Titan was a submersible, or an underwater vehicle, operated by the privately owned U.S. company OceanGate that organised underwater expeditions for both research and tourism. It was designed to dive up to 4,000 meters deep and carry five people, including one pilot and four crew members. On June 18, 2023, Titan embarked on a mission to explore the wreck of the Titanic, the famous ship that sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg, killing more than 1,500 people. Among the crew members were Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, and Shahzada Dawood, a British billionaire and philanthropist. The Titanic wreck site is located about 600 km south of Newfoundland, Canada, in the North Atlantic Ocean.
However, something went terribly wrong during the dive. About one hour and forty-five minutes into the journey, contact with Titan was lost. The submersible stopped sending any signals or data to the surface. The authorities launched a massive search and rescue operation, using airplanes, boats, and sonar technology to locate the missing vehicle and its occupants. They had only 96 hours of life support for a crew of five. The search area was huge, covering about 200,000 square kilometers.
Unfortunately, after nearly four days of searching, the US Coast Guard found debris near the Titanic wreckage that matched the Titan submersible. They confirmed that the submersible had suffered a catastrophic implosion due to the immense water pressure at that depth, killing all five people on board. It was a tragic end to a daring adventure that aimed to document and study the Titanic and its rate of decay on the ocean floor.
