Got any suggestions on where I should go next? Let me know!!!
Welcome to iTripReport's flight reviews, which I focus on reviewing both the soft product and hard product of airlines around the globe. I strive to give you guys a first person perspective of different aspects of the flight. Including the ground service, onboard service, and those views that come with the flight. As you can see, I record quite a lot of the experience to make sure I record what you want to watch. As always, thank you so much for watching.
I worked for the original Mexicana de aviacion based in LAX in the 70s and early 80s. It was a good airline, great service and very dependable. They had other issues which were internal, but their product was excellent.
Golden Aztec Service! With free champagne, beer, and steak dinners. They were great!
That was in economy. Don't forget the fruit and cheese course at the end of the meal.
Mexicana was the best airline I ever been on in 1989.
You might have known my uncle. He was a Captain for Mexicana back in the 70s and 80s.
To be honest this version has nothing to do with the original Mexicana de Aviacion nor with any of its past iterations.
Mexicana de Aviacion always did great success when was manage.by the State but ironically the private sector bankrupted the Company every single time it landed in their hands so they proofed total ineptitude so there is not much to worry now that the state ones again take control of this iconic company.as many Mexicans probably will agree.
My mom worked as a ticket reservation agent when Mexicana had only a few passengers. Then she moved to Los Angeles where she finished her career there, working over 50 years for Mexicana. Then they moved offices to San Antonio. She retirement months before
The new Mexico City airport reminds me of the Haneda/Narita controversy. Similar to what Mexico did with their new airport (far outside the city center), the Japanese effectively banned all transpacific international flights to Haneda until 2010.
Hopefully the Mexico case didn’t cause displacements of residents?
@@Blank00 it was a military airport prior to
The same that thought looks like Narita!
Difference is that Tokyo sits over the large Kanto plain where it's relatively easy to build two airports, Mexico City is different, is in a valley surrounded by high elevations like the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes, the new airport is in a northern valley and has disturbed the flying schematics for the original airport. Overall it will not resolve the large problem of the overcrowded Mexico Valley airspace
@@sebastiannegrete9659 so... Fuji Mount is a valley
The true is that Mexicana is using former 737 from de Air Force ( 2 737-800 and 1 737-300 ), cause the leaser can’t found the 737 required by Mexicana, in this year the plan is that Mexicana will have 10 737, and return the planes that are using by now, the 3 737 to the Air Force and the 2 E145 to TAR
What is the problem with government owned airlines? Many in the world are. Like Aerolíneas Argentinas, Royal Air Maroc, TAP, Qatar etc. they are all respectable.
Es un fachito mamón.
This is so interesting. My uncle was a captain for Mexicana for many years, back in the early 70s. I remember flying with him in the cockpit back when I was a little kid. His son and daughter also became part of the flight crew when they grew up. So sad to see what they've done to the once great airline- Mexicana!!!
This airport was rushed and built on the cheap just like the Tren Maya. And the inaugural launch was even more embarrassing when the first train was FIVE HOURS LATE making the president of Mexico look like the incompetent leader that he is. Mexico deserves much better!
The president chopped thousands of trees in the rivera maya all to build the damm train
At least we have a national airline!!
Do you??
@@migueljauregui8884 Bro it's Volaris Viva aereo bus aereo México and mexicana de aviación
Very interesting flight! I know someone who flew Mexicana back in 2008 and said that they had a total of 4 flights in a trip all of which flights were delayed and they had no announcement about the delay
I think the new airlines is great. It's very nostalgic.
And more airlines means more competition, which only benefits the consumer.
I am not a big fan of recycling the names of once great legacy airlines. Having grown up with the original Frontier Airlines, it still bugs me to see the name associated with a ULCC. I guess I kind of feel the same about Mexicana.
Shingon... Una vueltecita a MID
I find it sad that Mexico City, one of the great cities of the world, will not have a world-class airport thanks to you know who. I actually kind of like the livery. Great video!
There was going to be an amazing one
It's a pity Mexico had to loose green areas and hills in order to built and refill the ground of that airport full of corruption. It was promised as a HUB and three years later they gave us a sh*t with no single runway back.
Mexicans should have an airport they’re proud of. When visitors come into the country they should be wow by a flagship airport. Glad Tulum is getting a new airport, as a visitor myself I haven’t been impressed by airports in Mexico. For an economy the size and population of Mexico in Latin America it’s a shame.
Aún sigues llorando por el NAIM? Ya superalo!!
tu que gato, aprende a hablar ingles.@@rafaelv.o.7083
The Tulum airport looks brand new--when did it open? Did you return to Santa Lucia even with that 5hr delay? You would think that with over an hour's worth of ground delay at Merida, the flight crew would have sense enough to let the passengers get off to stretch their legs, get some food (yes, Emiliano!) and be near the gate area to listen for a departure announcement--how does one get to Santa Lucia from central Mexico City?
Tulum airport opened 12/23
I personally find the paint scheme appealing. I think using the state colors of green, red and white is a great idea. (Its weird to me that AM uses blue instead of green)
Wow, forcing airlines to use a chosen airport, sounds like a dictator, interesting.

