Thank you Misty! I was watching the recap video and I was coming here to type it ♥
It's in the description though..
Thank you !!!!
Thank you
Thank you so very much.
It seriously warms my heart whenever I see you spend time with Benjamin. I can't imagine how happy they will be in the future for all those wonderful, child memories you gifted them! I thankfully also have fond memories of my mother when I was young, running around in the garden helping her out! I remember gathering yellow daisies for her so we could dye our eggs in easter! Or sitting hours long outside enjoying the gorgeous show (and smell) of our sweatpeas, which were her favourite flowers. God bless you Laura, you are doing an absolute wonderful job raising them both! Wish the world had more people like you and Aaron! 🤍
I went to college with Aaron in Southern California, he had to be 18 or 19 back then, we set up A.V. equipment for a conference center together...funny to come across him on this channel.
Seems like he was always into visual presentation. :-) He’s one heck of a film maker.
I was told years ago where the name "Serviceberry" came from. Back in the day when people couldn't bury their dead because the ground was frozen, they would watch to see when the serviceberry bloomed. They would know then the ground was thawed enough, they could have a service for their loved one.
I heard the same and thought itbwas interesting. They made pies out of the berries for the service. 😊
And as to the name Shad bush or Shad blow, the ripening of the fruit told folks back in the day that the Shad fish were running, and producing their eggs, which people would cook, both fish and eggs!
@@didisinclair3605 So interesting!
@@kristinastoltzfus6032 It would’ve been impossible to make pies out of the “berries” if the ground just thawed and the tree is barely in bloom.
Apparently this story isn’t true but it’s a nice tale.
I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada (zone 3) so we call them Saskatoon berries here! I have them along my driveway between mine and my neighbour's house. They're the bush variety and get quite big. The birds get the berries from the top of the bush that I can't reach and I get the rest. We have an understanding 😂
Benjamin never ceases to amaze me! So capable in the kitchen for a child of his age! Maybe a chef in training?
I agree! I was amazed at his knife skills 🤣
This boy is going to be well rounded diverse man someday🤗🥰
He looks so excited when helping his mom. Future chef :D
I loved seeing Laura show Benjamin how to level the salt before adding and then to see him make the connection and do the same thing when she handed him the spoon of cinnamon was priceless. Their brains are like little sponges at that age. You’re a great mama, Laura, letting Benjamin get involved and have some autonomy to experience things without you controlling every second of that experience. I’m always super impressed by that.
I noticed that too! Like level this, Mama! Lol! 😂
Five minutes after this video ends and I'm out for the first time harvesting the serviceberries off the tree I planted eight years ago, while the birds are in the branches chewing me out! Thanks Laura!
So today was the first time I'm eating the service berries from my 2 trees that the previous owners planted. I had no idea....
My children gifted me a service berry tree for Mother’s Day, many years ago. I have always let the birds have their fill, but I think I’ll try your recipe, Laura. Thanks for continuing to enlighten us with new ideas! The added bonus is sweet Benjamin footage!🤗🫐
I’m just in awe that Benjamin’s white shirt is completely clean after eating those berries! My 3 yr old would’ve tie dyed that shirt 😆
Right 😆 my 8yr old just told me no mommy let’s buy the black shirt, white gets too dirty 🤪
Just like his mom
@Minnie Marie 😱
Laura, I have had at least one serviceberry in my yard for over twenty five years. The tree is everything you said it is in your video. Ironically, it wasn’t until yesterday when I was trimming branches that I decided to taste one. I didn’t stop at one! What a treat. The birds will now have some competition. 😉 Thank you for sharing.
I did my best to pause and transcribe the recipe for those interested:
Ingredients:
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 tbsp flax seed
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1/2 cup honey
1/2 mashed banana
1 chopped apple
1 cup Greek yogurt
1/2 cup berries
Topping:
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tbsp wheat flour
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp flax seed
2 tbsp cold butter
Directions:
Combine dry ingredients
Beat egg in separate bowl with honey yogurt and banana. Combine with dry ingredients.
Fold in berries & apple. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full
Make topping by combining ingredients and cutting in butter. Sprinkle over unbaked muffins
Bake at 400f for 18-20 mins. Let cool 5 min before removing
Thank you!
Thanks!!!
Thanks. I was searching for it too.
Laura started off saying service berries are underrated. Then she showed us this glorious recipe and told us to grow one ourselves. Now growers won’t be able to keep up with demand.
So true!😆😂😩
I'm already searching!

