You controlled the boy the whole game since you played as him, when he pulled the plug he disconnected your link to him like you disconnecting a keyboard or a mouse, therefor he went back into his mindless state like the other mindless humans waiting to be controlled again.

I believe we are controlling the boy for the majority of game. He is alive.
Then we are murdered by the water gypsy and at that point the boy is a dead husk and controlled by the blob.
At the alternate ending the blob disconnects itself.
In the normal ending the blob gets outside.

The secret ending breaks down the "fourth wall" between player and character in the game. When the boy pulls the plug, the player (you) is fully 'outside' the game (because it's over) and the boy is freed from the player controlling him. Or something.
Now that I think of it, the same idea may be operating in the standard ending, in which case the developers are comparing the people who play their game to the fleshy blob controlling the boy.

I think the fleshy blob is a metaphor for teamwork and leadership where this is an evolved form of human work. Instead of there being a boss and a bunch of mindless followers, they've become one and work together seamlessly and are super powerful that way. It's actually how the company steam operates. I hear they don't have a ceo or leadership. They all work together like the fleshy blob..

I might be a few years late, but...
So, after reading a few interpretations of the ending, I got my own explanation: I think the ending means that we, as a player, are part of the experiment. We are the intelligence being trained there, and we do as we get used to the gameplay. The secret ending is an alternative as we supposedly notice that and conclude: hey, I don't want to be tested and participate in this cruel experiment, so I will just disconnect. You know how hackers are hired to hack a system to test it's security? That was our role in all this, so by helping the blob to escape, we made this factory even more secure and functional. That's why the scientists didn't bother to stop the player. So the second ending is like "hey I'm not participating on this shit". That's why the escape in the end was so meaningless and probably why you can't keep moving when you reach your destination. The experiment is over and the scientists stop you (player) from controlling the blob, because they actually have some degree of controll over you too.

Word. I played it last night & the fact that a game of this nature (not a high production compared to most mainstream titles) can hit so hard speaks volumes. I consider this game a masterpiece for the story alone. Some of the puzzles were great & the use of sound & light had me in awe. I noticed what you said - not only do some of the scientists not stop you but they help you. The only thing that makes me question whether you were being controlled the whole time was that some scientists were sacrificed, becoming part of the blob. There was one moment where the blob lands on a scientist & there is huge stain of blood. I said to myself, “mmmmm I’m hungry.” Not really 😂

One theory that I think makes sense, the boy is controlled by us (or himself) from the beginning till the mermaid killed him at @. As you guys saw, the mermaid plugged the mind-control thing and from there, the boy gains characteristics of the hive mind like breathing underwater, also now the hive mind is controlling him.
The boy was going upwards when the mermaid killed him. After he got killed, he now goes not to where it fell upwards, but to another direction (the objective was changed). We the players are the boy, we think we're the same boy from the beginning to the end but things have been changed in the middle.
That's why the boy lost control when he unplugs his own power source, he stops. Because it was before the mermaid killed him, the control was on us (or on him).

    • @joetroutt7425
      @joetroutt7425 Před rokem +39

I don't know if anyone else did this in the game, but when I played in that part right before you see the blob, when all the scientists are gathered up to the window, I walked up to the window to to try to look into it. Nobody tried to stop me, and the scientist even looked at me at first and then went back to looking at the blob. I figured that whatever was going on in that big container was so interesting that they didn't care if I was there, or they didn't see me as a threat like those guards did or the dogs did or whatever. But now after reading some of these comments, I think that that does play into the theory that the scientists wanted you to find the blob. That the whole point was the blob trying to escape, that's what the scientists wanted, and your whole entire purpose through the game was to get to the blob so that the blob could try to escape. Initially I was a little confused about why they would trick you and try to trap you in that big water container almost right at the end, but I think it plays into the same thing. And then as soon as you make it outside, right before you get to the water, you die on the shore. Because they kill you. Whatever they wanted to learn from you, from the boy and the blob controlling the boy, watching trying to observe the blob's intelligence... All part of the scientific method I guess.

Why do you think the blob controls the main character? Remember near the ending of the game there was a crate in the air just out of the blobs reach? With a lot of people watching? The people not being scared of you, but just watching you, or being exhilarated? Everything was planned. Everyone is controlled. It did not matter you killed the president. It did not matter you broke free, because the masterminds let you break free. There was no free will. Everything was for nothing, because there was nothing YOU did to begin with.