You forgot to add...the other airport was being built on a 'dry' lake, and was already sinking...a lake that is historically, culturally, and environmentally important, which is now gonna be a protected area and a park...one side reporting at its best 😂
Fun fact.
Did you forget how Mexico City was originally built in a dry lake? How has that turned out?
Guess what, the Santa Lucia airport is also built on a "dry" lake, the Laguna de Zumpango is one of the few natural bodies of water left from the Lago de Texcoco. Doing a little research before posting doesn't hurt. Ignorance at its best may I say.
@@ITripReport Pretty bad, it's sinking at an alarming rate.
Wasn’t this the same president that wanted to give up his Dreamliner and fly with the people?
yup! He did a lottery for it, pocketed the money, and sold it to Tajikistan. He "flew with the people" for show and virtue signaling for about a year, and now once again he's flying private.

The new airport is much better than the current one in Mexico City which I have to do a connection in later this month; not looking forward to that. Quick question if you don't mind: how do you and other content creators find all these inaugural flights or the last flight of a particular airplane? Dedicated research or because you fly so much airlines reach out to you? Of course if that is too much of a personal question, you don't need to answer that - just my curious nature:)
It’s dedicated research 😅. Unfortunately I’m still not big enough to get airlines to reach out to me. So I do a mixture of research on social media, forums, news etc
I also think that the AIFA is better than the current AICM in terms of the overall look, but the location really hurts its potential.
@@ITripReport first, thank you for answering:) I think you are certainly well known within the aviation content creator community so one never knows, down the road you could be given a heads-up on something new directly from an airline. Also, Happy New Year!
@@marko_ys that certainly makes sense. Of course, I was only thinking selfishly from a connecting point-of-view:)
@@RoamingRobinToronto Oh no yeah, the current state of AICM is depressing, I think its insulting that AICM is the first impression foreigners get of Mexico city. You are right, AIFA is beautiful compared to AICM, there is no denying that, but the location and poor planning are going to make that airport an inconvenient option.
Nice way to spend the day!
I remember Mexicana so well as a kid. This…. This is not Mexicana at all. I also blame the times we live in that made flying so cheap and I don’t just mean that moneywise. Flying used to be like luxury and full service. Mexicana was one of the best back in the day. We will never see that again.
I first flew on Mexicana as a passenger in 1982 with a fiesta Fair you can fly anywhere you wanted as an airline employee for about $20 the service was great and the drinks were free. I know live in San Carlos in Sonora and hopefully the new government airline will resume some air service here because we really need it. Customs is also available here GYM airport for travel to anywhere like Canada and the USA
I would have liked to see a map showing all three airports, the old, new and unbuilt. Great report tho! Thanks!
It wasn't unbuilt. It was halted and torn down to a large extent.
As a Dane, (married to a Mexican) I was very saddened to know about the cancellation of the original CDMX airport project, which would have been stunning, and even more stunned of how the current president has turned out to govern this magnificent country. You deserve better. Cheers from Denmark, thx for the great reports.
The cancelled airport was being built on a swamp, it was all unevenly sinking, it would have cost us millions upon millions to maintain. I am glad it was cancelled. The project was also riddled with corruption, the government made a vote to keep building it or stop it, the majority of Mexicans voted against it.👍🏻

