  • Hi there!
I was very excited to make the place ready for summer to be able to really enjoy it. There wasnt a lot of free time for it and there are still a lot of changes to make but I enjoyed making these changes so far.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions that you may have in mind!

Matt's face when he walks up is the classic picture of every husband walking up and catching us after our amazon packages arrive. "What's that? And that? And that?" Golden. The secret is you have to just casually blend the stuff in with the landscape as to not draw attention to it all at once then when he asks "When did we get those?" "Oh a long time ago."

I love this household. Matt does EVERYTHING in riding gear, Jesse is always getting distracted from work by beautiful things, Matt MUST mow the lawn relentlessly, Jesse tries to contribute by hand-fertilizing the grass, Matt is trying to get Jesse to do ANYTHING, Jesse creates jobs like decorating the gazebo and buying an unnecessary apple tree. They both have a huge yard and are truly puzzled about where they can fit the apple tree! Caution Jesse, that plant with the red leaves is a burning bush euphorbia and can become very invasive to your garden!!! It can grow 2x2 meters or more.

Your choice of the rectangular and square items on the round patio is geometrically interesting and carries on with the arbors square shape. I think you wanted to make a peaceful area to relax that was comfortable like a living room but outside, like taking a bit of the inside space outside.
    Suggestions:
You could hang the lights at the poles you won't hit your head on them and they will partly obscure the arbor poles. Or hang the lights in the middle of the arbor over the table.
If the arbor lets the furniture get wet in the rain you may want covers for the chairs so you can simply remove the covers and the seats aren't wet and no leaves or lawn clippings are in the chairs.
If you are going to put the apple tree in a large pot you might want to get a plant dolly (flat cart with wheels made for plants) so that you can easily rearrange the trees location in your patio. That way as it grows you can move it so that it doesn't block the view of the outer gardens.

Hi Jesse, I'm a new subscriber! I found your site from Matt. I have some advise for ya. You need to get a Landscaper if you want to add some proper decor for your property and a decorator. Don't buy things that just suit your fancy, as they might not fit in with the outdoor look of the property. You also seem to hurt yourself a lot, so I recommend letting the professionals do it for you. Matt likes to work and keep busy, and seems to really enjoy mowing, cleaning, and taking excellent care of the horses. It eases the stress of his and your very busy lives. Hi Guys ! You need to get rid of as many flies as you can. And mosquitos ? some ideas.
1.) put a fountain or water circulator in all standing water . Add mosquito-eating fish 2.) Have you ever thought of POURED rubber floors for your stalls ? Fantastic for horse's feet and to lie down. Cuts waaay back on stable work, just shovel manure into wheelbarrow, put kitty litter on wet spots to absorb urine. You can cover wheelbarrow until full, cart manure/kitty litter to place off property to cut down on flies. (maybe a town-owned compost pile in the country ?) No straw/manure piles to breed flies ! Self waterers in stalls are terrific, again, no standing water. Good luck. Your horses are beautiful and so is your property !

    Fly control idea.
1.) Chickens are great. When feeding chickens spread their feed over horse paddies and let the chickens eat the larvae.
2.) Fly control with no chemicals. A large frying pan filled half way with water. Next, float vegetable oil on the water. Next, hang a spot light about 6" above the oil, and turn the light on at night. This also helps to control moths and other flying pests.
3.) Place bat boxes around the property. Bats are marvelous for controlling insects. A Bonus is Bat guano. Bat droppings fertiliser is prized by gardeners and it brings high prices.
These are some safe ways to control flies and insects.
I look forward to watching each of your videos. It is sanity time for me. I would love to have you as a neighbor.

You might want to consider getting a gardener in a couple of hours a week it is amazing how much they can do in just a couple of hours because they have the right tools and knowledge, even low maintenance gardens need some work and if you don't know what you are doing it can be hard. Plant the apple tree in the ground somewhere away from well travelled / used areas because the apples will fall off and attract insects especially wasps.
I noticed some of your shrubs need cutting back and some are dead and need digging up or replacing and there are much easier ways to fertilise and weed the lawn there are products out there that you water in that will feed the grass but kill the weeds. Any reputable gardening centre will be able to tell you which one to use. Likewise when you buy plants at garden centres they should be able to give you advice on how and when to plant and care.

Water just before dark, that way the cooler temperature won't instantly suck all the moisture up but instead most of it will go into the ground. If you are watering that patch holding a water hose it's going to take a lot of time. Better to have spray system you can stick in the ground and move that around. A patch that big will take 2 - 3 hours.

You do make me smile Jesse. I really enjoy your enthusiasm for life and willingness to learn and try new things. I think that a heron might have eaten your goldfish they do tend to do that.

Maybe you could get your horses one of those brushes that automatically rotates when the horses push on it...for getting all the scratching they want and to get the flies off.

I actually really like ' the back of a painting' with the candles on the table! And adding lights would be great for warm nights in fall when it gets dark earlier.

We live on 186 off-grid acres in Northern Arizona, USA. Flies can be a problem when free range cattle come in close to our compound. We have placed magnetic closure screens (AMAZON) on all the doors as 2ndary barrier (main door, security screen & magnetic screen) against flying insects. They close immediately behind you so insects have a hard time getting in. We haven’t had 1 fly breach the door since we placed the magnetic screens. An occasional moth gets in but they are the only (& seldom) interlopers.

Free ranging chickens will help your struggles with flies, they eat fly eggs from the manure. They will also fertilize your fields for grass growing.

The bush with the scaly branches will get huge, so don't put it too close to anything else, it's pretty invasive!

Also, the amount of flies was like watching a horror movie. The stagnant water of your pond is probably helping with this. Otherwise great video! Your home and garden is beautiful! I love your outdoor sitting area.

Jesse you've done a great job with the outdoor summer snug now just get a few more accessories like few big silver and a few big white cushions, the lantern looked great why not hang one on each side so four in total and then all the way round at the top of the lantern height string some solar fairy lights and for on the wooden try on the table buy three big candles each a different height and place them in the centre then get some silver glass stones and place all around the big white candles and in the evening when they are lit the light will twinkle from the glass stones and the lamps lit with the fairy lights on will look magical!! A couple of big snuggly blankets might be an idea for the chilly summer evenings, also the staked lanterns are great you just need citronella oil to burn in them to keep mosquitos away. Great job though guys you're home looks beautiful, much love Gem.xxxx
