I would give a link to the recently published book that reveals everything about the Tolkien mythology, but that seems to be unwelcome among youtube content producers. I like Pearce, but he is a conventional Tolkien 'scholar'. The conventional interpretation is going to fall very soon, and people will finally understand what Tolkien actually gave the world and how truly Catholic the mythology is.

thats all well and good yet Tolkin himself said he Wrote it as a mythic work to create a separate world that was independent of spiritual allegory . Reading Catholic or Christian themes weren't his intention yet his own norms and morality ands spirituality oozes out of the framework.

there is the idea of self sacrifice yet thats a common theme not necessarily Catholic ..On the other hand in CS Lewis Narnia there was a substitutionary depiction of Aslan ( jesus)for the sins of Edmond that sold out(Judas). not leaving us to guess who's who in Tolkian LOTR

    • @Dar-oi3tw

CS Lewis was also converted partially by JRR Tolkien as well. Lewis was originally an Atheist who enjoyed fantasy and met Tolkien at Oxford University in England where Tolkien explained that the reason why we are interested in fantasy is because it helps to explain the spiritual world to us. This type of explanation with fantasy and its connection to faith is one of the reasons why Lewis converted to Anglicanism and used that newfound inspiration to make the Chronicles of Narnia.

A fundamentally religious and Catholic work, lol. Catholics can admire what is good in other religions or stories, without adopting it's belief system as a whole. Where there is truth and goodness, there is God. But the fullness of truth is Christ himself who created those virtues present in humanity. Paganism doesn't own the concept of bravery. The natural law and virtues are already built into humans' DNA. I love reading stories from other cultures and so did Tolkien. Does it invalidate his Catholicism for admiring? Absolutely not. What makes his work so amazing is that believers and non believers love it. Universal human truths are in it.
