  • Nothingface was an extremely unlucky band that was around from day 1 of nu-metal all the way to the bitter end and never quite made it. In many ways, the world wasn't ready for them, and is only catching up now.

Got to talk to Matt personally at Tattoo the Earth in San Antonio. He didn't care for the Deftones and was definitely a brooding type of guy at the time. Yet, cool as shit, down to earth and chill. He spoke with honesty and conviction. RIP Matt, you'll forever be missed.

I have this album, Sickles autographed my copy in 2003. Nothingface were a cut above its peers, but never attained mainstream success, which is a shame. Skeletons is the band's swan song and aged well. It makes me wonder what the band's subsequent albums would sound like. RIP Matt.

When Matt sang or screamed, his passion DRIPS from the speakers❤🤟
You can't fake that, it can't be taught. You can learn how to sing you can learn death vocals but you can't learn or accurately imitate having fiery hot convictions. That's what makes a frontman or frontwoman irreplaceable.
Chris Houck is one of my favorite 1990s metal drummers. He adds jazz like drumming to metal. Seriously, really listen to his drum parts. They're not typical nu metal or typical rock&roll drum patterns. His drumming in Everlasting Godstopper is a prime example.
Has anyone else noticed Tom's guitar parts often have a slight country twang ?? He's such a unique guitarist especially for this era. His guitar parts are heavy A.F. but almost always have a memorable melody. Which is something many metal guitarists forget: the average human brain loves melody.
I've been a fan of this band since 2002. R.I.P. Matt. Their music lives on..

Sadly to this day, qualities that are still not noticed or appreciated, but at least here we are, on a comment on a CZcams video, making notice of a video from a creator that still misses the entire point of the band, lyrics & riffs included. Stoked he made this video, bringing some highlights to the band, but sadly missing the point of it all, as he even admits during this video. Not surprising, as summary videos like this, of bands that have died off, tend to be halfass summaries such as this. But still, I thank you for bringing light to a band/albums that deserved everything more than what they got.

Great video! Love Nothingface to this day, saw them live numerous times. The last time I saw them live was February 23rd, 2006 at the IRock in Detroit. They headlined ahead of Crossbreed and Silent Civilian. Matt had a fever that night of 101 and asked his Nothingface-loving crowd to help him with the screaming sections, which we obliged; us, the adoring fans leaned forward and screamed those lyrics louder every time he turned the mic towards us. We were like a multi-headed Nothingface hydra. They played a great set that night. Very memorable. Miss NF. \,,/

In 2000, I always tried to get friends into new bands. That Christmas someone got violence for me, taking a chance on if I would like it. I never got to see them live sadly.
I was beyond thrilled when they got back together and were going to have new music. Had my fingers crossed they would prevail. It would be nice if some more b-sides/demos surfaced or got released, but I would guess that ship sailed. As I got older my taste of music changed, and some music I loved became stuff I don't know why I liked.

I Am Him had a direct delivery that made it profound, particularly with the amazing chorus melody. My band released a final album in 2004 and this album definitely amped up our vocal content. I love and miss this band. Huge inspirations, from the technical prowess of Pacifier, to looping the apparently perfectly written song I, Diablo while riding to gigs (my favorite of theirs), to this whole album when we were also branching out and diversifying our songs. I have a poster of the Violence album up in the wall.

"There were a lot of other factors involved in all of this beyond anything with Matt."). IMO, Maxwell is a total tool. he just wanted to go play cowboy party-metal bullshit and make money. whatever.

I imagine the chapped ass of putting all the effort into NF only to fail over and over must have been so frustrating to Maxwell that he just wanted to succeed. I was there in a band in the early 00s. There was such a struggle to break through that we were constantly struggling with how commercial to go. What not many artists talk about is that, even if you do stay true to yourself, that ideal can still bend towards commerciality subconsciously. Bands only keep material that they "like," and that is where the bias comes in. What I like about Skeletons is that it was catchy/hooky, but also incredibly honest and meaningful. That's how you get a masterwork.