I enjoy all your videos. Don’t mind the cooking/baking at all. You are using ingredients from the garden. It is a good example of why people should grow edibles. Benjamin is beyond adorable. You are such a good mom.
Aaron’s question and the look on his face cracked me up when he asked, “ is this healthy?” 😂My son does the same thing whenever he eats something I bake. I love this video and hope for more baking with Benjamin videos! I look forward to baking with my grandson. ❤️🥰🧑🏻🍳
Oh Karen what a great idea for a channel! "Baking with Benjamin"!
I love how Benjamin just took the entire basket of berries and was like "Mine" ❤🤗🤭

Benjamin is a cleaner cook than I am 🤣 I love how you spend time with your children. Picking berries the night before with Samantha Grace and today cooking with Benjamin. Thank you for sharing a bit of the same love with us 🥰
Do you have a playlist just for your edible plants in the landscape? It would be neat to have them all together (or in a compilation video). I don’t have a lot of planting space, do incorporating beautiful edibles into the landscape is a win-win!
Great idea!
I have a two year old boy named Benjamin and a brand new 8 week old Gabriel! (And a husband named Aaron!) We watched this video this morning and he immediately had us make muffins with the fruit in our garden. We have been gardening with you for over a year now and I’m so overjoyed to have found you. A dream of mine was to have a garden with my kids, and your channel got me over my fear of my yard! From everything we’ve learned from you, we’ve grown a vegetable garden, fruit containers, a cut garden, a shade garden and beautified our lawn (Thanks Aaron)! Next up is trees and perennials this fall and drip irrigation!!!! Thank you for all you both do and the way you do it.
Good Morning Garden Answer Friends. There is nothing like sitting on my screened porch, and watching Laura with a cup of coffee as the smell of freshly sprinkled Garden Tone and new rain fills the air.
😌Now this is living!😊
These grow profusely in our Ohio woodlands , so I'm excited to have a recipe to use. We also want to transplant a couple from our woods closer to the house. Second to gardening, birding is my favorite ,so this will bring more birds to our yard.😃
Hello to another Ohioian!! The heart of it all!!!
Clevelander here. Wish I had space to grow one! If the Magnolia dies, maybe a serviceberry can take it's place.
I had never heard of Serviceberry trees until I lived in Columbus Ohio. I lived in Bexley, where the governors mansion is and took a tour of the garden there one year. One of the former governors wives had undertaken a beautiful landscaping project of the grounds and had Serviceberry trees planted. They were beautiful and I made sure to plant one in my own garden when I got the chance. I highly recommend these beautiful trees.
Ahhhh Benjamin is the best little helper!! Love this kid!! 🥰
awww...benjamin is such a sweet boy, and he's also smart and very patient for his age, not to mention super cute~....gosh....not many boy his age that calm and follow instruction easily and precise too....good job both of you raising him right you guys #thumbsup
I literally cheered when Benjamin cut the whole way through the apple!! We planted an Autumn Brilliance last year and just love it.
I’ve been wondering about using true native plants versus newer better cultivars, are they as beneficial for pollinators? I would hate to have lost some native species because of my desire for the eye candy at our nurseries. Thank you!
Doug Tallamy has done some interesting research on this. In short, the native species is almost always more beneficial to the ecosystem than cultivars. Cultivars can be less attractive or less nourishing to wildlife.
Laura, I hope you don’t mind me posting this. ❤️

