The male lead actor and the female lead who you saw in the first scene met long time ago and fell in love. But he wants to travel the world and work too so he left her that time. They again meet for their bestfriend's wedding and they again get close and still in love with each other but he again wants to leave for his dreams. This is the context of this song as they attend friend's wedding and this shows the emotional ride of both of them while they attend it.
He actually didn't fell for her in the first half of the movie, at least he didn't realize!

Actually, the guy is an adventure freak while the girl wants to lead a normal life. She is a doctor, owns a clinic and thus can't be with him.
In the first scene, he proposes her. She asks him to compromise. She asked if he could visit her twice a year and settle down with her after some time but he couldn't agree to which she laughs and rejects him.
They are attending their mutual friend's wedding and the guy has to leave for Paris the same night of wedding for his dream job but the girl was completely avoiding him and so he leaves.
He is sitting on the airport rethinking everything and suddenly thought to go home, missing his late father. His step mother was the only one living here and thus he had never paid a visit but he thinks to do so this time and ran his way home.
Reaching there, he cried and his mother comforted him and that's where he understands that right now his love is more important for him and so he proposes the girl in new year's Eve.