A point I realized by the end of the game and might be relevant to multiple theories: after being dragged down and killed and/or just "modified" by the aquatic test subjects to breath underwater, the boy can ALSO control the hypnotized/mind wiped creatures without a helmet. This might be shown with the Blob, but also happened beforehand with other people and puzzles without me realizing.
So after reading multiple theories here and tying it in with the globes and the secret ending, I think the boy is controlled by the player/outside controls, but we're controlled by the Blob to free it disguised as us just wanting to solve the mystery. (Spoiler: SERIOUSLY reminds me of Bioshock's plot now that I think about it. Maybe one inspiration of INSIDE?) Maybe it's a mix of both player/outside controls and Blob, and range might matter as we're about halfway into the game and halfway between the Outside controls and Blob's force from Inside (maybe a deep philosophical message?) when the boy is "modified" with both underwater breath and mind control (mind controlled by Blob?). But the globes might be extending the range of either the Blob or the player/control center.
Pulling the plugs out of the hidden globes might be removing the Blob's range of mind control on us/the boy/the whole facility (like Glados from Portal fighting to keep control of the whole place) since this can take place before seeing the Blob. Then we're "allowed" to access our control center and pull the boy's plug because our goal of ending the Blob's control on us/the facility is complete.
Maybe it's the other way around, where the globes belong to the player because they "hum" the same note as the vault lock and removing them breaks our lock for the boy to end our control. In this case, the Blob might be stopping our control so it can remain in power (i.e. Glados)
One way the "control us to control the boy to free the Blob" may not make sense is because the Blob had many others in closer proximity to free it, even though the globes might extend range for its mind control to travel on the boy. Size might matter too, as the boy is smaller and has a less developed brain than the mind-wiped adults inside. Maybe the modification gave the boy a strong mind control on nearby people, while the blob only needed weak control on the boy to beat us/the outside force. Or, again, maybe we still had control over the boy from Outside, only pursuing the mystery all along.
Lots of theories, up to interpretation it seems. The plot never comes together enough for us to make a definitive story that can have plot holes, just a lot of philosophy. I give it a 9/10 for the atmosphere, interesting (though simple) puzzles, and vague story/philosophy that is actually worth a think.

    @tails22x Před 6 lety +397

My 2 cents....The game's overwhelming theme is control...most evident in direct mind control but there are other forms of controls here too.
The hierarchy of control as I see it is as follows...
Boy => You (the player) => Blob => The facility.
-This ending shows how the mind control device controlling the boy is connected to a bunch of computer terminals. Severing the power to these terminals ends the game, and your control over the boy. Therefore you control the boy.
-The blob controls you (but not directly) This is an adventure/puzzle game. The most obvious central mystery of Inside's plot and climax is the blob itself. You are compelled to find the mystery. The blob is the mystery. Therefore blob controls you, you just bring the boy along.
-The facility built the blob and when you fall through the floor of the elevator onto the seascape model there is a light shining on its beach; a model blob is in its center. Whether this model is actually representing the base of a real mountain or a huge test lab is irrelevant--the facility has the ability to see the future. The room filled with 100's of people patiently waiting is further evidence.
    Therefore facility controls blob.
Also the facility has a huge number of unknown experiments running beyond what we have seen. The majority of this game takes place in sections 1, 2, 3, and 4. But near the end there are numbers and doors in the background going all the way up to 12.
The only thing that's nagging me is the large "U" signs that keep reappearing in this game. (The first is when you cross the highway with the semi in the background) The only other time I have seen signs like that was in old cold war footage close to the Berlin wall.

Very likely the blob, as it has several mind control devices strapped to its body. As it seems to be an amalgamation of several human bodies it also has several human brains and can therefore, possibly, control drones over a much larger distance than in any other case, e.g. the boy controlling drones only short distance. If I were to guess the blob either wants to get out and end it as it is in constant pain or it wants to get out to take over the world and take revenge on its creators.
Anyway, I can understand why a government and/or corporation would want to develop mind control technology. Would make it easier to govern or to have mindless work drones for the menial tasks that you can feed biosludge.

If we think back to everything we know to be true as per the rules of the game:
The mind control device works by placing it on the head of the person wanting to do the controlling - the CONTROLLER.
The device then allows the controller to control the movements of another mindless human - the CONTROLLED.
The controlled can then be manipulated into placing a mind control device onto its own head in order to secondarily control another individual. Thus there are now two levels of control, both being dictated by the original controller.
Now that we understand there can be multiple levels of control, as the game has already shown us, we could postulate that this chain of control could possibly go beyond just two levels.
When we first encounter The Blob, it is wearing four mind control helmets. Upon removing them, the body of the little boy is immediately assimilated into The Blob.
I think that The Blob was the original controller all along. The boy has been controlled to the point of laying the groundwork for The Blob’s escape and then when they meet back up in the water tank, the removal of the headsets ceases the control of the boy so he is reabsorbed into The Blob.
That’s what it seems to me is happening anyway. And I think the alternate ending confirms this by showing that if you pull the plug earlier on in the game than the actual final escape, the boy’s body becomes lifeless and is no longer being controlled by The Blob.