Thanks, Emilio! I was really looking good forward to this video and finally got to see it.
I traveled on Mexicana last week , polite personnel and comfortable service
You must be joking with that 40% completed NAICM. A runway painted over the ground (three years later) has nothing to do with a full built and equipped one. That "marvelous airport" (and full of corruption) only existed in renders.
I wonder if they’ll end up taking the place of Interjet? But since I live only a few minutes away from MEX, I can’t imagine going all the way out to NLU since MEX is so convenient in spite of its capacity issues
I live in Leon, but having been to parts of Mexico that you have to cross to get to NLU, I don't think many would want to take the risk, not only that but also due to price. I was so thankful that they had a nonstop BJX-NLU so I didn't have to cross the entire city to make it on this flight.
@@ITripReport For those complaining that the Felipe Ángeles International Airport is far from Mexico City center, I would like to remind everyone that the suburban train from Buenavista will reach the airport in a very near future.
@@gabrielinfantecarrillo4769 there is a MexiBus (similar to the Metrobus in CDMX) that runs from NLU to Cuidad Azteca in Ecatepec, and from there you can take Linea B of the CDMX Metro to coincidentally enough Buenavista. To get to Centro you can get off at Garibaldi and take Linea 8 one stop south to Bellas Artes

I actually didn't know that mexicana would restart operations. Not gonna lie but their new livery is better than the old one.
Jesus... That new airport does look like a refined Bus Terminal...
i actually really like the livery of mexicana compared to other mexican airlines such as volaris and aeromexico. it looks new and modern in my opinion. i hope i get a chance to fly with them sometime!
It’s not new or modern. It’s based on the 1970’s livery.
@@Bernardo_ng1994 it's timeless, therefore for other people who aren't used to it it feels modern.
It's Mexicana in name only. It's a government run airline using an old established name that people recognize to purposely confuse people to think it's the rebirth of the original. It's not. The government did this because no real airlines want to use this airport. It's a joke.
I would love another full service airline in Mexico
I would too, this unfortunately, will turn into a ULCC.
A full service airline represents a lot of cost for the airline, and for domestic flights is not worth it due to the fact that the flights are very short. For international flights a full service it’s worth it. As far as I know Mexicana does offer drinks and snacks as Interjet did, something that no other low coast airlines such as Volaris and Viva Aerobús, you have to pay for drinks and snacks. Aeromexico, which is not a low cost airlines, on its domestic flight they offer drinks and snacks.
No inflight entertainment, how this airline gonna prosper? I get the ultra low cost carrier part. If they want to build a good profit margin gotta give the customers what they want. To compete with the bigger carriers like Aeromexico they got a lot of stepping up to do
Allegiant 2.0
As a Mexican citizen I am happy proud and excited about this Airline, some people don't know that Mexicana is one of the oldest airlines in the world, and I am so happy to see the name of Mexicana up in the air again
In name only. It's not Mexicana. It's a government run airline to try and cover up the fact that real airlines don't want to use it. What a sad joke. Mexico deserves better.
@mrxman581 whether you like it or not the name is Mexicana, and thanks to the current government is back in the air again.
The private sector turned their back to mexicana and they were responsible for Mexicana's bankruptcy.
I am glad things are different is going to be the only way to make this company successful.
I understand the controversy with the previous airport being built but i do think it was erroneous to cancel it almost halfway through, i think in that regard AMLO failed. Hopefully they get mass transit built soon to the new airport.
Do they have more NexGen Transaero planes or just this one?

Just to be clear... the new airport expected to be built in the early 2000's was not the same that started building in 2015.
The one that wanted to build in the 2000's was cancelled because mexican police hit and rapped women from a small town and the situation went out of hands for the government.

@@ITripReport This new "Mexicana" is just a military run state airline that was launched with no clear business plan just to try to solve the huge failure the new Mexico city secondary airport has been. Overall it will just be either an airline that will have operate with losses and the money of the Mexican taxpayers will be used to keep it going or it makes a mediocre profit that will all be kept by the Mexican army.

