- Do you miss traveling because of the COVID-19 pandemic? Me too! Here's a video about my April 2019 trip to the beautiful city of Kyiv, Ukraine.
NOTE: When this video was published in 2019, The Ukrainian spelling "Kyiv" was already in widespread usage in English, but French, being slower to adapt to local spellings, still used "Kiev" almost exclusively. This is why you'll hear me say "Kiev" in this video. If I were to shoot this video today, I would use "Kyiv" both in French and in English.

"Hélène se promène" videos offer comprehensible input to French learners, in particular those learning Quebec French or Canadian French. They feature English and French subtitles, and propose a short quiz at the end.
Kyiv ("Київ" in Ukrainian) is the capital of Ukraine. It's a gorgeous city with stunning architecture, including in some of its metro stations such as "Zoloti Vorota" ("Золоті ворота"). The metro station "Arsenalna" ("Арсена́льна") is the deepest metro station in the world, at 105 meters (334 feet). A great place to visit in Kyiv is "The Last Barricade" ("Остання Барикада"), a secret restaurant featuring modern takes on classic Ukrainian cuisine.

Bonjour Vlad! Lorsque nous avons fait la vidéo Hélène et moi en 2020, nous nous sommes vraiment posé cette question car nous étions déjà au courant que "Kyiv" était l'orthographe préférée. À l'époque, l'Académie française préférait "Kiev" encore, alors qu'en anglais c'était "Kyiv." Ça a changé depuis! C'est pour ça que j'ai mis le texte et l'image à jour. Mais malheureusement, il n'est pas possible de changer la vidéo elle-même!
Pour la borsch, oui, ça c'est une vraie erreur, désolé. :D
Merci pour les commentaires! Comme Daniel le dit, lors de notre voyage, en 2019, l'orthographe recommandée par l'Académie Française était "Kiev"... Mais avec les événements récents, tout le monde a reconnu l'orthographe "Kyiv". Et désolée pour la soupe, c'est un lapsus! 😀

! I work with Helene on her videos, and I researched this issue extensively. I want to chime in on your comment. :)
I really understand the desire for Ukrainians to get the world to recognize the Ukrainian-language transliteration of "Kyiv" (as opposed to the Russian-desired "Kiev") as the official one. In the English version of the description and subtitles, we used "Kyiv" everywhere, as it's officially recognized as the right transliteration of the Ukrainian "Київ."
However, in French, I made the decision to stick with "Kiev." The reason is that the French have not officially changed the recognized name of the city to "Kyiv" in official documents. The French do have a tendency to stick to old nomenclatures for foreign cities... For instance, Beijing is still "Pékin" and Guangzhou is still "Canton."
For that reason, we stuck with Kiev in French for now, but we acknowledged "Kyiv" as the proper name in English.

Comme Dan l'a expliqué, en français, on écrit encore "Kiev" et "Pékin", alors qu'en anglais on écrit "Kyiv" et "Beijing".
