great writer, doesn't mean they are a great parent. There are many other examples. One other is A.A. Milne.
I’m an adult but I still love reading Mr. Dahls books. Incase anyone who isn’t aware he also wrote adult mysteries and fiction and a collection of ghost stores as well. Should anyone be craving a more adult version of Mr. Dahl’s writing.
I just read "Boy" and "Going Solo" for the first time. Great books... I had no idea that he flew Hurricanes in WWII and saw such intense aerial combat. And he found peace after that. He did SO much in his life, it's amazing.
I love his books, all of them❤️❤️❤️
What a wonderful little documentary. It's so fascinating to find out where and how famous writers write their stories.
Some people claim Dah had OCD:
"British neurologist Andrew Larner, also suggests that Dahl later exhibited what may have been symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
“[F]or example,” notes Larner, “when writing in his famous shed, he had to have a particular type of paper (yellow American Legal), and both a particular brand and a specific number (6) of pencils.”"
A lot of writers (including me) have favourite things, places and rituals when writing, so for me, his ritual was not really connected to OCD.
I have read all your books and my little sister in year 3 has been watching your videos and they love it (smoking is not good)
He is my favorite author. I have read all of his books and I also have a giant book of Roald Dahl which are full of poems and limericks he has wrote . All are masterpieces.

What a very creative human being ❤ in this interview he talks from the heart ❤ greatly missed.
It's nice to see the great man at work, he's in a place where he feels comfortable. I like the way he speaks and thinks and the fact he doesn't hold back and says what is true and what we all think but can't say. Like his views on the Jewish
His hate has no place in a modern society.
And yet even as an adult, I’ve read various books multiple times as have many acquaintances of mine who are readers as well. We are all children at heart I suppose.
What an interesting, charming man he was.
His books are the best ❤I read them even though I’m nearly 40
How I love your books Mr.Dahl I feel comfortable when I read your books ❤.RIP 😭😭😭
That hut, if it still exists, should be a listed building :)
The only books I read are yours and I get my inspiration from you
He is so normal and humble. With all the egomaniacs, once they achieve fame, it's refreshing to see someone with his talent be so down to earth.
I read his books when I was young, now my kids read it too. 👍👍👍
Roald never knew it at the time, but he was the founder of the modern man cave, that set millions of men the world over free!
I ♥️ Roald Dahl ' s novels.
he aspired me to be a writer, engrossed since I was 7
He's always been an inspiration to me, too.
Me too.
How strange for a video like this to be uploaded this recent, very lovely seeing the golden british treasure that Dahl is talking about his personal life and living habits.
I've only just started the channel, hence the recent uploading. I'm trying to create something of a creative writing resource for younger writers and Mister Dahl had to have a presence. :)
You MUST do Beatrix Potter and Tolkien, Lovecraft, T.S Elliot, Antonia Barber.
Especially Beatrix Potter, with the new Peter Rabbit movie and you uploading at around the same time your channel might get some attention.
Fantastic tip, buddy. Much appreciated.
youve got to see this new video of esio trot in color, look it up
I shall, thank you.
Such a big part of my childhood.
I was reading Matilda and my little brother decided to pour juice all over it, so now I’m screaming my head off.
Love this fantastical man ;D
You sir are a beautiful man
My imperfect inspiration...
I really luv this man's books Iam reading since 6th standard got interest in his books and bought many books I had read that fox one book almost 7times he is my inspiration
I grew up reading his books! Read pretty much every single one that I could find.
It's also how I learned English as an ESL student in 2005.
Hear Hear..Roald Dahl is the finest writer for children of all time ..imagine a young Sudanese girl living in Abu Dhabi UAE..completely bewitched by Roald Dahl books...as a child I believe have read most of his books..I remember going to my English teacher and asking her..."I searched for "Twits" in the dictionary and still didn't understand its meaning in the title of "The Twits" :) ..(this was pre-Google times..when we all had an Oxford dictionary physically in our school bags ;) ) My teacher creatively asked me to reread the book and try to understand it my self...if I loved English for a reason it was for the elements of surprise..laughter..shock(The Witches was a bit creepy...;))and fun in Dahl's books... but I felt Roald Dahl's love for all children via his books and sensed he understood me as a child ...and I loved him for it..I believe his secret was in the way he wrote to children in their spirit and from children's perspective...his work is his legacy..and he had a strong electric personality...intelligent...witty and brave...and respect for all the joy he brought and still brings to children all over the world..one day I'll have my children (hopefully) read his books...
I've just read "Boy". What an excellent book. I am 46.
Thanks for posting.
this man is still a genious!! i've just started reading his books and, as a experienced reader i can tell their books are brilliant!!

🥀Amazing Man he will be missed. There's so much in writting books, poem's ect: I love them all. Thank's for posting this video it's priceless🥀☝️🥀
He speaks exactly how I read his stories. They aren't supposed to be read quickly. Read it like a kind, interesting narration.
this was the first video that came up on Roald dahl and was very very helpfull for my presentation very informational
Thank you
A 1982 interview, before The Witches (1983), The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me (1985), Matilda (1988), Esio Trot (1990), The Vicar of Nibbleswicke (1991) and The Minpins (1991)
The BFG came out during this interview.
This man is the one behind the inspiration of countless children, but not only children. People of all ages. He created an outlet for us to exhibit creativity and immerse ourselves in breathtaking adventures! He gave us dreams and goals. My respects go out to Roald Dahl!

Such a lovely Sir.
Roald Dahl is quintessentially brilliant
My top three favourite Roald Dahl books are Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda and the BFG. I also recently met the actress who played Matilda (Mara Wilson) in the 1996 film at a Comic Convention

Something the great man doesn't mention out of modesty is he was a Spitfire pilot in Ww2, thanks to him and the others of the few he wrote his books in English instead of German.
Hurricanes. ;)
He mentions it everywhere in his books. Usually embellishing and leaving out the parts where someone else helped.
@@kelman727 Where? The only time he mentioned it was on his autobiography, flying solo. And if your talking about the about roald dahl thing on the back of his books, i sorely hope your not stupid enough to think he included that himself.