The beauty of Nothingface to me is that its something special that many people won't hear and tbh probably wouldn't understand. Since they never got that popular I feel they never got comfortable and were always trying to push the limit of their creations. Although they didn't reach the success they deserved I feel like anyone who knows the band can honestly say they never sold out and never did anything because the label or someone told them to. Nothingface is the musical equivalent of the middle finger. They didn't give a fuck and it was always about the music and fans from day one

Refusing to compromise their vision for a shot at success was one of their greatest strengths, but was also a major factor in ending them. Tom and Bill had families to feed, driving Tom to focus on the reliable paycheck that is Hellyeah. Meanwhile Matt was crushed when Violence flopped and seemed to have lost his passion in the face of all those setbacks. By the time he got it back, it was tragically too late.

thank u so much for this video nf got me thru my late teens and young adulthood without too much damage to the world around me. a member of 7th rail crew tom g put me on to them and i never looked back. i found matt on fb and reading the comments he was very displeased with some trolls. i sent him a heartfelt msg telling him not to sweat the trolls and asked some questions about what he felt his responsibilities were if any when it comes to fans and. music. upon news of his death i went back to see if he read the msg and it remains unread. i dont blame him one bit. he gave all he was willing to give to the world and u cant ask anything more from anyone. we are all lucky af that his legacy is there for us we just have to press play.

It was kind of hard to follow your words because the background music was sort of competing for attention and wasn't ducking under your commentary, but overall great review! I'm a huge nothingface fan as well and it's cool to see a good review of a timeless band.
    RIP Matt.

Long time NF fan since the skeletons era and I really enjoyed this retrospective on the band and album. I also really enjoyed your recent video for LP so keep up the good work. I was curious about what song off of Violence was about cannabis?

I fucking love nothingface! Definitely one of the main reasons I went to ozzfest 03. Got the cd to get signed. Go to the FYE booth to find out that they were kicked off the tour and label because of anti government views. I was so pissed.

Thank you for this video. There’s a certain mystique surrounding this band for me. They weren’t the first band I listened to or anything but they were that one band I could never get enough of. I think the saddest band art of all is that their sound just got better every album.
Mostly kidding with this statement but shame on you for putting down I am him. That’s one of my all time favorites. There is no bad song on Skeletons. It’ll go down in my book at the best metal album of all time

I remember my pal Joseph gave me a promotional disc with "Bleeder" on it. I ended up buying the censored version of "Violence" and I know every single edit on that album. Love it. The drums, the heaviness, it's like a monstrous heartbeat.

Holy shit dude. I was just falling in love with their Violence album all over again, when this video was recommended. I don’t really know much about this band other than I know I love them. I stopped everything and needed to know band details when I first heard one of their songs almost 7(?) years ago. I just tonight saw the Ether music video. I’ve never even seen these dudes before. It’s kind of crazy. I’m really stoked to learn more about them. And if we can all just punch Nazis for fun then the world will be a better place.

There are good bands that were never really nu metal but often get mistaken for it (soad, ratm, helmet) good bands that are legitimately part new metal but do something different too like punk or thrash elements (snot, deftones, soulfly). But there are very few good pure nu metal bands. I'm going to throw up sevendust.

this was a great video, thank you so much. Nothingface is one of my favorite bands and as a leftist i always appreciated the political commentary i clocked from them but i didnt know the exact extent of it, and hearin matt was an anarchist is very inspirin as someone who wants to make nu metal myself. im also glad to get them bein named after the Voivod album confirmed after assumin so for a long time lol

Jerry hadn't been in a band with literally any of those mfs in over 10 years each. Duke and Matt were into drugs, Vinnie was old and fat. Don't act surprised when these people die.

It’s one of the great disappointments in Metal that two amazing bands like Mudvayne and Nothingface produced something so gingoistic and vapid as Hellyeah. Great video btw, learned a lot!

    • @ThisReviewKillsFascists
      @ThisReviewKillsFascists  Před 5 měsíci

Hellyeah did put out one good song on their final album at least. Black Flag Army rules, Tom Maxwell just can't stop accidentally playing in bands with anarchist singers.

I love Nothingface, I even got to see them open for Pantera on their last tour before breaking up back in 2001. That said, I'm glad to see another big Nothingface fan publicly say that Pacifier is not really that good or indicative of the band's trademark sound. In fact, I'm pretty tired of hearing "fans" say that was their best album and 'after that one, they sold out, man'. /eyeroll