I'm a passionate gardening senior who has been following your channel for many years. I have taken on a volunteer project to rejuvenate the courtyard garden space in a Long Term Care home, where my 96 year old Mom-in-law has been receiving compassionate care for over two years. Today, my husband and I just delivered an Autumn Brilliance serviceberry tree that we will plant in the garden. This tree was my #1 choice for a particular space - I discovered your video after buying the tree. I am sharing the muffin recipe with the Life Enrichment staff at the home,. When the tree matures enough, Residents and Staff can bake muffins together with the berries from their own tree. Your videos have been a big part of inspiring me to do this garden renovation. I am so happy to give back in this way, it brings me such joy. Thanks for all you do, and best wishes to your lovely family. Marcia Blom, Ottawa, Ontario Canada
This video brought a tear to my eye, remembering baking with my mom as a little kid. She is no longer here but the memories live forever. Thank you for sharing yours with all of us. ❤️
Same here... Mine was with my Polish grandma.
Watching Benjamin helping is a balm for the soul. I love it when he saw the bowl of berries. Priceless!
Oh my gosh, Benjamin is simply adorable! I love how he sees the berries and his first response is a kind "thank you!" You are doing a great job with him, he is the sweetest!
Love these types of videos! Course I like them all .😂 I appreciate the clean, family friendly content. Also love your mom!

I just love the patience you have with your son! I had three babies all under the age of five and I was so busy, but I regret not spending more time with each of them. Bless you Laura, you and Aaron are wonderful parents💚🙃
Am i the only one who said "Good Job Buddy" like Laura does, after he finally cuts the apple. Love how he's so helpful.
Benjamin’s face while cutting the apple, priceless!! So fun, this video has my heart!!
I grew up eating these berries in Russia. They were always so welcome in early summer. I love the look of the tree and have enjoyed it in my yard in Virginia for years. Unfortunately they are not disease resistant on the East Coast. Rust is what affected my tree and the berries are inedible. Thank you for the video! I am glad you are sharing this tree with so many people.

Shad-blow because they bloom at the same time as the shad run, that is, when the shad swim up the river to spawn. When I lived in eastern NC, shad row was an early spring treat. (I have an amelanchior near the back of my house here in upstate NY- one of the first things I planted - and you're right that it gives so much pleasure year round.)

What is it about watching kids cook... It's the sweetest thing EVER! Laura, Benjamin is one lucky little man to have parents with the love and patience to let him experience the simple pleasures that life can offer. ❤️🥰
Omg, Samantha Grace is truly a smiley, happy baby. Her smiles make the whole scene vibrant, much like her brother's. I feel grateful to be able to follow your sweet family in gardening and life. If only I could grow berries too, but that's not possible where I live. Wish you all a great weekend ❤️.
Benjamin's expressions are so precious. He looked so serious and worried when you handed him the egg in the chicken coop.☺️
At the nursery where I used to work, we sold so many Serviceberry trees, single and multi- trunk. It's wonderful understory tree at the edge of the woods here - NW Indiana. We have many that grow natively, too. Here, it's often called Shadblow, because it fruits in June "when the shad (a northern fish) run. Loved watching Benjamin help you bake, adorable.
We just planted two Robin Hill Serviceberry trees. We planted them to feed the birds. I love feeding and watching my birds. Very interesting to learn I can pick some to eat also. I will be looking for the shorter serviceberry now.
We just got 2 of them and so excited to harvest a few soon. Omg your son is adorable!! Baking with the kids is so fun

Good Night from the land of Australia. Never heard of these, they look delicious though.

Ok, best video ever. I follow you daily and have learned so much about gardening, but this one warmed my heart and soul. Benjamin’s talent and willingness to learn in the kitchen is amazing for someone so young. And Laura, you have endless patience teaching and explaining when we know it would have taken half the time to just measure and mix yourself. Does Samantha Grace always have a smile on her face? What a beautiful, happy baby. Thank you for sharing these priceless moments of your life. I want to try that recipe now.
We have been feasting on service berries from our tree for a couple of weeks! We pruned it into multi-trunk form and it is a really pretty little tree. Usually, the birds eat them all, but this year we netted the tree. I just took the net off to use elsewhere. I think I will go out and pick some to dry before the birds get them. Wish me luck!
It's a good idea to plant another one for the wildlife since that was a food source for them and few people have these conservation plants like serviceberries in their yards anymore.
Aaron is such a guy. “Is it healthy”? I was waiting for him to spit it out! Benjamin is so good at helping with whatever needs to be done. Such fun watching him learn to bake. Great information about service berries. I’ve never heard of them so maybe it’s not a big thing here in the south. At least not in my area. I’d love to grow one!