I assume and could be wrong. But were the majority of the passengers from Mexico? Is it customary to applaud taking off, or was this just because it is a new flight? It did not look foggy from the air. Are the two airports the original landing and the actual landing airport far from each other? I am never sure why a government wants to enter the airline business. perhaps the ego of the current president. Did he not rush train into action this year also? I enjoy your videos.
The clapping was due to the nature of this being the inaugural flight, which I consider normal for these kinds of flights.
The original and diversion airport ended up being 30 minute flight time from each other, while the other aircraft that diverted did so to an airport 5-10 minutes away.
And yeah, Tulum and Santa Lucia airport were both rushed, as was this airline and the new train. While the potential for all these projects were huge, the lack of detail and and proper design/preparation for all of them caused them to become just another joke
Mexicans don’t clap during takeoff, these people are mostly “chairos”, (goverment loving people that cheer and applaud everything the president does, even if it’s wrong or illegal) Mexican law prohibits the army to get involved on activities not related to their defense force nature, it also prohibits airport concessionaires to run airlines, not to mention unfair competition as it isn’t clear this airline is paying taxes and fuel properly, to make matters worst, current president wants to disappear the autonomous government public information bureau which could disclose the shadowy events that lead up to the creation and operation of this airline
Interesting! Game changer for Mexican aviation for sure
Don't think I will try that carrier!
Oh no now this makes me fear for the supposed return of interjet, if it ever returns anyways, will it keep the same Y150/Y162 or will they change to Y180
edit: still don’t think they’ll return but wow the status of Latin American aviation is horrific and disappointing
I doubt interjet will ever return, and if it does, it'll be a shadow of what it once was. They in my opinion, were the best low cost carrier in south america, and aside from Azul, the low cost carrier model in south america is so bland and basic. But unfortunately, it dominates the region
@@ITripReport that’s what I was thinking, the del valle family is certainly… a case, and I’ll leave it at that. If they can’t get basic orthography right, what are the odds of them being able to bring back an airline?
AMLO should've kept the original airport project going, maybe if so just cancel some private sector corrupted contracts and use the SEDENA to finish it, just as he did Santa Lucia. it was a much closer location and was way nicer!. AMLO , instead should've focused on his energy in his other projects, such as Tren Maya, Itsmo, etc. And instead of opening Mexicana at FAM's expense, he should've have re-opened passenger subsidized train service in the entire country. I think his refineries , Tren Maya, Itsmo where excellent much needed projects, however , I never agreed with canceling that other project, nor weakening the FAM thru a new subsidized airline. AMLO could just remodeled the FAM part of Santa Lucia, which btw kind of looks like an average US Air Force Base..
I love the concept behind tren maya, as well as some of the other railway projects he has funded, and I do agree, had he kept the original airport project moving, that couldve freed up funding to make some of his other projects a lot better than what they currently are. Same with this airline, I am happy for the return of Mexicana, but is the airline really something we currently need? I don't personally agree
First of I would like to say I'm a fan of your videos keep up the good work! My thoughts on this is that yes this airline was rushed I feel like they could've done a better job with the livery but at the same time they are barely starting out, I'd say give it some time to grow a little bit and see give it another chance. What do you think?
I'm going to give it around a year, and revisit them, as you said, most airlines that are starting up are missing their full experience.

The cost of socialism.
Yeah this airline, if it even lasts, is going to be used only by Mexican Citizens 🤨. What are they clapping for/saying “bravo” for? Because they landed safely? They’re not even at their destination airport 🙄
We could say that they clapped because it was the inaugural flight, which is something common in those situations.
Fantastic video but I can see why this whole thing is controversial lol

