- Drew Maggi has been playing in the minor leagues since the year 2010. Tonight he made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates and unfortunately, ended up striking out. The moment was a good moment for baseball.

I teared up looking at this. This shows that you never give up on your dreams, no matter how hard and long it takes. Pure class and respect for the Pirates fans and organization. I wish Drew Maggi much success in his career.
I'm not crying; YOURE crying!
It makes me sad to think about just how many people put in as much time as he did or even longer and STILL never make it to The Show. Even to make it to the minor leagues they still got to be better than like 90% of the population and they still have to take part time jobs to supplement their income. It sucks.
@@justincohen4823 While yes, "it sucks", perhaps playing a game down in a developmental league isn't a profession that justifies a comfy full-time salary.
@@teebob21 I mean the same draft that picked a Mike Trout picked this guy. He didn't choose to linger down in the dungeons for a decade. They might as well have not chose him so he could be free to be an accountant in Tampa or whatever. (New fan, open to being educated on how exactly the draft/minor league system actually operates if my assumption is wrong)
@@justincohen4823 Perhaps he should have chosen to be an accountant for the past 13 years instead of being in A+ and AA ball. Or maybe he should have been better at playing the game.
No one is holding a gun to Drew Maggi's head and forcing him to play baseball for a living to the age of 33.
I love his story; don't get me wrong. My point is that not all activities that people get paid to do need to be a "living wage".
I umpire baseball and softball all year long at a high level, as well as some other youth sports. I attend professional meetings both in person and via Zoom, pay registration dues and camp fees, supply my own gear and uniforms, study and train on my own time, and travel on my own time and dime for ten months out of the year. I've not yet made it into the "big leagues". I work 100-160 games a year just like the players do and unlike players, I don't get to sit in the dugout for half the game. In a really good year, after taxes and expenses, I will net $10,000. Should that avocation pay a living wage any more than MiLB does?
Respect to the pitcher for that fastball down the pipe after the called strike.. That was VERY Classy in my opinion. :D
Looked for this comment. That was not an accident, he knew that gimme strike was bullshit and he laid one down at 95 right down the middle. Big respect
Little known fact. Players receive lifetime medical coverage after one game played in the majors. If he plays 43 games, he'll qualify for a pension starting around $34,000 a year. Hope he sticks.
Damn I gotta get to the league then ..
Who cares
Lifetime medical coverage is not true. The dodgers resigned Andrew Toles for no salary just so he could have access to their health benefits just the other week. Diagnosed schizophrenic and bipolar. They don’t provide in-house coverage, they go through a 3rd party for that. In order to qualify for the policy you must be on a team roster. But I assume the pension part is true and I hope he sticks too.
Little known fact, I was born in Canada I get lifetime health care.
@@derekcote9705 your healthcare sucks
how can you not be romantic about baseball. every kids dream right here. congrats man!

Nice to see the Bucs Draft Class of 2010 still producing big leaguers.
Great cuts by him, I hope he gets to stick around the ball club for a bit
He’s been around for awhile now.
He was batting .194 in the minors. Calm down
Probably going to be sent back to minors soon and retire after this year.
@@MrShanester117 it’s a nice story of perseverance. The guy had his dream come true. Have a heart.
@@MrShanester117 it's not about how bad or good he is it's about a guy spending 13 years in the minors waiting year after year after year to be moved up to the majors, and it finally happened he gets to be on TV, almost hit a home run his first pitch, probably got a nice contract... never give up
This guy might be a pirate, but I'm sure everyone is rooting for him. Good luck sir, and give it all you got. From a Dodger fan.
Why does no one have footage of the ump giving the strike penalty??
"Rudy, Rudy, Rudy...." :) Good for you Drew.
And his first at-bat is a pinch hit for a HOFer. 😮
This is a perfect example of why the pitch clock is insane. It ruined such a special at bat. That free strike changed the entire trajectory.
I like the new pitch clock, but seriously, the umps need to have more leeway to allow moments like this.
@@J23LA24 Moments like what? He fouled the pitch off, stepped out of the box, and then took too long to get back in.
@@YotesFan1980 moments like his first major league at bat after 13 years of waiting. Did you not watch the video? Or at least read the title?
Baseball doesn't have a clock. What you're watching here isn't baseball, it's something else. Manfred has ruined the sport.
@@J23LA24 Him being in the minors means he should've had more experience with the pitch clock though?
WOW! This is what Baseball and all sports are about! I have always respected and cheered for those who work hard and endure. There are those who are naturally gifted, but often times they do not appreciate their God given gifts and they are squandered by bad judgement. A guy like Maggi, kept his shoulder to the wheel with his nose down and just ground it out. Much respect from this Met Fan.
lol @ god
I cried. Well done Maggi!!!
He is Major legue for ever✌️✌️✌️✌️💪💪💪❤️❤️❤️
That’s so awesome. Dude will make a great coach someday
This reminds me of when Daniel Nava got the call-up from the Red Sox. It was last minute and his parents managed to get on a sold-out flight to Boston after they pleaded with the ticket agent. They arrived just in time to see their son hit a grand slam, at his first major league appearance, off of Joe Blanton of the Phillies at Fenway. His parents cried. I may or may not have cried. It was something. He stayed with the Red Sox and earned himself a World Series ring in 2013.
I listened to that game, and Joe Castiglione asking Daniel before the game if he was going to swing at the first pitch. He did and went down in history as one of a small handful of MLB players to hit a grand slam on the first pitch of their major league career. His parents didn't even have time to get their luggage and went straight to Fenway. He also hit a home run to win it against KC in the first game back following the Boston Marathon bombing a few weeks later. Love these stories.
Yeah we watch baseball too.
@@dansmith338 He was also told that he was too small to play baseball. He accepted a minor-league deal and proved himself.
Very cool for Drew. Congrats! Another tidbit. He now shoudl have his own card in MLB the Show 23. For this special moment though, they really need to get him a Topps Now card in the game.
So awesome- love this
0:54 if only it was fair 😭.
Welcome to the MLB Drew!
The umpires can't do their damn jobs, but the league is worried about how long a game takes? Maybe they should knock off on some of the damn TV ads. There's twice as many ads now than when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. The announcers snuck in ads between pitches
He truly loves this sport
As a journeyman minor leaguer, he should have been familiar with the pitch clock rule, but by all means: Soak it in, dude. Soak it all in. You got a nice swing and got some good hacks in.
The pitch clock strike didn't affect the outcome of the AB. He'd have had two strikes after those hard hit foul balls anyhow. Hope he gets to stick around for more than a cup of coffee in the Bigs.
Mad Respect from this Mets fan..
Let’s go Maggi,keep going!!
Classy guy. If you ever played baseball in your life you know how special certain moments are.. This is one of those 1 in a million moments that everyone watching hoped you hit a homer... Congrats on being a major leaguer