I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - here we obviously call service berries Saskatoon berries :) so good in pies, jams and served with cake and ice cream
Native Amelanchier (we call shadbush) are prized here in New England for all the reasons you mentioned, disease + pest resistance, and their unique 'wiggly' form. I agree: WAY under appreciated tree!!
I was told the name shadbush came from the trees blooming when shad (fish) are running.
It just brings tears to my eyes to watch you with your son. When he was helping you plant, it reminded me of my mom and me. And then to watch you bake together, lost it! My boys are 27 and 30....enjoy every moment. My mom taught me the love of the earth. She is 83 this year and still wants to garden! So my brother and I made some raised planter boxes for her. Benjamin is the sweetest cutest little boy! My kids love Garden Answer videos, but its a whole another level of excitement when they see Benjamin and Samantha Grace.
I watched this, then went on a walk and found 10 serviceberry trees in our school yard! We picked them and made muffins!
As you were describing them I thought, they sound a lot like Saskatoon berries. Then you mentioned they were called that. Yes, Saskatoon berries are great, to me they have an almond taste to them. Come visit Calgary, Alberta we have a farm named after them.
Saskatoon berry picking wild berries is so fun! Also Saskatoon berry pie is the best!!!! Lethbridge AB here.
I was impressed when she said Saskatoon berries since that is what I call them in Toronto. Mine are just ripening now too. They are delicious.
We always make a trip there every summer! I remember foraging for them and making tarts as a kid:
We had Saskatoon berries growing wild in northern Alberta which I think is a zone 2 or 3. Used to go Saskatoon berry picking all the time. Saskatoon pies are the best!
Saskatoon is a city in Saskatchewan, Canada. We have lots of Saskatoon bushes in Canada. Not sure if they are the same as a service berry though.
This video is so sweet! What a great way to start the day!
Love watching you having fun with Benjamin. He is getting so big. He seems like he is a really funny kid!
I'm excited to learn that they can be a zone 9, a lot of varieties of fruit trees that y'all have up there only go to a 7 or 8 so I have to find different varieties or just go without. So it's cool to know I could have a the same tree, now to find the space.....
I planted a serviceberry last fall, this spring it bloom and had berries, then the farmer across from me nailed it with some Roundup spray on a windy day spraying his field. I'm so sad I had wanted one for years. I guess I will start over and plant it in the backyard this time. They are a beautiful tree, I love it when a flock of cedar waxwing has lunch, in the serviceberry at work, a beautiful sight.
Dang!! That’s horrible!! Some people are just not responsible with that spray!! I’d say the farmer owes you a new bush!🤨
@@tamararobinson2069 I don't think the young farmers realize what spray can do to plants and humans. I know a lot of famers that have died from cancer due to these herbicides.

I'm one of those people who've never heard of these berries and reading up on them they are very high in Vitamin c!Most fruits have more pectin in them if they are just underipe which is good for jam making !
I thought serviceberries are inedible to humans and are just for birds or other foraging animals....we don't have it here in our place..
The jam is absolutely delicious!

I love my serviceberry-it’s the first thing I ever planted 20 years ago. A couple weeks ago we were outside and I was taking to my husband about how the berries were almost ripe and the birds would be fighting over them soon. He asked how I knew they were almost ripe and I popped one in my mouth and said, “not bad!” He almost had a heart attack that I ate a potentially wild and poisonous berry 😂. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Now that I know what you can do with them, the birds probably will only get a few next year!