Ok try this one: an entity/creature was found that could control minds. Scientists captured it, put it in the holding tank, and started experimenting with it, trying to replicate and amplify its powers. The research yields much wonderful and exotic knowledge, and it is put to use in experiments on human subjects, such as those who eventually become "sirens." Through the experiments going horribly wrong (or is it exactly as planned?), a large portion of the human population ends up having their minds wiped. People eventually figure out how to somewhat control these puppets, but the creature can also control them, and at the time of the game it has just figured out how to bring a number of people to itself, absorbing their mass in an attempt to gain some power to escape. When people had used the knowledge they gained and figured out how to make machines that can replicate or amplify the thing's powers, they made use of them, controlling the mindless people for labor purposes. This is why mindless people are being rounded up, and the boy is indeed one of them. In the beginning of the game, he has just begun to be controlled by the creature, the latest attempt at escape from confinement. The boy puppet has just escaped his captors, who want him back. The boy can endure such extreme maneuvers and perform such physical feats only by being controlled, and eventually he makes his way to his goal, destroying the devices that the people in power had created to amplify their mind control technology along the way. The creature thing escapes the lab, with help from a few humans who have become sympathetic to its imprisonment, foiling the attempts to contain it. It brings its new body into an uncertain world. That sound good?

So you pull the plug on your (the players) device with which you controlled the boy. End, nothing gained.
The other one...well, the question is really whether you end up outside the lab, or inside. The office before the finale has a model slope which might be representative of the sort-of 'Truman-Show-esque' enviroment you end up in, with some sort of light shining down on you.
Or you just end up escaping the lab, really. It's some serious scandinavian mind-blowing either way.

Telltale's The Walking Dead & The Wolg Among Us end on an ambiguous cliffhanger. If you think that this could be even remotely comparable to these fantastic games, then that is absolutey insulting to the entire industry. It doesn't end with ambiguity, it just confuses the player and rolls the credits like it's something meaningful, it couldn't be more insulting if they just put a large text on the screen saying that you wasted your time, because that's exactly what this is.

The title "Inside" supports two meanings.
    1. That someone is inside you the whole time in your mind.
    2. If you watch carefully, in the normal ending. The blob creature actually never gets out of the facility, the light that is coming is actual sunlight passing through a hole of the giant wall of the facility hence, it is still "Inside".

Once, (and if), we break out, we are nothing but a blob of flesh, unable to cope with the outside world.

Well the actual reason to the original ending was that they wanted you to do that their was a path to lead to that. You ever wonder why their was a loose panel in the place they trapped you in? Or why you ended up INSIDE of that thing? You were apart of that experiment. You were drawn to that weird blob monster so that you could control it and the others could research how it could work and react to certain things. Instead of you being free that was the path they put you in. For the secret ending, (ps this actually explains a lot) the reason why you flop down like one of those slave or people whose being controlled, is not because a random person is controlling him, but because YOU are controlling him and he broke free from YOUR control. He is just another puppet under your possession. Ummm I hope that cleared some things up for you. I don’t blame you if this is kinda sad it was really sad for me too.

After leaving this game hanging for like 2-3 years I finally finished today. I didn’t know about the secret ending of what those globes were for but even though that secret ending showed him being released from mind control.. I just think that the person who had control over him could find those globes (since they probably hid them there) and eventually gain control over him again.
But my for some reason I feel like the boy wasn’t being controlled until a certain point in the game. Idk why but him coming out of no where on the run really is suspicious and makes me feel like there may have been another reason why he was running away. And idk why but him being drowned by the siren and then being stuck with that thing makes me think that that’s when it really started. Like it was the same color as those helmets and he was basically dead. But somehow he came back and I feel like that’s when him being controlled really kicked in. But I’m not smart so this probably sounds dumb but it’s just what I think lol

If you look closely, in the background, the mind-control helmet is attached to several computer screens. I think the computer screens are the internet or the video game itself. When we sit down and put on our headphones to play, we, the players, start controlling the boy. And when he pulls the plug the screen goes dark and we no longer have control of the boy. Which is shown when he slumps into a position much like the other mindless people being mind-controlled.

The game has been pretty heavy-handed about the boy being mind-controlled. On more than one occasion, you're required to mind-control one drone, force him into a helmet and have him mind-control another drone that way. Then there are the "Murmaids," which have an exact copy of the boy's body (they aren't girls, nor is the "boy" a boy once its clothes come off) except for the long hair. What all of that means, of course, I can't say. The game doesn't even attempt to tell us and I don't like writing fanfics to fill in for a developer not bothering to put a story in. If we don't know and don't have any grounds to assert, then "we don't know."

I played this game 3 years ago but couldn’t continue because I was freaked out by the silhouette of a sea creature (which later turned out to be the siren / mermaid with hair like the evil woman from The Ring).
Last night, I completed it & oh my word, the ending had me talking constantly, questioning it until my girlfriend told me to shut up.
I’ll no doubt upload said gameplay when I have time but this is no doubt one of the best stories within a game that I’ve ever played.
The lighting of the game was beautiful but eerie at the same time & the use of sound effects & music was phenomenal, contributing to the overall atmosphere.
I was devastated when the blob consumed the boy but, at the same time, I wondered why the f*** the boy would unplug the blob. That ultimately makes me conclude that the boy was summonsed by the blob (or a scientist).