He followed the same tips & techniques that won back to back to back AAU national championships.
So glad he got his chance.
Chasing dreams helps you accomplish things and love yourself, be yourself. You don't have to accomplish the dreams literally, what is it that Bruce Lee said? Something about plateaus...that reaching for something greater lands you somewhere you're going to be thrilled to be at. I hope the Pirates have injury issues and this dude gets to play some ball and get some hits in.
a fucking clock- the bud lite move of the mlb-
Trouble with the curve. Still awesome.
How can anyone actually think the pitch clock makes this game watchable?

A fraction of a second from a home run too

How long do you have as a hitter to get back in the box before they call an automatic strike on you?
Batter needs to be in box and “alert” to the pitcher by the :08 second mark
Sounds like Jeff Bridges haha

Future trivia question answer….who was the first player to get a pitch clock violation in their major league debut. Yiiiiikes
2:50 the answer is: "it's like I'm jacked up on Mt. Dew"
welcome to the show, meat
God i hate these new rules! The guy watches his almost a homerun get fought over by fans and half his time for the next pitch is finished before the previous pitch has resolved in the batters mind. If it would have been a homerun we would have enough time to watch him circle the bases and at most a brief shot of the bat connecting with the ball, or the ball clearing the wall, but not both. It's the 2nd pitch of the at bat before we get to see the whole play again. If the third out happens on that first pitch we don't get to see the replays until the next inning. These timing rules need to be tweaked to stop messing up the natural flow of the game on television. We need more time between batters at the very least. We need an extra 5 seconds on the clock after a foul ball.
13 years. It’s damn shameful a club can steal 13 years away from someone like that. Either draft who you need and want like the nfl or nba or have a 2-3 year farm max.
13 years making crumbs. Props to this guy for sticking it out. Goes to show the talent level to get to the league.
dude he was drafted in the 15th round. More than half of the players that were drafted never played in the big leagues. He should be thankful the team gave him this chance anyway.
@@Kevin_W1997 I wonder if he getsw paid the major league minimum now that he is on the roster ?? I Know in 2022 the major league minimum was $700,000.

Typo fixed, thanks for pointing out.
This is really a special video.
Is that Thanos? Lol
After 13 years you'd think the guy would have something interesting to say in the interview.
I get your point. He appeared to be in awe of the situation.
Glad he fouled off that first 0-2 pitch to get to a true 0-2 count. Would have been a shame if he only had a two pitch at bat. Can’t hate on the ump enforcing the rules though.
Crash Davis comes to mind.
That would have been something if the homer was fair 😂
IMO the pitch clock is a joke and a really stupid rule but if they're going to keep it around at least make it 5 seconds longer cuz of moments like this
🏴☠️
and he’s right back to the minors
Right on!!
Good on the pitcher for trying to grease a couple in there for him to make a moment. Unfortunately there is a reason he has been in the minors for 10 years
pitch clock ruins another special moment in baseball.

Lack of hustle on that run to first. Kids these days
Then everyone is a kid.. every MLB player on a drop third that is blocked in front doesn’t sprint all the way down all the way.. they may have quick feet at first but when they see the block, they put the jog on
What? Do you even watch baseball? No one “hustles” to 1st on the dropped 3rd strike. 😂😂😂
Damn could u even make a living off minor league
I don’t think so, they play hoping to one day hit the big league lottery I suppose.
Minimum salaries will increase from $4,800 to $19,800 a season for rookie ball; $11,000 to $27,300 at High Class A; $13,800 to $27,300 at Class AA; and $17,500 to $45,800 at Class AAA, according to The Associated Press.

Not true,
The Ump ignored the pitch clock violation when you came to the plate - good on him! then all of a sudden - you figure you have to start styling and profiling - stepping out, messing with your batting gloves - styling and profiling - - hey dude - its the majors - obviously you were not ready for the bigs!
Right. One pitch clock violation leads you to that conclusion. Cuz no other player in the MLB has had a violation at all this season 😒.
@@someoneyoudontknow7705 watch the video - after every pitch = steps out messes with his hitting gloves etc. one pitch clock violation in the 5 pitches he saw - thats a pfretty high % - right? 20% of the pitches he saw hes getting a violation!