I'm mixed with it, I feel that NLU should be used for all local/interstate flights whereas the Benito Juarez Airport should be used for all international flights.
I still agree with President Obrador with axing the old airport design due to excessive costs & overspending, I just wish his administration would've considered how to connect both airports to each other.
New York-JFK has all international flights whereas New York-LaGuardia has only short haul flights given its location.
Seoul-Incheon has all international flights whereas Seoul-Gimpo has all local flights within South Korea
Tokyo Haneda used to have only local flights whereas Tokyo-Narita had all the international flights to Japan until recently foreign airlines were adding Haneda, my guess is Mexico wanted to replicate the same thing?
What controversy? Because the flight had to divert to Merida because of intense fog in Tulum? Wow eve wants to make a big fuss about something that is very common in this cases.
That’s is clearly not why it’s a controversial airline. It clearly has to do with a historic brand name being out into a brand new airline, even though the New Mexicans and old Mexicana are nowhere near close or similar to each other
I’ve been to this airport and it’s great, sure it’s not an engineering marvel but it’s clean and modern (maybe just because it’s new) but still, it’s a completely waste of money, it’s in the middle of nowhere, so far outside Mexico City that it’s never gonna be the main option to fly in and out of. (Unless as you said you live in Pachuca or some neighboring community) It’s sad cause it is a nice well built airport but it was definitely built for the wrong reasons, a selfish person with power just wanting to make a show. Now as a consequence instead of having a big modern massive hub for aviation, Mexico City has one nice airport no one will use and a literal sinking piece of crap of an airport no one likes to use but everyone’s forced to, Mexico City international might just be the worst big airport out there.
First off, Happy New Years🎉🎉 🥂 🥂 😊. Thank you Trip Report for this flight to hopefully start out a great service. Well, I am glad the Captain made a decision to place safety first in nt landing at Tulum without the ILS system there. Yes, you find out that other aircraft landed there but this Captain with the inaugural flight if the government back airline was being safe! All the that PR stuff with media and cameras!!😅😅😅 I am glad your flight just went somewhere close to Merida. Good!! And then you finding out about the maintenance problems about this particular aircraft, wow!!! This aircraft will have to be fixed back at a maintenance facility. Well, you finally landed in Tulum and congratulations!🎉🎉🎉. Safely first is always nice!! Merida has a cute small/medium size airport there!!😊 Anyway, there is politics, money and negotiations in every country.😊 What can we do!! Oh well!!😅😅. Again, I am glad you took this trip and was safely there and got back home safe as well!!😊❤ Thank you for sharing.😊
This airport is a laughing stock and everyone knows it. It's an ugly airport. It's basically a warehouse tyoe building with IKEA type furniture inside to breakup the spaces. It feels and looks cheap because it is.
And to make matters worse, it won't ever be able to replace Benito Juarez in CDMX. The aiport that was canceled would have replaced it.
Creating a government airline to service this airport because no other companies want to is a sign of desperation.
The new airport was cancelled when 40% completed? Doubtful!?
What poor countries do... so wrong!
Tu crees que podrán contra Aeroméxico? 😂
I say give them a few years to iron things out
I say that in a few years, the deficits will be so crippling that Sheinbaum will abandon this socialist fantasy.
It's...ayt.
eres tú Victor de la Academia? 😂😅😅
I think flying to Tulum for us Americans will be a lot easier than Cancun or Cozumel in order to get down to the Riviera Maya faster.
It won't be flying from any airport in the USA. It's a government airline flying domestic only flights. It's a farce to cover up the fact that no commercial airlines want anything to do with this airport.
@@mrxman581 false, it's already receiving american flights.
I am also a Mexican citizen and it seems like you don't know how our country works, long term government projects are often thrown out the window by new governments. And it becomes a vicious cycle of wasted government money or pocketed money by Mexican leaders.... hence why amlo's projects all seemed rushed. I don't like it either but it seems like the only way.
Yah I never thought of this airline as the original mexicana revival they made it out to be. It’s just one more of amlo’s pet projects that further make Mexican aviation less effective.
AIFA is such a heartbreak. It’s really sad to see how much the Mexican aviation is hurting because an old man’s tantrum. Against the airport that would have been the best thing to happen to the Mexican aviation industry (NAICM)
This guy really loved Peña Nieto. Please focus on just the review and not make it all political next time
Actually I’m not a fan of him either. I voted for Quadri
