From my experience the most powerful tool a guy has is mystery. My worry always had been "if I screw up flirting with her, I'm going to get slapped for it, kicked, humiliated or worse", so there's always been a deep set fear behind it beyond just not knowing what to do. And this was before the "metoo" movement even started.
The reason for this is because my very first girlfriend was very abusive - I think she was being abused at home by her dad - and she kept threatening to tell people I was beating her if I didn't do what she wanted whether I liked it or not. That fear never really went away for me unfortunately. I still don't know what to do to resolve it. 😔
