Toledo is a city in Spain , 70 km south of Madrid . The city is the capital of the province of Toledo, and in 1986 the city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for its extensive and magnificent cultural history as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire. Toledo has been inhabited since the Bronze Age , and many historical events have taken place here. From Roman times the city was called Toletum. After the Visigoths were driven out of Gaul in 507, Toledo gradually (under rulers such as Teudis and Athanagild, between 527 and 567) became their new capital. It functioned as such until the Moors subjugated the entire Iberian Peninsula from 711.
In the Middle Ages, the city was known for its skillful knife and swordsmiths who used damascene steel in the blades. The method produced weapons and tools that could withstand a lot of use without breaking and retained their sharpness for a long time. Toledo blade can therefore be considered an early trademark that stood for quality.
In 2008, the city had a population of 80,810, and annually receives thousands of visiting tourists.
